Music guys- What have you done with all your CDs? (1 Viewer)

I have close to 3000 CDs. Some in cases that I would carry to DJ jobs. Some in four-sided racks that spin. Some in standing racks. I have ripped down most of them to mp3. They take up so much room.

What have you guys done with them? I know they are pretty much worthless on ebay. There's something about throwing away a collection that took me 20+ years to accumulate that just doesn't sit well with me. Have you guys bitten the bullet and chucked them?

Nope. Keep the cases in some tubs. Put the discs in a bunch of sleeve holders and put them away. Still used CDs in my car since its an older one but now the player is broke.

Sold them 5 years ago when they still had some value. I still have some, just sitting in the basement. Don't imagine they'll ever be played again. Probably toss them in trash next time I reorganize the basement.

Working on putting mine all on mp3. Have about 2000+ in huge zippered cases that take up so much room. Tried of moving them around. Will probably end up setting what I can to the used CD/Blueray media dealer down the street.

I ripped all my CDs to hard drives years ago. They are stored in the basement away from heat & light in case I ever need to rip them again. My vinyl LPs are down there too.

I ripped all mine years ago and store them in totes in the basement. I still buy CDs. I like having the physical CD and the artwork/notes with the case. As soon as I buy a CD, I rip it and put it in a tote. I have no plans to throw away the CDs.

Was tough throwing out all my cassettes a couple years ago.I still had cassettes from my early childhood up through high school. Of course, lots of memories, experiences, associated with them. Pretty much every cassette brought back a specific memory, or reminded me of a certain period of my life. Incredibly nostalgic. Felt like I was tossing more than just old cassettes in the trash. Like I was "letting go" of something, but not sure exactly what. Was kind of a sad moment to be honest. I felt like the sad banana.

Most of mine have been ripped and stored on multiple hard drives (back up copies). Most were sold to a b/m cd store. I still have a rack of many favorites (200-300?) that's been collecting dust. Just can't seem to toss them, but will eventually.

Also, main music library is Google Play so its on the cloud. Cant' remember the last time I played a physical cd.

Sitting in a plastic tub in my basement. Years ago I ripped them all into iTunes. Now I don't use iTunes anymore, so I'd have to do it all over again. I'm not the techiest guy in the world so I'm worried about getting rid of them before I have a permament electronic copy. I will have to look into the google cloud idea.

I almost exclusively listen to Spotify these days, so I'm not sure the value of doing it.

I still have a box of a few hundred cassettes. I cannot bring myself to throw them away even though I have no way of playing them. Too many memories. I have kept them for 30 years. Why not keep them forever at this point?

I finally got rid of my cds a couple years ago thru a service called murfie.

At the time they paid for the shipping. I boxed up my cds and sent it to them. Then you can sell them in their online market place.

Over the last 2.5 years I've probably sold about 100 discs at 3 bucks a pop. They keep 30%.

You can also trade with others for free to get new music. Perry neat service.

I'll get an email every couple weeks saying I sold a disc. And I don't have to worry about storing them.

Garage sale

About 2 years ago had 60-80 CDS for like 50 cents each

A lady had 8 in her hand and was still looking.

I said give me 10 bucks and just take the box. She was so happy.

I'm a terrible negotiator

yes burned all of mine to my computer years ago and gave them away to goodwill.

They're in a bunch of shoe boxes in a closet. I just went through them last week after getting the urge to listen to XTC Oranges and Lemons.

I still have mine. I used to work in radio, so I have a ton. I will probably go through and see if there's any that might still fetch a decent price on ebay. not sure about the rest, I don't want to just toss them...

I was a vinyl guy who never loved the CD format. The industry forced the move so we have a bunch taking up space. I moved to downloading and then streaming a decade ago but Mrs. Eephus still plays CDs and buys new ones at merch tables at shows. I wanted to dump them all a couple of years ago but she vetoed the motion.

I ripped the ones I cared to keep the music from and sold the CDs themselves to those buy/sell/trade music places that are around. Now I'd be curious how much traction you'd get doing that at all.

Donate them to the local library and take the tax write off
Will the library take discs without cases?

I threw all my cases away, the discs are in a 100 disc spindle (the type you get when you buy 100 blank discs) and sleeves. The spindle is actually on my dresser as I haven't decided what to do with them since we just moved. Inclined to toss the ones I won't use in the car (my highlander still has a disc player and not sirius or a flash drive).

sold them like 7 years ago. got like 100 bucks for 500 CDs on craigslist. would be lucky to get 10 bucks now I think

Still have some cassettes.

I have close to 800. Most of them are boxed up now, but I'd say about 100 of them are still displayed in my CD/DVD rack. I refuse to sell them, after spending so much money on them over the last 25 years.

Another vote for Spotify, all my music is there. Cd's are stored in a duffel bag. We occasionally get drunk, start talking about the good old days, and bust the bag out.

Shoot, I'm still trying to figure out what to do with my cassettes and 8-tracks.

My Cd's are all sitting in limbo. I do remember my very first CD was "Prince Purple Rain" :loco:

A family member sold about 300 or so CDs for $200 on Craigslist a couple years ago in Southern California market.

Still have some cassettes.
I still have the Cornell '77 tape, first bootleg I owned and it burned a hole in my car stereo back in the mid 90's. Unfortunately I don't own a cassette player now, thank goodness for archive.org.

" post="18307088" timestamp="1440839292"]disc media was officially dead when apple stopped including it in their laptops....

/shtick

I made a lot of money off physical media - damn you, Apple!

Question for all of you with thousands, anyone have the soundtrack to Secret of my Success? Great 80s tracks. Owned it on cassette years ago. Won't pay the $30 asking price online. If anyone has it, I'll buy it or would love the digital copy. :bag:

Don't have it, but I do have the title track and The Price of Love on mp3. I love me some 80s cheese. :hifive:

I am trying to think what other notable songs from it I would even want.

If it's just about space, put the discs in notebooks and chuck all the jewel cases and sell the storage racks on craigslist or donate to Goodwill. That will free up a lot of space for you.

If you don't want to keep them at all, then you have several options, which have all been mentioned and can be used in combination: Amazon, Garage sale, Craigslist, Ebay, Charitable donation (I think the IRS still allows $2-3 per disc deduction), Library donation, etc.

Like some here, I still have my CD's and still occasionally buy new CD's. I also TRADE cd's at musicboomerang.com. I only trade a few month, but it's fun and the community there loves music and gives good recommendations.

sounds made up
Why would I make it up?

I still sell discs on Murfie for $3 a pop...so people are still buying discs and paying for them. Not sure why a guy paying 66 cents a disc seems hard to believe.
