It has probably been done before.  I wanted to get this going during the heart of March Madness, but got busy.   We are focusing on movie directors still alive and active today.

What I intend this to be (took the idea from a podcast) is to vote on who's new movie would you want to see today.  Obviously past movies factor into this, but it should be just as much about what they are doing now and what you think their output will be in the future.  Essentially the only information you have about the movie before watching it is "New Movie by ____________".

I loved the individual director threads I was doing and the discussion with each, but I thought this would be a fun way to talk about a lot of directors quickly.  Vote/discuss/debate/argue away!!  Votes will be public, and I included the seeding in the poll options.

I can only do 4 questions each thread, so the intent is to do a couple threads (one corner of the overall bracket) every day or so.  I will give it a few days for voting and then do the next round.

In the 2/15 match-up I chose Anderson but there is a caveat: if Miller comes out with another Mad Max movie I'm all in on that one.

Love me some Brad Bird, and hate Terrence Malick.

Win, win!

Bird is my Cinderella pick, he will surprise and make the sweet 16.

I am the opposite.  When I started, I didn't there would be anything that could get me to vote for Wes, but the threat of having to watch a Happy Feet or Mad Max movie did it.

Malick as a 3?  He'll be bounced shortly.  Wes Anderson as a 2 seed? Barf.  This is an example of a guy who is ONLY style.  He could use a little more Affleck in him.   No one in this bracket will sniff the finals.
This is not just my rankings - you look at damn near any list of best directors out there and those two names will show up.  I love Malick, but can't do Anderson's movies, so this is not me trying to provoke anything.  I tried to be rational about it.

The Road Warrior is better than any movie by any of the other directors in this poll.

You tell yourself whatever helps you sleep at night.

I like Anderson's older stuff, but I really have no need to see another one of his movies

the train one was awful.  Boy Scout one was good but that was the last one I saw

Yep, just as I thought - Malick getting trounced.  That was one of the guys I was worried about getting the boot early.  I get it, but still one of the more interesting directors out there to me.  The one that bothers me more is the 4-13 match in the other bracket.

Good assortment of directors so far.

Would like to see Peter Weir (Gallipoli, Dead Poets Society, Witness, Year of Living Dangerously, Truman Show, etc) in the running.

Had a long list, and a few hard cuts.  Weir was one, but has only made one movie in 10 years, and that was part of my decision there.  If it was just my rankings and opinion, I would have found room for N. Winding Refn, Duncan Jones, Matthew Vaughn, Bennett Miller, and Derek Cianfrance.  Definitely would look for one of their movies over a lot of the one that I included in the tournament.

He was on the list, but didn't make the cut.  Just one movie in 10 years was part of the decision.

There were a lot of directors I really like that I had to leave behind as well: Jean-Marc Vallée, Duncan Jones, N.Winding Refn, Tom Hooper, Matt Reeves, Matthew Vaughn, Bennett Miller, Todd Haynes, Richard Kelly, Gore Verbinski, Luc Besson, Derek Cianfrance, Jason Reitman, Jane Campion, and on and on.   The 5 highlighted were really a struggle for me to not include and if it was just my personal list they would have been on there over some other ones I did include.  Maybe I'll need to fire up an NIT bracket for the cast offs..

Russell ahead of Stone?

Platoon and Wall Street are time capsules that are essential viewing.

i like Malick. 3rd favorite in this bracket. it's just that Bird is 2nd favorite. Bird is terribly under-seeded.

You might be right.  I didn't know what to do with some of these guys.  Bird could have just as easily been written off as a guy that has just done a few kids movies and an action movie sequel.

To be fair, I am not sure who could have been up against Malick and had Malick win in the FFA.  Michael Bay, M.Night, Zack Snyder?

Woody Allen...

like to make a suggestion that you create a master thread that keeps getting updated with links to new matchups as well as showing the results.

I guess going with the more current makes sense as you don't have Kubrick, Capra, or Hitchcock type directors in the poll.
