Mountain Biking Guys (1 Viewer)

I've posted a few times in the 10k thread. I've been mountain biking for a few years. The big race I do every year is http://www.iceman.com/ I stick to the many trails we have here in SE Michigan. We don't have the same elevation as Utah or Colorado, but we do have a ton of trails in the area.

Keeping up with the biking. It is a nice change of pace from the running. Have done a few rides with OK climbs on 1000 feet. Did 30 miles on a path Friday after work. Just had tired legs for my 8 mile run Saturday morning.

I'm still recovering my mountain biking adventures in Moab, UT over Memorial Day weekend. I was riding some really steep, pure slickrock terrain, and, at one point, I flipped over my handlebars going down a steep descent and landed on my wrist. It has been hurting pretty bad for over two weeks now, so I'm thinking I may have a slight fracture in one of the carpal bones in my hand. I finally broke down and bought a wrist splint yesterday. Nevertheless, the mountain biking out there in Moab was awesome with incredible views of the red rock formations.

Soooo....I bent a cog and put a crack in my chain two weeks ago...which may or may not have led to the chainrings getting pretty worn. I've only been into this sport for 2 summers now and decided to use it as an opportunity to learn more about my bike and how to fix/maintain it myself. it's been a pretty eye opening experience as to how much there really is to a decent mountain bike and what each individual component costs on even a mid level machine like mine. Pretty easy to see how people can spend 6 grand on a bike. I already took pretty decent care of it, but man, I will be doing a little extra from now on to make sure this stuff lasts!

Side note: It's been sitting on the rack ready to ride all week, but the 110+ heat indexes up here are keeping me from riding...finally today is the day I get to test out the handiwork.

Gradually doing more, but I have to say I am a pansy when it comes to the technical aspect to this point. I am getting better, but still tentative.

As far as the aerobic goes, I have no problem. I am powering up hills faster and easier than guys that have been riding for a while. Just gotta get the technical stuff down.

What's your favorites? I like Island Lake by Brighton and if I want something a bit more technical the Potowatami is pretty close by.

Right there with ya...at 35 my body just doesn't heal like it did when I was in my 20s and more active than I am now...a jammed toe will put me down for 2 weeks...I'd hate to know how long I'd be out if I were to break something or impale myself . On my new bike I'm 10x more comfortable doing technical stuff than I was on my starter bike..but I still wuss out much more than I like to admit when it comes to something I could fall off or end up going over my handlebars...like the 4 foot log pile I feel off last summer, landing perpendicular on another log on my side/ribs. My rib is throbbing just thinking about it...not a good thing to be sitting here thinking about 3 hours before hitting a trail. :topcat:

Terrible at using the search function I guess??

I remember reading in a bike thread awhile back, there was a link to a sweet website that sells bikes cheaper then I can score in the stores.

For the life of me I can't find it or come up with it on my own?

Wife & I are going to get our first mountain bikes this summer and don't know where to start.

Help is appreciated!!!

I was given some really nice Crank Bros pedals for clipping, grabbed some nice Pearl Izumi MTB shoes, and went to St George about a week and a half ago for some riding with a friend. Took about an hour for me to fall in some deep sand after I couldn't unclip and crack a rib on my left side. :bag: Still hurts like a mother. I really hope I can get at least a little better at this. Love riding my MTB to and from work, rode home 14 miles last Friday and it was a beautiful early Spring afternoon.
