It has probably been done before.  I wanted to get this going during the heart of March Madness, but got busy.   We are focusing on movie directors still alive and active today.

What I intend this to be (took the idea from a podcast) is to vote on who's new movie would you want to see today.  Obviously past movies factor into this, but it should be just as much about what they are doing now and what you think their output will be in the future.  Essentially the only information you have about the movie before watching it is "New Movie by ____________".

I loved the individual director threads I was doing and the discussion with each, but I thought this would be a fun way to talk about a lot of directors quickly.  Vote/discuss/debate/argue away!!  Votes will be public, and I included the seeding in the poll options.

I can only do 4 questions each thread, so the intent is to do a couple threads (one corner of the overall bracket) every day or so.  I will give it a few days for voting and then do the next round.

Lars von Trier is boring and I've maybe seen half of a half.

I wrote a song. It goes:

I don't care about/ Lars von Trier and doubt/

la la la la/ la la la Lars/look at all of them funeral cars

Danny Boyle and Cameron Crowe is the worst match-up so far, IMHO. Two guys I'd line right up to see a movie directed by.

I am opposite - not a huge fan of either.  I think in the end Crowe is way too sappy for me, and Boyle will get the vote.  Still thinking about it though.

I like Boyle's body of work more, but Almost Famous is my favorite flick by either of them.

Would add girl with the Dragon Tattoo to Fincher's tagline...mostly because it's one of my 20 favorite movies of all time.

Not sure how you don't think Boyle is brilliant.  Guy can do anything.
I agree that he can do anything.  it's just something with his hyperkinetic style that doesn't sit with me.  Haven't seen all his movies - still need to catch up on Shallow Grave and Steve Jobs.  I appreciate, but like Trainspotting a lot less than most.  I think Sunshine was 2/3 of a great movie, and I love 28 Days Later.  Trance I disliked as well as The Beach. The others I saw were OK to good movies.

A lot of votes here too.  As predicted, 3 blowouts.  Let's see if anything more happens with that first one.  I will give it until tonight before calling it.  I think I will get #5 up today when my daughter takes her nap.

Fincher is no slam dunk as I am in the minority that hated Fight Club and the last 20 minutes of Gone Girl.

KP, please tell me you included Hayao Miyazaki in your tournament.  I know he said he's retired but I hold out hope he will return and if he does he certainly can stand toe to toe with most of the competition.  The man is a genius and his works are as compelling, thoughtful, bold, well directed and beautiful to look at as any one else's.  Would be a glaring omission if he's not in this thing.

Cool ideas. I did a Battle of the Bands here about 7 years ago and it was pretty fun. I am excited about this. Oddly a lot of the "favorite" directors I wanted to vote against were paired with lower seeds I liked even less.  I was surprised heavy chalk I went.

I did give more creedance to past work that potential future work though.
