UMHB's Season Ends at Mount Union

ALLIANCE, OH (December 8, 2012) -- The Mary Hardin-Baylor football team's season came to an end with a 48-35 loss to Mount Union in the NCAA division three national semifinals Saturday.

The Cru took a 28-14 lead over No. 1 Mount Union at halftime, but the Raiders scored twice in less than a minute to begin the fourth quarter to tie the game at 28.

The 28-14 deficit was the first time Mount Union trailed at halftime, outside of the Stagg Bowl, since 2005.

The Cru forced five turnovers on the day and forced a fumble midway through the fourth quarter that led to a go-ahead touchdown that made it 35-28 with six minutes to play.

After the Raiders tied it with 3:42 to play, UMHB was forced to punt after a three-and-out. Mount Union then marched downfield and scored with five seconds to play to take a 42-35 lead.

On the final play of the game, UMHB turned it over on a lateral attempt and it was returned for a touchdown as time expired.

This will be Mount Union's eighth straight appearance in the Stagg Bowl.

UMHB ends the season 13-1.

I'll be really curious to see Jasper Collins at the combine. At first glance he looks like he's got a legit chance to be the 3rd NFL WR to come out of Mount Union in the last six years (Garcon, Shorts).

Finished with over 200 yards today, I think. Oddly, if he pans out, Mount Union could be the college with the best trio of WRs in the NFL. Who says there isn't talent at D3?They'll play St. Thomas. I really didn't think the Tommies had the team this year to get to the Stagg. When I watched them beat SJU, I didn't think they'd even win the conference. Boy, they proved me wrong.Have to think they're going to fall to Mount Union pretty hard. Have to give Glenn Caruso props, though. He's got that program humming. I'd be surprised if they don't win a title in the next three years with how young they are and the caliber of player they are recruiting. And Caruso works his tail off preparing his team. I don't think this year is the year, but with the dropoff from Whitewater, I think the West Region could go through St. Paul for the next couple of years.

SALEM, Va. (AP) - Mount Union is back on top of Division III football, and failure was the inspiration.

Kevin Burke led two second-half touchdown drives and the Purple Raiders ended a three-year losing streak in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl with a 28-10 victory over St. Thomas of Minnesota on Friday night.

Those three straight losses, coach Larry Kehres said, gave him a sense of urgency to win again, and keep his seniors from being his first class in 20 years to leave without a title.

"It was a difficult three years to see the seniors experience loss in the final game," Kehres said. "I felt for them. This group inspired me to do everything I could coaching to make sure we got every chance to win the championship this year."

The victory gave Kehres his 11th national title in 16 appearances in the Stagg Bowl, all in the past 20 years. He's staggering 332-24-3 in 27 seasons, and those seniors did a lot of the heavy lifting.

Linerbacker Charles Dieuseul blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown as the Purple Raiders (15-0) took an early 14-0 lead, and wide receiver Chris Denton rebounded form fumbling a punt away with a 17-yard TD catch on a fourth down play.

"It's the best feeling in the world," Dieuseul gushed after also having six tackles and a sack. "We worked all summer to get to this point right here. All the hard work - 6 a.m. lifting, practicing in the snow - and it paid off tonight."

Burke, the game's most outstanding player, threw the scoring pass to Denton on fourth down late in the third quarter to give the Purple Raiders a 21-10 lead, then directed a 14-play, 87-yard drive for the clinching score with 4:28 to play.

"I think it was these guys kind of buckling down," Burke said. "You looked at where you are and kind of realized that this is it. This is our last second quarter, third quarter, fourth quarter. That hits you hard and you've got to step up at that point."

The sophomore quarterback stepped up, too, completing three third-down passes to keep the final drive alive. Burke finished 21 for 28 passing for 222 yards with the touchdown, and avoided the turnovers that often alter title games.

The Tommies (14-1), making their first appearance in the championship game and playing in the Eastern time zone for the first time since 1949, managed only 35 yards of offense in the second half against Mount Union's top-rated defense, and couldn't stop the Purple Raiders' top-ranked offense after Paul Graupner's 38-yard field goal made it a 14-10 game.

"I do think for sure one of the pivotal points of the game was when we did get within those four points and then they came back and they answered and I think that's the mark of a championship team," fifth-year coach Glenn Caruso said.

The Tommies seemed poised to make it a game down to the wire until Burke and Co. took command.

"We're crushed," wide receiver Dan Ferrazzo said, "and like coach said, we're going to own this pain and we're going to get better from it."

Mount Union's offense, stymied for several series, came alive after Graupner's field goal midway through the third quarter. The scoring play was set up by the game's first turnover, a fumble by Denton recovered by Zach Novaczyk at the 27.

The Purple Raiders took over at their 19 and went 81 yards in 12 plays. Burke hit Julius Moore for 12 yards on a third-and-four and Jasper Collins for eight yards on a third-and-12 from the St. Thomas 25.

Kehres opted to go for it on fourth-and-four, and Burke hit Denton in the left corner for the TD.

A leaping, fingertip interception by Isaiah Scott at the Purple Raiders' 13 ended the Tommies' attempt to answer, and Burke completed three passes on third down to keep the ensuing nearly 9-minute drive alive.

The third one, on third-and-6 from the St. Thomas 43, went to Jasper Collins, who juked Sean Hamlin after the short catch, turning it into a 38-yard gain. Two plays later, Jake Simon's second 1-yard TD run made it 28-10.

The Tommies struggled early, but used a trick play to get untracked, and on the scoreboard.

Facing fourth-and-10 from the Purple Raiders' 10, they lined up for a 27-yard field goal. The snap came to Ferrazzo, the holder, who bolted for the right pilon, diving for the touchdown to make it 14-7 just 1:29 into the second quarter.

The Tommies should have tied it later in the quarter when Matt O'Connell hit Matt Misiewicz in the hands a few steps from the end zone, but the ball glanced off the big tight end's hands and the drive stalled.

O'Connell finished 15 for 35 for 116 yards. He was sacked five times and under pressure all game.

The Purple Raiders looked intent on reclaiming their perch atop Division III football from the start. From its own 18, Mount Union needed just seven plays, the biggest a 41-yard pass from Burke to Collins, to go ahead 7-0. They actually scored twice, too, because the officials said they needed to review Burke's 10-yard pass to Denton to the 1, but didn't decide to do it until after Simon scored on a 1-yard run. After a lengthy review, Simon ran it in again on the do-over.

Mount Union made it 14-0 after an exchange of punts. The Purple Raiders held again, and when Tommies' 6-foot-6 punter Garrett Maloney had to jump to catch a high snap, he was swarmed as he tried to punt.

"I was going to score regardless, even if I had to drag 20 people," Dieuseul said.

It was Mount Union's fourth punt block, and third return for a TD, in the past three games.

Andre Johnson, Reggie Wayne, Santana moss.
I was trying to think of a third guy for UM but I forgot about Moss and was stuck with Hester or Hankerson.
I'm an SJU season ticket holder, so take this with a grain of salt:St. Thomas embarrassed themselves at the end of the game. They punted on fourth down with a minute left, down by 18. Kehres assumed they were conceding, and decided to go into a victory formation. They down the ball, and two St. Thomas linemen go really low. Down by 18, with a minute left, mind you. Then St. Thomas calls timeout. Kehres again goes into victory formation and St. Thomas again goes low. Another timeout is called. It was pathetic. I have no problem with people trying hard until the end if it's a one-score game. But a three score game with a minute left? Let them take a knee, shake their hand and congratulate them on a win. They earned it. But this is the same team that took 5 or 6 personal foul penalties against St. John's this year, so I guess I should have expected it.There was a portion of that game where St. Thomas outplayed Mount. Unfortunately, they did the two things you can't do against Mount: Let them out to an early lead. Then let them score a special teams TD.And, as much as I dislike Caruso, he's a great Xs and Os guy. But he got completely outclassed by Kehres in the second half. That last scoring drive (and the fourth down TD) were things of beauty. And, for as much as the St. Thomas offensive line was dominating in the second quarter, after halftime it was all Mount D. Great halftime adjustments by Mount. I've watched a lot of St. Thomas games the last two years, and I don't ever recall a team getting that kind of pressure against them. And Mount did a great job taking away UST's best offensive weapon - Logan Marks. As an aside, I'm disappointed in the finalists for the SJU job. Two guys with no collegiate head coaching experience, and another guy with a 22-38 record. Not that I'm surprised - SJU is known for it's nepotism and these are all former SJU assistants - but it's a little disappointing. They needed to get someone from outside the program (like Gagliardi was) to reinvigorate it.

Whitewater had a down year last year but they are pretty damn good again. But they aren't destroying people like Mt Union has this year. Holy ####.

WW v Franklin in the 2nd round is a tough draw IMO.

Mount Union losing late. Not looking good for them.

Mary Hardin Baylor and WWW starting soon.

It has been snowing hard all game.

North Central special teams have been special.

Mount Union drives the field for a touchdown, and gets a two point conversion to go ahead by 1 point with 5 minutes left.

North Central gets another nice kickoff return, drives for a touchdown, misses 2 point conversion with 1:38 left.

North Central kickoff goes out of bounds giving Mount Union the ball at their 35. They drive quickly for a touchdown with 1:07 now left on the clock. Two point conversion no good. Mount Union 41 North Central 40 and is far from over.

North Central starts with the ball at their 41 and gets to the MU 30 quick. 4 straight incomplete passes later, Mount Union gets the ball with 10 seconds left, kneels and the game is over.

41-40 Mount Union and off to the Title Game for the 9th straight year with their 29 game winning streak

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MHB has an 3-0 first quarter lead over UWW

Halftime - Mary Hardin-Baylor 12, UW Whitewater 7

At the end of 3 UWW is ahead 16-12

3:29 to go and it is a 1 point game, 16-15

Whitewater vs. Mount Union could happen for the 8th time in 9 years.
Isn't there something out of whack with this? There's hundreds of DIII schools playing football and these two kill everybody else year after year? What gives?
Why must there be something wrong?
This shouldn't be possible in a competitive environment with the number of schools fielding teams.
Sometimes, that's just how things play out. Women's soccer is probably pretty competitive, but for a few decades, NC has dominated it. From 82 until 00, they made 18 out 19 national championship games winning 16 of them.

Wasn't the Stagg Bowl usually on Saturday? Kickoff is tonight at 6pm Central.

Someone on FB posted that UWW is -7...that can't be right, can it?

I'm one as well going way back I can't think of any others. A lot of people have gone to parties there, or for a year or two...

Not many Whitewater alums here but a game like this has to make you smile!
Offdee is one I think. I'm a johnnie alum but rarely follow. Did watch them beat st Thomas this year.
Pretty sure Offdee QBd for them back in the mid 90s. I have numerous friends who went there and I may have had a beer to two in WW back in the day. Fun party town for being a tiny college in BFE, Wisconsin.

I thought this would be a 45-42 shootout but UWWs defense really played well.

My wife is a graduate and I had friends from high school attend Whitewater, made several road trips there and attended parties there (unfortunately I do not remember them too well).

Great to see them win. I heard Whitewater's coach interviewed on Milwaukee radio Thursday morning, he stated their starting offensive line has one junior, two Sophs, and two freshman. He stated at the beginning of the season the Stagg Bowl was expected to come next year not this year.

Mid 90s you say?

UW Whitewater going for the first ever 3 major sport championship sweep. Would clinch a baseball championship today with a win, can still play tomorrow if they lose. Football and basketball championships already in hand for this year.

Looks like it is a done deal, Whitewater up 7-0 in the 9th inning. I always cheer them on since my wife is a graduate and growing up I played hockey with the baseball coach.

Actually besides the tri-fecta, I believe Whitewater in this school year has won football, basketball, baseball, gymnastics, wheelchair basketball men's and women's. Probably tough to just find schools that have won the big 3.

When I was at UWW in the middle 90's, I was on the bowling team and we won ACUI nationals in Omaha, Neb. At that time we were only the 2nd team from Wisconsin to win a national bowling tourny, div 3 school against div 1-3 schools.

I went to Bethel. We were good a couple years. Then Johnnies beat us at St Johns. When we were nationally ranked. And that was the game that gave the coach the record for most wins. And it was on Sports Center.

3rd round:

#1 UW Whitewater 37

#5 Wartburg 33

#4 Wesley 41

#9 Hobart 13

#3 Mount Union 38

#6 John Carroll 28

#10 Linfield 45

#11 Widener 7

December 13, 2014 Semifinals:

UW Whitewater vs. Linfield

Mount Union vs. Wesley

Linfield beat #2 Mary Hardin Baylor in round 2
