I used to hate all country songs

But then I realized how often I enjoy acoustic ballads

Americana and the revival of bluegrass/folk made me a little more open to The Ryman crowd

As long as I don't have to call it country I'm good
You’d probably like what the marketing people call “alt country.”

All genres have good music.  All genres have bad music.  Sometimes it just takes finding a few songs you like in a genre to open your mind.  I think a lot times when a person rejects an entire genre it's because it doesn't jive with their identity as a person.   A ton of horrible pop country has been made in the last 35 years.  But a genre of music should be judged by its good examples, not its bad examples.  Rock also has a ton of horrible examples.

I know a lot of rock aficionados who later became obsessed with bluegrass and country from the 50's, 60's, and 70's.  Most alt country fans I know didn't start as fans of hard rock.

I don't consciously seek out alt C but there is some bleed over no doubt

I like storytellers (Jason Isbell is a good example)

My favorite group for about 10 years running has been these folks

ETA: better quality here

Aside - I think that second link isn't searchable on YouTube, but I have had it bookmarked for years. Even though I've seen them close to 25 times, this one was extra special. It was my daughter's first concert (Lincoln Center Out of Doors Americana Festival) and she became a fan of The Lone Bellow for life that night. Actually both my kids like them (22 & 12), which is a first. He’s into EDM, my daughter prefers Kpop.
