Most Overrated Cuisine (1 Viewer)

There was a German joint downstairs where I lived in SF that closed down years ago. I only ate there twice, but it was ok after a bender. The smell wasn't very enticing when I opened the window though.

Sorry, Tim, but you crack me up. After bashing American food, you are now turning to Wiki to prove that your favorite Italian dish isn't, in fact, American. And after you say that your favorite Italian dish is "also" Caesar salad, you claim to have known all along that it's not an Italian dish when pointed out to you.

I've been to Mexico, Thailand, China, Japan, Italy and France. By and large, the American version of their cuisine isn't that far off the real deal so long as you aren't eating in a chain. I've eaten ####ty Chinese food in China and I've had ####ty Chinese food in the US.
I found Chinese food in America to barely resemble Chinese food in China
American Chinese food bears no resemblance at all to Chinese food in China... even going to Chinatown isn't the same.

For that matter... my wife and I went to San Francisco's Chinatown a couple of years ago... big Chinatown there. Went to what was supposed to be the best Hunan restaurant in SF. My wife is from Hunan province, and she cooks authentic Hunan and speaks the local dialect. She told me the restaurant staff not only didn't speak any Hunan dialect, but they all spoke Cantonese - (from Hong Kong or Guangzho). She also said their version of Hunan food was a rip... "they make it spicy and so they call it Hunan but it is not delicious like Hunan" were pretty close to her exact words.
nice. I didn't know you had a Chinese wife.
Hunan

German food is pretty disgusting.
I wouldn't go so far as to say it's disgusting, but I find it really bland. I like schnitzel, but spaetzle is blah.
Plus, it's not prevalent, so it can't be overrated. "hey honey, let's hit the German restaurant for dinner tonight"
If it was any good, you would be saying that
I agree, but my point is... there are no German restaurants.
Metzgers in Ann Arbor and Richters in Dearborn
The Berghoff in Chicago

That looks good.

But it's true. I knew about Caesar, didn't know about Picatta, then checked with Wiki to make sure.

I've seen two links. You cited wiki to support your claim. Then there's a link to a food history site that contradicts you. I suggest that you come up with four more independent sources to substantiate your claim.

I knew about Caesar,
So when you said your favorite Italian dish was also Caeser salad, you knew it wasn't Italian? Were you drunk?

Re Picatta, I wasn't making the claim. I thought it was Italian, surprised to learn it wasn't, so I looked it up. I really don't care if it comes from there or not. It's still my favorite ever main dish eaten in an Italian restaurant. My second favorite main dish ever was a steak, marinated in lemon and garlic. That probably didn't originate in Italy either, but it was one of the best steaks I've ever eaten. As for Caesar, yes I knew, because I had read about it before, but I didn't think about it when I made the post, since I was intent on listing the best food I had eaten in an Italian restaurant. Mea culpa.

I just learned that Tandoori chicken did not originate in India. That I did not know. I did know that tempura wasn't introduced to Japan until the Portugese arrived.

So why were you bashing American food again?

Mainly traditional- American cheese, hot dogs, processed foods, mayo. There's a lot of American food I love; just find it inferior to many other cuisines.

You really just cannot get anything right, can you? Since when is mayo American? It was invented in Spain and popularized in France. Hell, the Belgians and Dutch put it on their pommes frites.

Tex-Mex. Is it even ethnic food? It's garbage.

Guess I'd begrudgingly vote for German, even though I love it. Maybe English food, although I like a good Shepherd's pie.

Underrated: Lebanese/Turkish.

Think I'll have Italian for lunch: Caesar Salad
Think I'll have Italian for lunch: Caesar Salad
Best Caesar Salad I ever had was at the Brown Palace, Denver. Salad chef makes it table-side. I still dream of this salad.
Did you see Tim there?
No... Probably too expensive. But I'm damned close to going back just for that salad!!
Just FYI, that wasn't Caesar dressing on the salad. :brush:

i don't know how German food is considered overrated. i do not generally see it as highly regarded. imo, it is very underrated.

Whatever rating it has is higher than it's real ranking should be.

Knoedel? Pork knuckles? Are you kidding me?

i just don't think it is rated highly to begin with. jagerschnitzel, spaetzle, sauerbrauten, brats, bocks, knocks, suppen, and salads are all very good.

I also second this...not may people are fans of German food so it cannot be overrated. Plus it actually tastes pretty good.
