Muslims in NYC Planning to Build Second Mosque Near Ground Zero (1 Viewer)

Well, on to the next topic. . . Good to see the Muslims had some sensitivity on the issue.
If you call giving into enormous public opposition sensitivity...
Oh the poor libs on this board, they must be very sad today. :lmao:
Why? All the libs were asking is that the government not overstep it's bounds (seemingly a right wing talking point) and disallow people their religious freedom. If it's true then this is win-win, well, except for all the hypocrites who loudly wanted us to betray our founding fathers' dream (pssst...that'll be most of you doing the loudest cheering)
Yeah, somehow liberals always miraculously become staunch Constitutionalists when the KKK and terrorists are involved.

2. A few years ago, there was a movement to build a theme park near Gettysburg. The local townspeople felt that it would be demeaning to the war memorial, and got the city council to have it voted down.
Does anybody have a link to this? I keep looking but can't find anything.
I'm actually aware of this. I'll see if I can dig up a link.
Here you go. Casino, not a theme park.
 So it was a casino near Gettysburg and a theme park near Manassas? Sweet.

Burton is paraphrasing Charles Krauthammer's column on this issue. But because he didn't blatantly plagiarize it, he got the battlefield wrong. Disney America was supposed to be built on the site of the Bull Run battlefield, not Gettysburg.

Looks like political correctness scored a big win today.
Divisiveness is a terrible business model for an alleged cultural center. The project made zero sense at all levels. It is almost so stupid that it seemed like it had to have been a publicity stunt for who knows what purpose.

It is still possible we are being duped by this story. There is enough motivation for someone to pull off an elaborate website and post this story.

I'm confused. You keep saying you're not demonizing all Muslims but here you're grouping them as terrorists. So much flip flopping it's hard to keep track of. At least you're tacitly admitting that your side was on the wrong side of the constitution on this.

I am not grouping them all. But in this case I think this was a very anti-west statement being made by a group of radical Muslims. It was meant as a symbol of conquering America. IMHO, the intent here was pure evil because it made no logical sense. A Muslim cultural center to promote multiculturalism at ground zero?.....dumbest idea of all-time.

If you want to live somewhere less free, move. I believe in our founding documents which, like it or not, guarantee the freedoms in our country. Not for some, for all.
Your side refuses to acknowledge any distinction between what can be done and what should be done. I would gladly fight for the right for you to burn an American flag. And if you dared do it in front of my face, I'd beat you to a pulp. Just because something is legal does not make it moral.
Why would I burn the flag? You're the one that wants to use the Constitution as toilet paper because you don't like something it guarantees for all of us.
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."Does it say anything in the above about location being a right?

Besides, I thought this was a cultural center? Did not know the establishment of cultural centers was addressed there.

Wow. Hyperbole much? Talk about a huge leap. This is headed by the guy the Bushies picked to lead dialogue with muslims. 2 blocks from ground zero. In the area formally know as their neighborhood. What's the use of having a community center outside therir community? Lots of muslims in the neighborhood. Lots of musliims died at 9/11. Glad the grain fed midwestern "real americans" know better than the people who live their.

If I got any of the facts wrong earlier, blame Dennis Prager. Although maybe I heard him wrong.

Anyhow, if the story is true about them backing down, good deal.

Yeah, at least 19.

That's a dumb comment. According to the BBC, at least 70 Muslims died in the Twin Towers. But so what? Not sure what their dying has to do with this cultural center/mosque.

Few years apart (like about 15). Casino is not quite dead, yet. The odd thing is the guy behind the casino in the 'burg is a long time supporter of battlefield preservation. He owns several businesses around town including the local Harley Davidson dealer, and is going to donate a bunch of acreage to the NMP after he passes.Anyway, been shot down a few times, but he'll come back with at least one more variation of the proposal before he gives up.

So what does that say about using Prager as a source for anything?
I probably shouldn't have written that; I'm sure the mistake was mine. But the point Prager was making is solid. The mosque shouldn't be built there.
Why not? You've made claims that a bunch of bad stuff Christians have done throughout history was done by people who weren't 'real' Chrustians. So why are moderate Mudlims unable to fulfil their wishes because of the acts of people they consider to not be 'real' Muslims? Btw, what are your thoughts on Columbus Day? Have you fought this hard to remove CD from our holiday calendar because of the acts of this Christian against natives of the Americas and surrounding islands? Is that not an insult to Native Americans that we should remove?

Many native Americans do believe Columbus Day is an insult to them. But I am not Native American, and I think that Columbus's feat was an amazing one and deserves to be celebrated. I have no idea what it has to do with this issue. It's true I don't believe that the terrible acts we discussed before were performed by true Christians in the true spirit of Christianity. Was 9/11 performed in the true spirit of Islam? I offer no opinion. But I note that around the world today, nearly 100% of all of the acts of terror are performed by Muslims.

I can't believe the hysteria over this situation. And the backtracking by Obama and Reid is, to put it simply, shameful. I really hope they go through with this now. If they don't, it will be a victory for the ignorant.

Oh yes you absolutely do. You pretty much scream your opinion about them with every post, including this one.

If that story is true, I think Harry Reid deserves a lot of credit

WASHINGTON (AP) - Add another election-year hurdle for Democrats: President Barack Obama's forceful defense of the right of Muslims to build a mosque near the World Trade Center site.

His comments are giving Republicans a campaign-year cudgel and forcing Democrats to address a divisive issue within weeks of midterm contests that will decide the balance of power in Washington. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, in a competitive re-election fight, was the highest profile Democrat to move away from Obama on the matter.

"The First Amendment protects freedom of religion," Reid's spokesman Jim Manley said in a statement Monday. "Senator Reid respects that but thinks that the mosque should be built some place else."
What a complete POS Harry Reid is. It's stuff like this that gives politicians a poor reputation. Harry Reid knows better, which makes his position on this issue disgusting. If I lived in Nevada, I'd pull the lever for Sharon Angle.

Edit: DOH!

You don't like when Glen Beck throws out labels like socialist, but you do the same when you call your opponents ignorant. The people who are being ignorant are the people who are building this building to promote multiculturism (in their own words). If that is truly their motive they have failed completely. This is a statement of hate and divisiveness, that in other circumstances you would oppose. It is a dumb idea, so dumb that there is no way their stated purpose is the truth. Besides, the name of the group behind this is the Cordoba Initiative, which for Muslims is a reference to their conquering past. It is like if a group of Americans called themselves the The Hiroshima Initiative and stated their goal was to create goodwill to the Japanese people. It is utter BS, and if you thought about it would realize it. This is not about a group of New Yorkers looking for a place to worship. There is a group of local Muslims who are going ahead and building a mosque in this area with little to no opposition. It is this monument to terrorism that is being opposed.

 Can you explain this? What did Harry Reid do that was so wrong?

Also, he is in Nevada, not Utah.

Obama’s Ground Zero Dodge (LINK)

The president bravely asserted what no one contests, then voted “present” on the question that matters.

Pres. Barack Obama’s ringing statement in favor of the Ground Zero mosque had a gaping escape clause: He didn’t necessarily support the mosque.

Not that he bothered to spell that out for his entranced listeners at an iftar dinner at the White House last Friday night, or to those of his supporters who rushed to hail the “finest moment” of his presidency. “Moment” turned out to be the right word. Less than 24 hours later he was telling reporters he hadn’t taken a position on the “wisdom” of the mosque project, only on the organizers’ “right to build a place of worship and community center on private property in lower Manhattan.”

Obama managed to stake a brave stand on a principle no one seriously contests — the legal right to build the mosque — while voting “present” on the question that matters: whether they should or not. This is high-toned dodginess, insipidity masquerading as incisiveness.

Obama’s weekend meanderings had the clarifying effect of separating the question of legality from considerations of prudence and advisability. If the president, whose tolerance for minorities is beyond reproach, can pointedly decline to endorse the wisdom of the project, why are all the critics beyond the pale?
Fair point.

Last night I was watching an interview with an American Islamic woman who had lost a cousin in the Towers and been one of the helpers trying to save lives during 9/11. She stated the issues involved very eloquently: if the opposition to the cultural center succeeded, it would mean that Americans held American Muslms, and the religion of Islam in general, as responsible for 9/11. Had there been no loud opposition, perhaps the center might have been relocated. But for the builders of the center to give in now would be a surrender to everything that America is NOT supposed to stand for. I admired this woman and fully agreed with her. And I stand by my statement that this would be a victory for the ignorant. Unfortunately Jon your own post proves it. You state that "Cordoba" is a reference to the Muslims' conquering past. This is simply a lie, spread by Newt Gingrich and others. The word actually refers to the attempt by Muslims to live in peace with the western world; that is how it has been used by this Imam and other moderate Muslims in the last several decades. You state that the cultural center, which will include, along with the Mosque, a bowling alley, basketball court, and restaurants, will be a "monument to terrorism." You're smarter than this. Between this issue, illegal immigration, and gay marriage this nation is going through a bad time right now, in which populist anger without reflection or insight is running amok. It reminds me a little bit of McCarthyism and the Red Scare. As with those days, I predict that in a decade from now people will look back on this and be somewhat ashamed of their initial reactions.

How the "ground zero mosque" fear mongering began

http://www.salon.com/news/politics/war_roo..._mosque_origins

The right doing what they do best, spreading fear during election cycles. What's changed in the past 2 years on this other than being the wedge issue du jour?

Dec. 21, 2009: Conservative media personality Laura Ingraham interviews Abdul Rauf's wife, Daisy Khan, while guest-hosting "The O'Reilly Factor" on Fox. In hindsight, the segment is remarkable for its cordiality. "I can't find many people who really have a problem with it," Ingraham says of the Cordoba project, adding at the end of the interview, "I like what you're trying to do."
