Let me start off saying that this is extremely early for a mock draft, but I wanted to do this while team strengths and weaknesses are fresh in my mind.
A couple of things to point out: I don't see the RB position as a need because I think that Marcel Shipp and/or J.J. Arrington could be serviceable NFL running banks if they had a decent offensive line. I've seen several Cardinals games this season and Arrington is literally taking a hit from an opposing player as he's taking handoffs from Warner or McCown.
Denny Green has already said that he plans on bringing in some offensive lineman via free agency, which would allow him to focus this draft on brining in 'impact players' and playmakers that this franchise so desperately needs
Defensive Line is also another area of concern as is DB.
Here is my early, early 2006 Cardinals mock draft:
Round 1 : Jay Cutler , QB, Vanderbilt
After passing on QBs such as Ben Roethlisberger, Philip Rivers, Byron Leftwich, Aaron Rodgers, and Charlie Frye in recent drafts the Cardinals finally nab their QB of the future as they get set to move into their new stadium in Glendale.
With the Cardinals likely to re-sign Kurt Warner, the Cardinals will be afforded the luxury of bringing Cutler along slowly, and allowing him plenty of time to develop into the new 'face of the Cardinals'.
Round 2 : Jesse Mahelona, DT, Tennessee
Some much needed help for an undersized D-Line that was totally dominated at times by opponents' offensive lines. Denny Green brings in another big-time prospect from a big-time program that can step right in and contribute immediately. The duo of Mahelona and Dockett could develop into something special for the Cardinals, if Mahelona can add more muscle. With a starting front 4 of Okeafor, Mahelona, Dockett, and Berry, the Cardinals could have one of the elite pass rushes in the game. This D-Line was totally overwhelmed following Russell Davis' season ending injury, and definately is in need of playmakers
Round 3 :Will Blackmon, CB, Boston College
Antrel Rolle was a virtual non-factor in '05 due to nagging injuries. The selection of Blackmon gives the Cardinals another playmaking DB to challenge Rolle and/or Macklin for one of the starting CB positions, or to play the nickel. Blackmon would definately be a great value for the Cardinals here, and would fill a definate need, as the Cardinals are extremely thin at the CB position.
Round 4 : DonTrell Moore, RB, New Mexico
Denny Green clearly does not want Marcel Shipp anywhere near his starting lineup, or roster for that matter. This may be the season that the two part ways, or that Green gives Shipp an extremely lesser role in his offense
Moore could be the most underrated back in this draft class, and has the potential to immediately be a very good change-of-pace or 3rd down back, which is why I think that he would be a great value here for the Cardinals.
