My early 2006 Cardinals mock draft (4 rounds)- (1 Viewer)

Let me start off saying that this is extremely early for a mock draft, but I wanted to do this while team strengths and weaknesses are fresh in my mind.

A couple of things to point out: I don't see the RB position as a need because I think that Marcel Shipp and/or J.J. Arrington could be serviceable NFL running banks if they had a decent offensive line. I've seen several Cardinals games this season and Arrington is literally taking a hit from an opposing player as he's taking handoffs from Warner or McCown.

Denny Green has already said that he plans on bringing in some offensive lineman via free agency, which would allow him to focus this draft on brining in 'impact players' and playmakers that this franchise so desperately needs

Defensive Line is also another area of concern as is DB.

Here is my early, early 2006 Cardinals mock draft:

Round 1 : Jay Cutler , QB, Vanderbilt

After passing on QBs such as Ben Roethlisberger, Philip Rivers, Byron Leftwich, Aaron Rodgers, and Charlie Frye in recent drafts the Cardinals finally nab their QB of the future as they get set to move into their new stadium in Glendale.

With the Cardinals likely to re-sign Kurt Warner, the Cardinals will be afforded the luxury of bringing Cutler along slowly, and allowing him plenty of time to develop into the new 'face of the Cardinals'.

Round 2 : Jesse Mahelona, DT, Tennessee

Some much needed help for an undersized D-Line that was totally dominated at times by opponents' offensive lines. Denny Green brings in another big-time prospect from a big-time program that can step right in and contribute immediately. The duo of Mahelona and Dockett could develop into something special for the Cardinals, if Mahelona can add more muscle. With a starting front 4 of Okeafor, Mahelona, Dockett, and Berry, the Cardinals could have one of the elite pass rushes in the game. This D-Line was totally overwhelmed following Russell Davis' season ending injury, and definately is in need of playmakers

Round 3 :Will Blackmon, CB, Boston College

Antrel Rolle was a virtual non-factor in '05 due to nagging injuries. The selection of Blackmon gives the Cardinals another playmaking DB to challenge Rolle and/or Macklin for one of the starting CB positions, or to play the nickel. Blackmon would definately be a great value for the Cardinals here, and would fill a definate need, as the Cardinals are extremely thin at the CB position.

Round 4 : DonTrell Moore, RB, New Mexico

Denny Green clearly does not want Marcel Shipp anywhere near his starting lineup, or roster for that matter. This may be the season that the two part ways, or that Green gives Shipp an extremely lesser role in his offense

Moore could be the most underrated back in this draft class, and has the potential to immediately be a very good change-of-pace or 3rd down back, which is why I think that he would be a great value here for the Cardinals.

If you know anything about Denny Green like those of us that were stuck with him in Minnesota you would know...

He NEVER drafts by need, he drafts best player available..

See Larry Fitzgerald 2 Years ago.

:goodposting: If FatDumb is actually the coach there next year remains to be seen.I still think they draft RB.

As usual you've made the proper projections, but I just don't see the Cards being that smart.

I don't think Denny will wait til lineman develop. They need the help now. Sure they'll probably draft one or two but ....

I think he's going to acquire an RB from the veteran committee: FTaylor, MBennett, Edge,CMart, KBarlow, Antwain, THenry, Whizzenator, Ahman, Najeh, RickyTheWeed, PittmanTheWifeBeater, etc. The Cards aren't going to get the "Big Stud RB" (I refuse to say his name anymore - it's so played) and there's plenty to like about the Cards offense to attract a seasoned RB.If he can somehow get a Leinart or Jay Cutler, I could see him going with that but Kurt Warner is proving to be substantial.I agree with azcards33 - they need a better line on both sides.

Defensive Line is also another area of concern as is DB.

Here is my early, early 2006 Cardinals mock draft:

Round 1 : Eric Winston, OT, Miami

Oliver Ross may have been the biggest bust of the 2005 Free Agent signing period, Leonard Davis is still not playing up to his potential at the Tackle position, and the Cardinals are currently starting two sub-NFL quality players at the Guard positions, including a converted DE in Fred Wakefield.

The drafting of an OT early would allow the Cardinals to give Oliver Ross one more season to regain his form as a solid player, and could also allow the Cardinals to move Leonard Davis to his more natural Guard positon that he played collegiately at the University of Texas.

Round 2 : Davin Joseph, OT/G , Oklahoma

Another guy to come in and help solidify the offensive line. Is extremely valuable in the sense that he could play either guard or tackle. Again, this line is extremely bad an needs multiple players that can come in and start or provide depth. Most likely would be able to come in and immediately compete for a starting job at one of the guard positions

Round 3 : Jonathan Harris. DT, Virginia Tech

When Russell Davis suffered a season-ending injury early this season, the Cardinals defensive line took a big hit and have since struggled to stop opposing offenses.

The drafting of Williams would give the Cardinals another big, playmaking defensive lineman to play alongside Darnell Dockett, and help the Cardinals stop opposing RBs.

The Cardinals have done everything they could to to get the job done using smoke and mirrors (stunts, shifts, movement, etc.) and none of that has worked, meaning that it's time that this positon be addressed in the draft
It is Jonathan Lewis, not Harris

Rod Wright is going to fall that far?
It's possibleI've seen him projected anywhere from the middle of the 1st round to the middle of Round 2

yea marcus vick would be a good pick at this point. :bag: :boxing:
I'm not saying, or insinuating that Vick would come in and immediately be an impact player, however, on Day 2 of the draft, a player's upside or potential is taken into account much more than it is on Day 1 as the draft becomes much more of a crapshoot.Denny Green has never refused to take a player due to character issues, and as a 4th rounder Vick could be brought in extremely cheap and be given the opportunity to earn a job on the roster. He wouldn't even have to be guaranteed a roster spot (as most Day 2 draft choices aren't), and cut be cut with no problem whatsoever if he did act up or become a problem

They would draft 2 QB's in the first four rounds when they have so many other needs? I guess I don't follow the logic on this one.

Let me start off saying that this is extremely Here is my early, early 2006 Cardinals mock draft:

Round 1 : Jay Cutler , QB, Villanova
Villanova? How did none of you guys catch that?
It was the closest thing to being a rational thought in the post. When you're talking about drafting a gun-toting, teenager raping, pot smoking, dirtball like Vick at all, let alone in the 4th, things like not knowing what college Culter goes to is minor.

Did Denny extend his contract, or is this still (as of now) his last year?If this is his last year, I still don't think he is going to wait for talent that has to develop. He wants to win NOW.That precludes taking a QB, regardless of how that affects the franchise long term. I think he either goes for help at RB, TE or on defense.
