My Interview with Randy Moss (1 Viewer)

Chris Yandek

Footballguy
Hey guys. I had the opportunity to interview Randy Moss in a rare conversation discussing his business involvement with a smoothie company Inta Juice, preparing for life after the NFL, why the Oakland Raiders haven't been that good, his legal troubles, his charity work, when he used marijuana during his NFL career, and so much more in a revealing interview with an NFL star.

You can read and listen to the interview at the link below

All feedback is appreciated.

Finally, how many more years do you think you have left and tell me about any other projects that are going on?"I have some things in the making slowly but surely. I don't know how many years I got left in this league man. One thing is for sure man, I am getting myself ready to leave the game."

Good questions. I've read that the juice company is actually doing very well.Interesting quote here:

"That I don't know. Actually it's kind of funny. I would like a Super Bowl as soon as I can get one in the next year or two. Would I like for it to be Oakland? Yeah. Any team I play for I want to win a Super Bowl. If it's not here with Oakland then whatever."
Getting out of Oaktown next year maybe??

Chris,Nice interview. However, I must ask why you didn't pursue the issue with Moss when he said:

"I think the reason that we aren't headed in the right direction is because guys are really tired. We aren't as fresh as we should be going into a game. I think that once we realize that we are playing a football game or we are in a real football game it's really too late because it's really hard to be coming back in this league. Hopefully one thing that will be done after this off week is that guys can freshen their minds up and freshen their bodies up and come back and be serious about what we do."

Is the team tired because they are being overworked in practice? Residual fatigue from training camp? Why would a team play so poorly if they are tired after week 2 of the season?

Personally, his answer to your question was pretty weak and lacked substance. If he is a leader and captain if I'm not mistaken, there has to be a better answer than "we are really tired" as to why the team flat out stinks.

Good interview.

Stop saying uh-huh, mm-hmm, etc all the time. Takes away from the guy trying to answer questions.

Thanks guys. I got some company pictures. I just posted them. Feel free to check them out.

Thanks for the criticims and feedback as always. I will do my best to stop the uh huh's for sure.

Chris

Good job Chris. I would've like to hear you try to get Randy to clarify a little more why he thought the team was tired going in to games, but a great interview otherwise. Randy does get a bad rap...but that's due to his selfish antics he pulled earlier in his career. Probably he will never outgrow that image.

I read this as being tired of a pattern of losing, tired of no confidence in either their offensive production or defensive stoppage, and tired of always being behind in games and trying to come back.

Can someone help me understand how a 20 year old Miami-Dade student has interviewed all of these sports figures?

I have always had a credential to get interviews. My site brings in six figures a month and I have a national radio credential as well. The interview is getting picked up for national radio next week.

I have worked in the media world since I was 15 years old. I have worked in radio, TV, magazines, and newsletters. I worked in pro wrestling for a long time and one newsletter covered both that and sports and that was my way in.

You need the education besides the work experience to show that you are worth the time.

Age aint nothing but a number. If you want something go for it. I celebrate six years this October and over 500 interviews.

Corporate America is turning to the internet and people like me to reach that new audience to sell their books, smoothies, team, movies, etc.

I have a good following. I present myself well. Any other questions?

Yeah what was your wrestling name, Kid Kocky?

Give him a break, there is a difference between cocky and being good about your job. Being sure of yourself helps. Does he have room for improvement? Sure, we all do. Whether you are a car salesman, NFL wide receiver or journalist. I know I am good at my job. I don't shout about it, but will speak up when someone questions why I said what I do.

Same as Chris responding when someone asks why he gets all these interviews at age 20.

Keep up the good job. Sounds like a lot of fun.

I thought this was a well done interview, particularly as it was likely given in large part to promote a business venture (Intajuice). Most celebrity interviews are given, especially to non-traditional media (as opposed to AP, UPI, network television, etc) in exchange for some promotional value.

Chris did a very nice job in allowing the Moss-Intajuice connection to be addressed but then to move on to subjects of broader appeal. He asked some poignant questions and received some very candid responses. I commend Moss on being forthright. Chris must have put Moss at ease for him (Moss) to respond in such manner.

Frankly, how many of you would respond to a widely distributed media that will be documented for years, to questions relating to a failing job performance (the Raiders' offense) which could impact your relationship with management, other workers, etc; a broken relationship (Culpepper-Moss); recreational drug use (marijuana); and aspirations?

Certainly, it would have been interesting to go in further depth on the interview in some questions, but often, there is a threshold in regards to how much can be asked. Also, time was likely limited to five to ten minutes. It is also possible that the questions may have had to be submitted prior to the interview and approved, but I did not get that impression.

I only read the transcript, so can not comment on verbal mannerisms.

If this has been accomplished by a young man barely out of his teens, then I predict a great career ahead for this gentleman. Having the foresight to produce a business model that incorporates both a personal interest and professional aspirations is to be commended.

It is interesting that he started with wrestling. Small ventures do best working in niche markets and then expanding as experience, resources and ability grows.

As to his ability to interview so many celebrity athletes - from what I could ascertain, the interviews all took place in Florida, which provides greater geographic access than North Dakota or other remote markets.

Summary - interesting interview, great subject, flow was a bit erratic but promotional point was addressed and then interview moved on to issues of broader appeal. Very well done.

Your site brings in over 100000 hits a month?

:own3d: Don't hate, guys. Appreciate. Nice work, Chris. Edited to Add: Chris, if you're pulling that kind of exposure, spend a little money on the website. It does look very... unprofessional. Edited AGAIN: OK, I'm starting to take back my "don't hate" comment as I actually look at the site instead of feeling bad for this kid getting bashed. I don't see any advertising on the site - how is it that the "site brings in six figures a month"?? I also see a credibility problem having the "Dancing with the Stars" link above those of (your favorite) professional teams. Unless, of course, you're one of the Stars and I didn't realize it?!?

Chris> One more question:

Do you feel there is conflict of interest in being a journalist and a sports agent?

Is there a reason you choose to use real media as your compressed audio? Seems like mp3 would be easier for you (or just as easy) and more acccesable to your readers.

Benefit of rm is its much harder to redistribute
Given that he has the link to download right on the page he's linking here -- doesn't seem like he has much concern about that, or else he would embed it as streaming audio.

i can promise you that your website does not bring in 6 figures. i deal with the media on a daly basis and they dont make that kind of money unless they are on a big network or syndicated radio. which you my friend are not.

you are a guest on a couple shows in which youd be lucky to make a 1,000 bucks total. and other than that what kind of revenue stream can you have?

credentials are easy to come by and doesnt really mean that much...hell we give media credentials to high school productions (major pro sport)

exactly how does that website make money by the way? it looks like a high school project not what you are pimping it out to be.

unless I'm reading wrong..his comment was ambiguous and he could have meant 6 figures on the hit counter.

very nice interviewyou might want a slightly slicker site design to complement your quality content

I was referring to hits not money people. Six figures means hit wise or visitors.

I wish I made six figures, but I honestly don't. I was talking about traffic. You know hits or views. Man I am sorry if that was interpreted wrong.

RM is smaller file wise. You have to have confidence in what you do, but there is always room for improvement.

I try to keep my format simple. Ben is on my press list I sent out. That helps as well. He emailed me this morning telling me he was using it.

I never have shown my questions before an interview. Randy had no idea what I was going to ask.

I got an interview for the business company. I come to these forums asking for feedback and criticisms. If I thought I was so good, do you think I would be here?

I appreciate the publics feedback and time they take to read and listen to my stuff. RM files open in most media players.

I am not a flashy guy. It's not about me. It's why I try to keep the site simple.

I learned a lot from 15-17 working under an editor at the Miami Herald when I was doing professional wrestling. I made a huge name for myself in that field, but left for better things. It just past three years since I have started covering sports.

I don't make six figures. Lets make that clear again. I was talking about visitors or you guys who visit my site.

I know I am good at what I do, but there is always room for improvement.

Sorry about that mix up.

Chris

Why do YOU only use lower case? Leave the kid alone.

Here is a blog I wrote sometime ago to explain who I really am. I hope this helps some of you understand more of who I am.

Chris

I'd like to make it clear that no one arranges my interviews, media projects, or appearances. It is all done by my efforts and work ethic. Any of you who reads this can do anything they want in this world.

I started with a radio program back in 2000. I got some interviews and showed the work to him and I got a chance to write at 15 years old for the Miami Herald Online Sports Section and later the St. Pete Times Sports Section.

I stuck through it all for those last almost six years continuing to develop contacts and along the way working with almost 20 different media outlets. I worked with some newsletters, magazines, had my own radio program, and again did the newspaper thing.

It doesn't matter if you are white, black, Hispanic, Asian, European, or anything else. It doesn't matter if your friends or parents don't believe in your dreams or not. If you want something bad enough you must go after it first because it's not going to just come to you.

If you stick with something long enough it will pay off, but there are many without the motivation, desire, or expect support before it can happen, but that's not how it always works.

I thank the tons of readers, supporters, and fans who enjoy what I do, but I will make it clear nothing was handed to me. I just go for the interviews I want. I have worked some of the richest, most famous, and fascinating people because I went after the story and knew I was good enough to get those stories and talk to these people.

If you want to make it any aspect of the entertainment world you must have a do or die attitude. At the end of the day it's business. Those who can bring good things to the table will get ahead and those who don't will be left behind

Every week I get emails and instant messages from people in other states and even other countries asking me about the media world, my work, and what they can do to be apart of it.

I never turn anyone away. I am always here to help and listen if needed, but you must choose if this is what you really want. I know one day I will touch young people on a national level. I am glad I have been able to give people tons of work to enjoy over these last six years.

To me that is the greatest gift of all is helping others out and giving them the belief they can be in this field if they want, but it's not easy. My work speaks for itself and has given so many people something to enjoy.

But you must want the dream first and work for it before it can become true. You must try for what you want in life. I believe in all of you who read this.

At the end of the day I am just like you. I just want something in life and that is to entertain and inform the public through what I do. I believe in true love, having faith, and treating everyone with respect as long as you give me that same respect.

Chris,

Good job, not a hater at all. Quality interviews will trump a poor website, but that said, the website is not athestic at all. But here are some suggestions, not just saying your website is not good.

To make it simple, it should be a mixture of white or a mixture of a couple lighter colors. If you want help to change it slightly, send me a PM, I will be happy to help you. It would not take much to change it at all.

As far as the media file, most players do not play real media by default. You should make your file mp3 or wmv if you want to take the most advantage of your audience. I can't listen to the file without installing Real Player, which I refuse to do because Real Player does too much hidden stuff to your computer. You may not have much of a choice with the software you use, but just something to consider for the future.

Just my two cents, from a IT geek. :)

Good job!

Chris,

Thanks for the responses. I was very intriqued by your comment about getting 6 figure hits a month. According to this site, you receive very few visits.

Also, I was hoping you could answer my question regarding conflict of interest of being an unbiased sports reporter and a sports agent at the same time.

Thanks,

JAA

Your website does need some work.

RealPlayer sucks. Many people, including myself, refuse to even install it. The only reason I can listen to it is that I have installed RealAlternative, which lets me use WMP or whatever else to play those .rm files. Any mainstream media should be in a mainstream format, which RP has kind of done a great job of alienating itself from being.

Don't talk over the person you're interviewing. Especially the "yeah, uh-huh, etc...". Makes it painful to listen to, and probably annoying whoever you're talking to. I could deal with it if you added them in after they were done talking, but you repeatedly talked over them in doing so.

Some of the questions you asked sounded way too scripted. Yes, of course you have them prepared, but I especially noticed it with the "but I must ask" with no emotion at all. I mean, that statement implies that you really need to know the answer, but it didn't sound like it. You should play off of who you're talking to a bit more, and maybe let their answers dictate the next question a bit more. The transitions were non-existent for the most part. There was virtually no follow up on any answers he gave you, which plays out like you really didn't care about the answer given.

The other thing I noticed, is that you said "four more" when you were almost done. In the future, I'd stay away from that. Makes you seem worried about him losing interest, and assuring him that it's almost over. Other than the last question, just leave that out. They should know going in about how many questions there will be, and how long it will take, so there aren't any suprises about it.

Some of that probably sounds pretty harsh. But...you're young, and have plenty of time to iron out any kinks.

JAA, help me out. Where do you see that he's a sports agent?

I will start saving my files in mp3. I can do that. You are only given 10 minutes. I was just explaining to Randy it's almost over, but I agree.

I am not a sports agent. Lets make that clear. I have done publicity for people and some management here and there, but it is not full time.

There isn't much time for follow ups when you have 5-10 mins.

Chris
