We are voting on which one of the these director's movie you would want to see TODAY.  Of course past performance is part of the equation, but we should also be factoring in recent performance and what you think they will be doing in the future.  For the sake of the tournament, the ONLY information you have to decide between the two directors is something that reads "New Movie by _______".  There are no trailers, synopsis, or imdb page to look at.  I don't want it to be about theater experience either - what type of movies you usually pay for in the theater, etc..  I posted in one of the other threads this scenario: we all have the same home set up, so for the match pretend you get 2 blurays shipped to you in a blank case that reads "New movie by ______".  You have to pick one, and the other is destroyed MI style.

Looks like Affleck is the one real surprise in this thing.  Otherwise it looks like what you would expect any list naming the best directors working today to look like at the top.

I have been wrong a lot this tourney, but I think 2 of these will be close, 2 will be blowouts.  I think Affleck and Wes get demolished and their runs come to an end, and the others are close.  IMO the winner of the Fincher/Coen Brothers fight will be winner overall, but again - how many times have I been wrong during this thing?

Lotta coin flipping going on.  These are some interesting choices and frankly you can't go wrong with any of them.

I voted for the Coens in that match-up but with their more recent output not being up to their usual level it was close.  Regions 2 and 3 are definitely where the strength in this competition is, imo.  I'd be more interested in checking out anything by those four over anything by the four in regions 1 and 4.  All eight are good quality choices but if had to rank one to eight it would be in those two bundles.

I would tend to agree with your statement about the middle 4 vs the top and bottom. I fell I have seen all they have to offer from 1 and 4.  The middle pack probably has the best shot at giving me something new.

Affleck remains the only one of the directors who I would not consider when choosing whether or not to see his movie. His movies so far are just fine, but him being the director of something doesn't motivate me at all.

Care to elaborate?
I mentioned this in the other Movie thread but I thought that Hateful 8 was one of QT's weakest efforts. It felt like it took forever for anything interesting to happen. Talk, talk, talk, and more talk, talk, talk. I understand that character development is part of the story but the dialogue wasn't very good either.

I went Fincher. I'd rather see a new movie by him than by The Coen Brothers, of whom I am a long-time devotee. But the chances they make another Burn After Reading or Hail Caesar are too much.

This is why I am surprised at the voting on this one.  Would love more discussion here from the voters.  It seems like even the huge fans of the Coens have been divided on A Serious Man, Inside Llewyn Davis, Burn After Reading, and Hail Caesar! ... and that is 4 of their last 5 movies.   I think two of Fincher's last five are a couple of the best movies in the last 10 years - Zodiac and Social Network.  Like others have said, I think he is one of the most consistent director's out there and always puts out quality stuff.  Very surprised in the difference in voting here.

all 8 from top to bottom

Coens - yes they miss about 50% of the time, but when they hit...

Fincher - very solid, but the only movie of his I really love is Fight Club, and the screenplay gets a lot of the credit there.

Nolan - usually delivers, although I was bored with the Dark Knight finale.

Scorsee - always delivers, although he hasn't made anything that's a personal favorite for long time.

Affleck - barely above the next one, due to optimism for his work going forward.

Tarantino - soon lapsing into unintentional self parody, if trends continue, but I'm going to watch the movies anyways

Spielberg - haven't been excited for anything from him since Crystal Skull ruined the IJ franchise.   2005 was a good year.

Anderson - his dvd would probably gather dust for at least 6 months before I was bored enough to watch it

I liked three of those movies by the Coens, but I liked The Social Network, Gone Girl, and Fight Club much better. I did not see Zodiac, so there's that, too. I'm going with my limited peanut gallery knowledge and going with him.

NCFOM and Fargo are still two of the best films I've ever seen, but they seem to do a lot of in-reference and meta drivel that turns me off sometimes.

And before I get jumped on, I own their old films on VHS by hunting them down, etc. Love them. Barton Fink And Miller's Crossing was classics to me in my twenties; I'm just a different person now (including being different for having seen them. I could still watch Miller's Crossing.)

Gotcha, and I completely agree - H8 felt very much like same ol' same ol - just in a different setting.  I thought it was his 2nd worst, just above Death Proof.

That said, in the past decade Spielberg has put out Indy 4 and Warhorse, and I thought both of those were awful as worse than H8, which is why Tarantino ended up with my vote.

I think Ben Affleck is developing into a very good director and going forward I'd be a lot more interested in watching one of his movies over Nolan.

Good post - would have to think about it, but I think my list would be similar.

Follow up question: How many on that list would be in your top 10 directors overall working today?

The problem I am having now is that the only one who would be on my current list left would be Fincher.  Everybody else got knocked out early or I didn't include in the tourney.

Agree for the most part.  I just wish I didn't know that Affleck is in charge of the Batman reboot before I voted.  Just not interested, and that tipped my vote back to Nolan.

Kinda depends on how we qualify top 10 working today.   That seems like we'd have slightly different stipulations than the ones for this survey.   But, using the same formula:

Coens

probably Fincher

I guess I don't know much about them.  So one does more writing on the comedies than the other or something? Does one do more directing than the other?
You know, I don't know because the credits I see are almost always shared. What my guess tells me is that when they get really serious about fate, free will, etc., is that Ethan is the driving force simply because of his background. It's why I like O Brother, Where Art Thou?.

I will say that another factor is that we're not all the movie buffs that you are.  Even with these very popular and notable directors, I haven't seen a lot of their movies.  I think the only director listed that I've seen every movie is Wes Anderson.  It's entirely possible I would vote differently if I had seen everything that these directors have released.

ETA:  For example, the only movie of Ben Affleck I've seen is Argo.

He's my #1 overall...Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is one of my favorite movies and it's not even being included...also directed Seven.

Let's at least give him the proper titles here.

Love the Coens. Would want to see anything by Fincher over them though. So went Fincher

Dude, I can't do all the work for ya guys.  I didn't want to do the entire filmography of directors in the posts.  Some have 40, some had 3.  I just tried to list a couple of their latest movies and a couple that would make people go "ah, that guy".  Figured I would just limit it to 4-5 movies in the tag line and people would either know or look them up if they cared.

It seems to me that the directors with a more recognizable style have done well throughout the rounds - Coen Bros, Tarantino, Wes Anderson are more like genres unto themselves, and as the question is posed, I lean more towards them if given no other information about the movies.  Fincher and now Affleck have made a lot of good movies, but it's hard to say that either has a recognizable style where I would know he had directed a movie just by watching it.  Although I'm about 50% as into movies as a lot of you, so ymmv.

I get what you are saying, but I think that Fincher's movies have a distinct look and tone to them.  Almost like he shoots everything through a blue/green filter or something.

Death proof was such a failure.  It didn't succeed on any level.

#1 still a close one.  I will keep this going through tomorrow, maybe bump it another time or two and call it tomorrow night around 9pm and put up the final 4 matchups.
