Musa Smith (1 Viewer)

He's a unrestricted FA at then end of the year and BB has called him, "the future," and he has passed up MA on the depth chart (as everyone knows), what are the chances he gets a starting role?

I know this topic has been discussed a little but what do you think after seeing him in limited time

I think, given the track record of Baltimore backup RB's going to other teams and becoming productive starters (Priest Holmes, Chester Taylor), and given his preseason performance and BB's endorsement, the chances are pretty good he's a starter somewhere next year. I read somewhere that Jamal's contract was essentially a 1-year deal, but I don't know the details. If true, and Jamal doesn't return, Musa could start in Baltimore next year. Mike Anderson will be about 74 years old next year...If he can stay healthy, his age/size/speed/agility could make him a top RB in coming years.

details:Franchise number for RB's last yr was just over $6M...the team had promised Lewis a contract prior to the season, and tagging him would have set ill will in motion big time

the deal he signed had a $5M bonus, for $1M in '06 and $9M or $10M for '07/08

it works out to be a 1yr deal, as the team won't pay him the $9 or 10M next yr...Lewis got the $6M for this season and the team was able to spread the bonus over 3yrs, instead of taking the $6M cap hit this year

IF he stays...not likely as Anderson signed a cap friendly $4M/2yr deal...Jamal would have to rework the huge number due---I don't see that happening

Musa has shown he's back from the injury, and has explosiveness the other 2 lack---he is clearly the back the team will sign as #1, as long as he stays injury free thru the season...a big IF, BTW

I don't see how Holmes and Taylor would have any baring on how Musa would do as a starter.

I think Musa could start somewhere. However, my biggest question is can he really handle a full work load? I remember that he slipped in the NFL draft because of spinal stenosis and then there were the injuries after.

:goodposting: Thanks for the details. Given Jamal's contract and BB's endorsement, it seems there's a good chance Musa's the starter for Baltimore next year. If they re-sign him to a sizable contract before next year's draft, that would seal the deal.

It's my understanding that Musa is a more explosive and more versatile back than the other two. That said, I'm surprised he has not been more involved thus far this season.

i thought suggs had the stenosis, not smith.

this is the same junk as last season.

all i hear is how bad jamal lewis looks. last season he even admitted to dogging it.

but billick keeps him in there.

is he scared to make a change or fiercely loyal or dumb?

not that i know if musa smith would do any better.

it just seems everything i read about lewis is negative or only mildly positive. since a long time ago.

If Smith was such a find, why pay Anderson the money they paid him? I know he's old, but were they that locked on him?

Just seems strange. Maybe they've becomed convinced the last few games...

Lewis surely had no reason being kept in there last year, but he's looked appreciably better this year and the team is winning. No reason to change things now, I would say.

Musa was out all or most of last year, so they didn't know if they could count on him this year. Musa passed Anderson on the depth chart in preseason with great performances.
