It has probably been done before.  I wanted to get this going during the heart of March Madness, but got busy.   We are focusing on movie directors still alive and active today.

What I intend this to be (took the idea from a podcast) is to vote on who's new movie would you want to see today.  Obviously past movies factor into this, but it should be just as much about what they are doing now and what you think their output will be in the future.  Essentially the only information you have about the movie before watching it is "New Movie by ____________".

I loved the individual director threads I was doing and the discussion with each, but I thought this would be a fun way to talk about a lot of directors quickly.  Vote/discuss/debate/argue away!!  Votes will be public, and I included the seeding in the poll options.

I can only do 4 questions each thread, so the intent is to do a couple threads (one corner of the overall bracket) every day or so.  I will give it a few days for voting and then do the next round.

The Burton-Apatow matchup is the interesting one in this thread, imo.  They both share one commonality-they are stuck in a cliched rut of their own style.  I voted Burton because he at least tries to be interesting, weird, off kilter, unique.  Apatow has a few good films be in reality you can fuse all his movies together and make A Tree of Life parody with them.

Wow

lots of ####ty directors here
You'll have that when trying to come up with 64 of these people.

I still love Cronenberg's output.  I will watch anything that he does.  Have also been a fan of Innaritu for years.  I think those two are two of the best directors out there.  My love for Tarantino officially ended after Hateful Eight, but still got the nod from me here.  That 7-10 is rough.  Neither I really like now, but sadly had to vote for Apatow.  Burton has been stuck in that rut of just taking some kids story or old TV show nobody remembers and making it creepy and weird for far too long.  I wouldn't risk sitting through one of those if I had this choice.

So true.

I can't stand apatow. Not my style of humor. Love Burton. Seems like he's going down.

Also, Smith is basically a hack these days but I'll always have a soft spot for him. One of the first R rated movies I ever saw was Clerks when I was 13. So I enjoy most of his catalogue.

I like both Apatow and Burton. I thought that was a tough match-up because they both have really clear visions about what they want to do and execute it well.

:shrugs:

There is no way Inarritu and Smith belong in the same sentence. 21 Grams and Birdman were awesome.

Hey, if you voted for Kevin Smith, please PM me your address.  That way, when I come over to break your PS3, and pull your underwear over your head, I won't get lost.

That matchup has no business being that close. Should look more like the 1-16, and I actually enjoy a few Smith movies.

Tough match for Singer.  He can beat others, but not QT
you're probably right.  I voted Singer because if told "New Movie by Bryan Singer".  I'll assume it's an X-men and my sons will want to see it in the theater.

Or it could be the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea remake he is working on. :excited:

My love for Tarantino officially ended after Hateful Eight...
I liked Hateful Eight, but maybe b/c I approached it as a vanity project for Tarantino, which lowers the expectations a bit.  Leigh and Goggins were outstanding.  Plus, after all these years, we got another western soundtrack from Morricone?
