Most overrated NFL player in history... (1 Viewer)

Talk about a guy living off the hype of a few plays in college.

He is continually torched by mediocre WR's. His career high in INT's is 5 in his rookie year. In 5 of his 8 seasons, he totaled 1 INT. The guy is an overpaid scrub. Clearly my #1 as most overrated player in NFL history.

he was never rated... he was a complete bust.Woodson continues to be paid and get torched night in and night out.
 
Can he blame injuries? He had some decent years in Oakland, no?

Leaf isn't an overrated NFL player - because 99.9% of people who follow the game think he was terrible. It is like saying that Paris Hilton is an overrated actress.

Leaf isn't an overrated NFL player - because 99.9% of people who follow the game think he was terrible. It is like saying that Paris Hilton is an overrated actress.

Ryan Leaf certainly was overrated. At the combine. And on draft day.

As bad as Woodson's been, Phillip Buchanon has been even worse... and Houston still actually TRADED A DRAFT PICK to get him. I'd say it's pretty close between both former Oakland CBs, as far as current players go.As for the most overrated player in NFL history, it's Eddie George, and it's not even close. Only TWICE in his 10-year career did he even break 4.0 yards per carry (a lofty 4.1 both seasons). The only thing he was EVER good at was taking a hit... and yet he made 4 pro bowls and some people even mention him as a potential Hall of Famer!
 
There should be a disclaimer that reads:

Many players are overrated. But they are only overrated for a period of time before everyone realizes they aren't as good as advertised.

Ryan Leaf was overrated for only about 3 months.

Brett Favre has been overrated for the past 3 Years.

Charles Woodson is no longer thought of as one of the very best DBs in the NFL (if you read a decent scouting mag)... but he was certainly overrated for the first few years of his career.

The tough thing would be to be overrated for a very long period of time. Could be Michael Vick, although I'm still in the camp that he could pull things together with a decent WR corps.

So who was overrated for the longest period of time should define who is the MOST overrated.

I vote... Lynn Swann. :scared:

Not disagreeing with you, just pointing out some facts:In 3 of those 5 seasons with only 1 INT Woodson didn't play the entire season because of injury.INT's are also not a very good indicator of a good DB, imo. Were they throwing away from him?Lastly, getting torched a couple of times in a preseason game does not constitute using the word continually when talking about a person's 8 year career.

I agree Woodson has not lived up to his hype by any means, but in all fairness he made way more than just a few plays in college.
 
Earlier in his career, I'd have said Keyshawn Johnson. Back then this guy yapped and yapped on about himself and his skills and was earmarked to be the next great thing. Didn't really happen, but to his credit he's turned in a solid career.

 
Early in his career, Keyshawn was amazing. Diving catches, snagging loose balls, trick plays... He was really amazing, but declined very fast.

Those 5 seasons he totalled 1 Int was because he was so good that no QB would dare throw it in his direction. He was a shutdown corner that took away half the field and almost brought the Raiders a Super Bowl in 2002. Guy is a bonafide stud going back to his days playing in "The Big House" and winning the Heisman. Really surprised to see you say he is overrated after Palmer/TJ Housh took a blowtorch to him on MNF...it was just 1 game, right?

LT is a far more talented player

before i get reamed for this just show me anything that makes those 2 look special

Show me any game where LT hasn't looked special and then we'll talk. Your argument may apply to LJ (3 potential HOF OL), but not LT)

:goodposting: Favre lead the league in TD passes with 32 three years ago, and two years ago he threw for 4000+ yards and 30 TDs.If he was so good he would have thrown for 5000 yards and 40+ TDs. Let's just hate and not look up the facts. :thumbup:

Reread his post. It doesn't look to me like billymays thinks LT overrated.

In 2004 the Falcons lead the league in rushing 1st downs, rushing yards/game, rushes of 20+ yards and other categories that Vick was a part of. How many offensive categories did the Bears lead in last year?

Pretty damn good for a RB. Too bad he plays QB. What happened the next year when they still led the league in rushing but their Defense wasnt a top D? Oh yeah, Atl got crushed.Vick is overrated. People point to his wins to say how much he means to the team. He is a top RB but as a QB they need a top D and run game to win. If we are talking overrated DBs add Q Jammer. #5 pick, most penalized CB in the league and just got a 5 year extension for big $$

:goodposting: I'm both an Oakland and Michigan fan and I will say that he WAS the best football player in college that year. I will also say that he did deserve pro-bowl invites a couple of those years. But as much as I loved him in college and his first few years w/ Oakland, I've loathed him just as much the last few. Injuries have eroded his cover skills a ton. He has not been worth nearly as much as they've paid him the last 4 years, even if healthy. The reason he is so easy to pick on now is that he has such an ego - demanding to be among the top-paid corners in the league. He was also leading the mutiny that chased off Callahan (not that I was real dissappointed w/ that). Paired w/ Buchannon, that tandem was the most overhyped, overpaid, ego-maniacal pair that could give anybody a 10 yard cushion or a TD.
 
I think you gotta consider Bo Jackson. I really liked the guy, but he was only a backup RB. A backup for Marcus Allen.

Remember the Bo hype? He was even featured on a Saturday morning cartoon called Pro Stars featuring Michael Jordan and Wayne Gretzky along side Bo.

Maybe if Bo played in the Tecmo Bowl version of the NFL, he'd have been that huge, but this is reality.

 
Here's an interesting tidbit from Aaron Schatz of Football Outsiders re: Woodson...

"...In his limited time last year, our game charters listed Woodson as allowing 10.5 yards per pass in coverage. That was very bad, almost Duane Starks level bad, but we sort of wrote it off as small sample size. Maybe it wasn't."

 
What about Kurt Warner??? When Green went down, he was thrown in w/a whole $h**load of talent everywhere around him!!!!!!!!

 
I think you got the right team, but wrong player. I think Warren Sapp is the most overrated player of all time (at least in my era). Guy was surrounded by studs in Tampa and just happened to be the loudest guy on the team so he gets noticed. Now, I'm not saying he's bad, but his stats are not off the page (doesn't get many tackles or sacks). While he is impressive for a fat guy, I don't think he's nearly worth the pay nor the number of jersey sales the guy gets.
