Rolling Stone Bill Wyman has an amazing book..."Blues Odyssey". An amazing read starting with the slave trade, it's more of a journey actually as we head from west Africa to England and bands like The Rolling Stones. The origins of country, rock and roll, jazz, it's all there.
How deep into the history of it all do you care about? Ever tried to find out where it all came from? I own an old Ishman Bracey tune from 1928 where he says...."rock church rock" Rock....in 1928? Anyone care about a lone vocalist with guitar? How sad we never heard Bessie Smith sing our National anthem or Robert Johnson playing an electric guitar or his teacher Ike Zinneman at all, he never recorded.
Does any of that above interest you?
I set aside time just for the music, a mixed drink, candles, incense, and most important the time to get lost in the music, talking the headphones and the atmosphere, the....see ya in a couple hours, bye. Actually the most important thing is the music, which is a serious problem many times. What to listen to?
I have sat there a good five minutes debating just where do I want to go? Wander around Texas with Bob Wills, Townes Van Zandt? Roam the Mississippi Delta with Robert Johnson, Son House? Head to the big city and Lou Reed? Doo *** vocal groups? Bob Marley and Peter Tosh mon? Hell, Offspring, Godsmack, Disturbed? Train? Days of the New? The Silencers? Johnny Cash? Janis, Jim and Jimi? Prince, Stevie, Ray, Aretha?
Decisions, decisions, decisons, this is not easy.
So, are you a serious listener, to the point of delving into the origins of it all or not all that into going there, just dig the sounds?
I think I found it at least for now.
