Moving to Canada (1 Viewer)

So it's been on my mind to move to Canada for about 2-3 years now and I am ready for a change.

-How tough is it for someone to become a citizen of Canada? -As far as jobs go, how is the working economy doing? -Any suggestions on where to find a place to live? I've been looking at Toronto, Montreal and Halifax.  TIA

I thought we Americans only did this during times of an active draft.  Oh, I know we threaten it every election cycle, but we never do.

I often feel the Canadians mus tget sick of our threats.  It would be sweet if one of their prime ministers would come right out and say "What makes you think we would take you eh?"

Check with HR of the company you'll be working for

they should be able to help assuming you don't have any DUI's on your record

You are going to have to research this big time, starting with any law infractions in the U.S.  Also their government employees are about 1/2 as competent as ours are & that is saying a lot.   Just mentioning  as that is who to go through.  It's going to be a horror show IMO for you.

Temporary visa(maybe up to 6 months) might be the way to go.   Research!

Better get the jump on that because come November, a lot more people will be trying to do the same...

I love Canada. Of the ones you listed I'd go to Montreal, but I'd choose Calgary and west because you have the mountains and skiing.

Canadian dollar is really low right now.  I feel like I can live like a king up there, except the magazines cost so much more.

Canada is great. Change your name to Jays45 for starters.

Greater Toronto Area and Vancouver/Victoria are likely the best bets job wise, but also the most expensive places to live. Montreal is awesome but I know they've lost some key head office jobs to Toronto over the past few years.  Halifax would be a different lifestyle, not as fast paced as Toronto/Montreal which will be like US big cities but cleaner and safer (huge generalization here but also generally true).

I do a lot of work in Toronto and have fielded loose job offers to move there over the years.....the cost of living compared to here is just astronomical.  A house in Mississauga or Oakville that's the same size as what I own now would be 3x at least.  You get a massive pay raise, but not 3-4x.  I like Toronto plenty, but it'd be an entirely different lifestyle.  The exchange being at like $0.65 helps, but still.  Might be different for OP if he is actually in Boston, where COL is much higher.  I'm guessing he's in Vermont though?

I do really like Montreal and the Maritimes.  Really hope to get out west sometime.  Never been to Vancouver and we do a decent amount of work in Calgary/Edmonton.  Want to get to Quebec City too, but I don't speak French.
