Moving to San Diego (1 Viewer)

It took much longer than I expected, but I have accepted a job in Poway. As mentioned earlier, my BIL and his family live in La Mesa, so we will be looking in that area. Interested in any feedback on this.

awesome news. I am hopeful that your wife can get the medical marijuana she needs for her back. Happy for you both and I hope she can find relief.

Never had medical marijuana. Is it like the most potent weed out there or just regular stuff? I always have this picture in my head of Half Baked.

It's usually good stuff, but there is plenty of good stuff out there without having to bother with a card.

AWESOME! Looking fwd to grabbing a beer when you get out here. If you have any questions - let'em rip.

La Mesa is not so good. Poway is a good area though. Can you get anywhere near that? You may want to look at Mira Mesa also.

Congratulations, GB. I remember meeting up for a drink when you were in OC a few years ago and you talking about moving out here then. I'm glad it's working out for you guys.

As for the medicinal marijuana, it's ridiculously easy to get your license even without legitimate medical issues. And most of the dispensaries deliver now, so you don't even have to leave the house. Good times.

I spent 16 years in La Mesa. Can vary wildly by street/elevation/neighborhood.

If there's a specific place you're looking at, let me know. No need for PM's. We do this #### out in the open.

Poway sucks balls. Mira Mesa sucks too, unless you're Viatnamese. Scripps Ranch would be decent.

If you have familly in La Mesa and work in Poway, split the difference and get a place in Tierrasanta.

Thanks. I am hopeful that the climate and the MM will be helpful for my wife's health. Also, we don't (can't) have kids, and my BIL and his wife had their first last August, so we are looking forward to being involved in his life. I think that will also be a positive for my wife in particular.

The climate will be a huge improvement. We just got several inches of snow the past two days, and temps have been in the 20s. We're not going to miss that.

With my wife's health, it is a priority to be close to my BIL. So we have to find somewhere close to La Mesa. My BIL lives in a new neighborhood in La Mesa that seems pretty nice to me, as someone who doesn't know the area.

Also, my in-laws help us on a daily basis and will also be moving out. We are planning to buy one house for the four of us, something with multiple masters or an in-law suite or something like that. So it is definitely going to be an unusual living situation... please pray for us...

Thanks, Zed. We'll have to do that again sometime. Hope all is well with your situation.

This. I lived in La Mesa for quite a few years and Mira Mesa as well. I will say this: If you live in La Mesa, those summers will be kind of hot. I know you stated you are used to the humidity, etc. living on the east coast (trust me, I am from Maryland, I know) you can tolerate it. It's just envious when you are baking in 95 degree weather in July and literally just 8 miles west will net you 10-20 degree drop in temp, depending on the day. And La Mesa borders a town called Santee, sometimes referred to as "Clan-tee" - I am sure you get the drift. Tierrasanta is a nice suburb that is very quite. I lived there for like 6 months at one point in time. Be prepared to see Marines and Navy dudes everywhere, especially in Mira Mesa(reason I lived there for 4 years). North Park is hipsterville. La Jolla is where the rich and uber rich live - Mitt Romney has a pad there. Poway/Rancho Penasquitos are close to your work and borders on being "North County" - classic socal suburbia. Think the first 3 seasons of Weeds. You could live in Ensenada, and go south a little for work. Great laid back adult beach community. Downtown/Gaslamp is cool, but lots of young ##### bags populate the area most nights. Stil hip though. Don't live south of Downtown. Stay away from National City and Chula Vista. Stay away from the SDSU campus area too. Santee/El Cajon area are considered "East County" and this is where the "Bros" live. Think anyone that listens to Avenged Sevenfold, is white, flat billed hat, lifted pick up truck, and lots of tats. You get the idea. As mentioned, the food is very good there, the weather is excellent - a true Mediterranean climate - and get used to hearing Social Distortion on the radio every 3rd song. And they have this weird game they play called Over The Line, a weird beach/cricket/softball/3 man sport. If you have any other questions, I lived all over San Diego for 12 years.

I lived in Poway and RPQ and loved it. I would pass on Manila Mesa. Santucky would be OK but too far inland for my liking. Tierrasanta or Mission Gorge areas might be better if you're working in La Mesa.

We called it Santucky.

You could live in Ensenada, and go south a little for work. Great laid back adult beach community.

Think you mean Encinitas, here. Ensenada would be a little bit of a commute. It's a nice beach community, but it's in Mexico.

LOL. Yes. Encinitas! Ha. Solana Beach, Del Mar. All about the same. If you like horse racing, Del Mar is where it's at.

La Mesa is a fine area, especially the in the hills north of the 8. Don't let the haters dissuade you from living near your family JWB.

How old are you?

The move should be easy without kids and still young.
I'm 45 and my wife is 43. I'm sure a move would be more difficult with kids, but my wife's disability does complicate things. And our move is tied to her parents' move, so that also makes it a bit more complicated.

If you really want to live in La Mesa, look at Mt. Helix and neighborhoods in the hills south of University Ave above Helix High. As you go up the hill from the high school, the neighborhoods get better. Anything Maple and above is decent on the south side of Normal Ave. Don't go any lower or north of Normal.

This is the Lake Murray area. Hit or miss, but mostly ok. Also if you go a little west you get to Del Cerro, which can be good.

Poway sucks balls? Come on. It's where a lot of the wealthy QCOM guys planted roots, and the school district is top notch.

A comedian on a cruise ship had a joke about Ensenada. He asked the audience if anyone knew what "Ensenada" means when translated to English. Nobody said anything. Then he said "It means Ense-nothing" and after we spent the day there, the joke was more accurate than funny.

it's a stucco/strip mall community east of 15. at least since 56 went through it's better to get to the coast, but it's a pain in the ### to get downtown. if you have to live on the east side of north county, sure, it's ok.

Those are pretty specific personal preferences. Personally, I like newer looking homes, like having stores nearby, and don't care about access to downtown. I live nowhere near Poway, BTW. The guy is already going to be working there so I commented on it.

My BIL lives up the hill from Helix High, in a new neighborhood. I've only been there once, but it seemed nice enough to me.

I don't really know the roads yet, but I'll keep this in mind.

He's going to work there but sounds like he stuck with La Mesa and the surrounding areas. There are pockets of nice places to live there, but some awful places too.

glad to hear you're finally taking the plunge. 70 and gorgeous this week
Yeah, we got 10 inches of snow Tuesday night, and it's been in the 20s. Admittedly, this is unusual for Virginia Beach, but I'm looking forward to the climate change.

Update. After seeing more than 60 properties, we have gone under contract on a home in Santee. I read the comments earlier in the thread about Santee, which didn't seem too complimentary, but the neighborhood and surrounding area seem nice.

We will need internet service, etc. I'm leaning towards DirectTV, which I've never had, instead of cable. But we will still need internet and I anticipate my wife and in-laws will want home phone service rather than relying solely on cell phones, so we'll need that, too.

Any recommendations on this?

Congrats buddy! Welcome to the land of beautiful weather. although It's been oddly humid this week.

I have direct tv and like it a lot. And as a new subscriber you'll get the Sunday ticket for free. I think we'd both get $10 off a month is you use my referral for direct tv. Let me know.

And now that you're in town, I'll let my buddy know you might be interested in his charger tickets if he doesn't use them.

Again, congrats! And I hope it does wonders for the wife!

If you are in a Cox area and want a landline, their internet/cable/landline deal is pretty good. They get all the channels I could ask for too. Time Warner sucks out here (and everywhere?) Haven't heard good things about Uverse either.

ETA: and Cox has Redzone. If you are a Charger fan, no ned for Sunday ticket obviously, so Redzone when the Chargers aren't playing is all you need. And sometimes when the Chargers are playing redone is the way to go as well. They don't always sell out, and Redzone moves too fast to block out their clips (or whatever loophole they have for that).

You a drinker? Santee had two breweries/distilleries. Manzanita and BNS. Both brew and distill. And the best part about Santee is you are closer to Alpine than the rest of us. Best IPA brewer in the world. Plus their BBQ kicks ###.

Thanks, GB. I would use your referral for DTV, but my BIL also has it, so I have to give him my discount if we go that way.

Appreciate letting your buddy know. I have tickets with my BIL for the Seattle game, but nothing else thus far.

Good info in both posts. Yes, I am a drinker (to put it mildly). :banned:

I've been to Manzanita and plan to go there plenty if this home works out. I'm not familiar with BNS or Alpine but will check them out.

Alpine's Nelson and Pure Hoppiness are two of my favorite IPAs of all time.

You are in the right town then.

I go to Alpine 2-3 times a month. Their IPAs and BBQ are that good.

If you ever want to hit the beach for a beer meet me OB Pizza Port and I'll make Tommy buy us some beers.
