Musicians who sold out (1 Viewer)

You know who had a great gimmick and sold out too soon... Jewel. 

Oddly hot, awesome surfer girl juggs, appealed to men and women, and wrote her dopey half baked Joni Mitchell stuff. Had a great debut and sold millions with her "I live in my van" story. 

And before that could be worn dry, the last I remembered, she was doing an "ironic" video of her Being sexy and dancing that seemed a lot more earnest than sexy. She lost all her steam way too soon

Keep in mind, plenty of his music throughout his career from the beginning to now has been message oriented. He has always written songs about issues.

Springsteen for me. Grew up with his first four albums, primarily Born to Run & Darkness On The Edge of Town. The River came out and we were kinda scratching our heads with some of the songs but it still had the E Street feel to it so it was ok. Then Nebraska in a wtf? moment followed by Born in the USA and just like that, a great icon got paid. Good for him but haven't listened to anything he's done since, musically or politically ;)

Some people will argue Miles Davis sold out when he went electric, trying to appeal the black youth.

Personally I don't agree and think '69 through the '70s was his best work.

 
You know who sold out to the point... Where it's almost easier to imagine they died in a plane crash after their first album than come to terms with the dreck they've brokered in after a transcendent debut... The kings of Leon. 

Youth, Young and Manhood is one of the five best debut albums ever     

I could have used album run of that  But instead we got southern fried cold play

Pyromania was awesome and the end of Leppard for me. Hysteria is awful.  

Aerosmith and Def Lep are the answers. They went from cool, great rock bands to ballads and weak soft rock.

Obviously we've all heard this before...Hysteria was obviously  a more pop sound and one of the most commercially successful albums in the history of music.  Those facts don't make Hysteria a sell out album IMHO. 

Put me in the category that Hysteria was their last great album.

Metallica.  They got popular by fans passing around copies of their albums and shows.  As soon as they started making real money, they clamped down on Napster and other sites that allowed people to share music.  They ####in disgust me

 
Can someone explain to me what selling out is? All I've seen so far is a bunch of butt-hurt snobs who hate it when their favorites try something new.

 
Black Eyed Peas definitely come to mind.   They were a progressive hip hop group from Cali starting out.  Hell, Eazy E was the one who signed and discovered them.  After two quality albums, the powers that be decided to hire Fergie, change up their sound and make absolute crap pop music to sell records  :X :thumbdown:

 
"Selling out" is such a joke.  As soon as a bunch of people like their music, they've "sold out" - some people are just dorky enough to think they deserve them because they were "first"

I'm sure these bands feelings are hurt that you think they "sold out"

Metallica was making "real money" before the Internet was invented. 

And the music industry has been in the crapper since napster. What was so wrong with compensating those who give you your product?

Lets say you establish a brand in a product, lets say its Soda.  And you have built a business and formulated a taste that appeals to your market and you use Cane Sugar.  And your soda grows and grows and you say, you know what, we could grow bigger if we used High Fructose Corn Syrup.   We could make a lot more product and make a lot more money.

But in so doing, you alienate your customer base who grew your product initially. 

Is it a "joke" if people complain about that product evolution?

 
Lots of misses in this thread so far. 

I will give two concrete examples, then my best most obvious one. 

1. Green Day - American Idiot was such an obvious and clear sellout album. What sucks is they didn't need to go that route - Dookie sold quite well, why the desire to water your music and lyrics down? It was effective commercially (I still cringe remembering my parents blasting AI when I would come home from college) but damn was it garbage served warm  

2. Kings of Leon - I was so into these guys, tunes like Charmer and Trani. Then comes Only By the Night, and this 20 yr old intern sitting next to me at work (smoking hot) is playing two tracks over and over on low in her cube - Sex on Fire and Somone Like You. I used to fantasize about smashing those computer speakers 

I caught a set of theirs a year later, ballad city, left after 4 songs. They achieved their goal, stadium anthems for the masses.

The last and most obvious one will need to be on a computer to set it up and do it justice. Stay tuned

The job of most businesses is to maximize revenue or profits.  If, in doing what you said, he does 20x as much business as he did with cane sugar, but the initial 1x is alienated,  I would say he succeeded.

I don't call it a joke to complain about product evolution, I call it a joke to complain about the result of the evolution.
