Last week in a fantasy league:

The 1st and 2nd place teams are playing each other, while the 3rd and 4th place teams face off. The winners of these matchups will claim 1st and 3rd place, respectively.

Now, two teams made a trade where the player competing for 1st place receives a strong player from the current 3rd place team. In return, the 3rd place team gets to pick one bench player from the current 1st place team next season.

We’ve never discussed trades that involve multiple seasons, but we did talk once about keeping one player from a team for the next year and decided to stick to single-season rules.

I have seen trades of future draft picks, but not players to be named later. Does not seem within the rules. Also, most leagues have a trade deadline before the championship game.

Involving "future considerations" that are unknown is a slippery slope to possible shenanigans down the road. In addition, since you are not a keeper/dynasty league where zero assets carry over year to year this is crossing a boundary that you guys have already firmly set by not allowing keepers (discussed as a league and decided to stick to single season rules). That statement alone would prohibit such future considerations in a different year off limits.

Unless "future considerations" (wouldn't have known what to call it without people using that term upthread) are expressly permitted in the rules, I would say nothing of that sort should be legal.

It's not very different from trading that player for next year's 1st 2nd and 3rd rounders. Hell the player-to-be-named probably wouldn't even be as valuable as those picks. I wouldn't have any issue with it as long as future picks are allowed to be traded.

And if it's a bench player, why not just execute the trade now so 3rd place can start him?

edit: If my inference is correct, this is a non-keeper league with no future picks being traded? Then no this is a ridiculous scenario for the owners to even propose and insane that the commish doesn't unconditionally shut it down without discussion.
