First round of the tourney is over.  There quite a few upsets (except for in the NE Region).  Three of the 13 seeds went on to win, and a total of 8 double digits seeds pulled off the "upset".

Let's revisit what my intent with this tournament was:

We are voting on which one of the these director's movie you would want to see TODAY.  Of course past performance is part of the equation, but we should also be factoring in recent performance and what you think they will be doing in the future.  For the sake of the tournament, the ONLY information you have to decide between the two directors is something that reads "New Movie by _______".  There are no trailers, synopsis, or imdb page to look at.  I don't want it to be about theater experience either - what type of movies you usually pay for in the theater, etc..  I posted in one of the other threads this scenario: we all have the same home set up, so for the match pretend you get 2 blurays shipped to you in a blank case that reads "New movie by ______".  You have to pick one, and the other is destroyed MI style.

This was the odd region that didn't have any upsets (a 9 winning isn't really an upset).  As I look at the list, it just didn't have those polarizing directors that make movies that are more on the "artsy" side that people seem to revolt against.  I get the hate for guys like Malick.  Personally, I was surprised that Linklater went down so quickly.  The one that I am most disappointed that didn't make the cut was Spike Jonze.

This road the the Sweet 16 has a lot of easy picks for me.  One of the only tough ones is honestly that 1-9 here.  Not the biggest fan of Howard, but I really don't like the Coen's comedies so I have a 50% chance of really disliking the movie.  Tough choice there.

Oof.  Ang Lee getting destroyed so far.  I don't get it.  He is still putting out fantastic movies, Scott's last few have been average at best.

Coen bros are final four favorites, imo.    Yes, I think about 1/2 their films are weak efforts, with intolerable cruelty being an obvious example.

Ang Lee goes out of his way to make things boring.  But yeah, other than The Martian, RD hasn't done much worthwhile in a decade.

Plus, Tony Scott makes better flicks than Ridley...he'd be crushing Ang Lee too.

I look at Prometheus as a better made, better acted, better looking, better directed, less silly Matrix 2/3.  Scott had good intentions but he just wasn't tight in his story telling and that ultimately was the let down for me.  I still watch it when I stumble over it while channel surfing at 1:00am but it still fell short of expectations and that is because, imo, Scott is too talented to have let this opportunity fall short.  I am looking forward to the next installment, however, as I am hopeful Scott can get the franchise back on track.

Found this and while not 100% optimistic I still have hope: http://www.digitalspy.com/movies/alien-prometheus/feature/a670539/alien-covenant-everything-you-need-to-know-about-prometheus-2-including-release-date-cast-and-spoilers/

btw, the Matrix comparison is precisely the difference in talent level of directors.  The Wachowski's are in my "Who's movie are you least excited to watch" tournament and they are the heavy favorites.

I bet them vs. M Night would be a nail biter.

If you pick any director's worse movie, odds are it isn't a good one,

Their dramas are certainly better but there's almost always something I like in their comedies and they are quirky enough to keep my interest even when they are not "LOL" funny.

Is "O Brother" considered a comedy?

I am honestly surprised JJ is getting as many votes as he is here.  Thought Fincher would walk away with this one easily.

Oh, for sure.  Especially when directors have been at it as long as some of the guys in the tournament have been.  Going to have some clunkers.  Obviously it is all subjective, but guys like Fincher and Nolan don't have nearly the lows as some of the other top seeds.  When Insomnia or Dark Knight Rises are your worst movies.  I don't fault Fincher much for Alien 3 either.  I would rather watch those on a loop than subject myself to Indiana Jone 4 or Burn After Reading again.

Intolerable Cruelty was awesome but it was a vehicle to dress Catherine Zeta-Jones is as many outfits as they could. They admitted as such. And it was great for that reason, which is why you're winking. There's not much to think about other than the inevitable pull of men and women coming together.

You…fascinate me.
