Muffed Punt Return Recovery (1 Viewer)

Sorry if this was asked already. The Broncos muffed a punt and the Raiders recovered it but it didn't show up for my team in an ESPN league. Does anyone know if this will be fixed or is a muff not a fumble? I'm in a close matchup so I just wanted to clear it up. Thanks.

Should be awarded as a fumble. A muff (<---nice name) is a type of fumble from how I understand it. Pts should be updated, sometimes these non-standard plays update later.

Thanks, I just wanted to know before tonight's game since I'm in a close match and I only have Gronkowski left so I need all the points I can get.

:blackdot: A muff is not a type of fumble. It can't be a fumble if they never have possession. No points for you.

Here are the definitions of fumble and muff according to the NFL rulebook.

FUMBLE: Article 4 A Fumble is any act, other than a pass or kick, which results in loss of player

possession. The term Fumble always implies possession. (8-7-3).

MUFF: Article 5 A Muff is the touching of the ball by a player in an unsuccessful attempt to

obtain possession of a loose ball.

I'm not sure why they're showing one fumble by the Broncos. It contradicts the definitions according to the rule book. I didn't see the play so maybe he had possession and then fumbled it. Or, maybe the fumble will be taken away when they do stat corrections. I was always under the impression that a muff was not a fumble, that's why a muff can't be advanced.

If the player that ends up with the ball doesn't get credited with a fumble recovery then what is it called? There is no muff recovery stat.

I don't know. Maybe I've been mistaken all this time. Perhaps the category should be fumble/muffs recoveries?I guess we'll find out soon enough if the stats get changed for your league.

Not sure of the rules exactly, but in all the years I have played ff muffs always counted as fumbles. I expected your site to be updated but there is nothing you can really do if it doesn't.

FWIW and for future reference, ESPN DOES credit muffed punts as fumble recoveries but doesn't credit them until the next day unlike CBS and Yahoo who credit it immediately as a fumble recovery for D/ST.
