My life after the passing of my wife - 9+ years later!!! (1 Viewer)

Oncologist saw very little evidence of cancer in the lungs with my latest CT scan.  Didn’t have the radiologists report but he looked at the scan itself.  He was quick to point out he’s not a radiologist but he has an idea of what he’s looking at.  He showed me the comparison between last summers scans and last weeks.  Even I saw the difference when he pointed them out.  MRI of abdomen/pelvis were still clear of evidence of cancer spread.  He’s very pleased with my overall progress with everything: weight, exercise, BP management, how I’m tolerating treatment, etc.  Uttered the term possible complete resolution (i.e. remission).  My jaw hit the floor.  Continuing treatments though, which I’m fine with since I’m not having issues with treatment.

You have been a huge inspiration for many folks CP.  

What are your plans after things calm down a bit? Have you been putting off anything you wanted to do or places to go?

Thanks.  This place is helping keep me honest, which is helping tremendously.

Not sure.  Have some friends I'd like to visit.  I'd like to go to Iceland.  May plan that for next year.

 
Today is the 4 year anniversary of Mrs. Cheeseypoof's passing.  It's been a long tumultuous 4 years for sure that has seemed to have passed in the blink of an eye.  Definitely stuck in a low, but I'll rebound.

Had a treatment today.  Everything still looking positive on the cancer treatment front.

Thanks for all the continued support.  It certainly helps.

I lost my mother to breast cancer when she was but 46, my father would fall at 59 after a long long battle over 5 years. 

This song I am going to post is the only way I know how to get in your shoes for a minute and I have to say it's making me tear up real fast. There's a very descriptive line in the song that say "Let me take some of the punches for you tonight" and this song was written for his father which always hits home for me. 

So CP/My friend let me have some of that cup tonight and let me feel some of those awful vibes with you, I know what it means when you say you're in a low. But guess what, in here you're not low, most think of you highly. I know it hurts, let me channel some of that pain away. 

We are going into a New World and you're coming with us.

It's going to be wonderful summer. 

I'm getting furloughed for 8 days in July, day after Thanksgiving and Presidents day due to state budget shortfalls brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic.  I'm a NJ state employee.  our union negotiated furloughs to avoid layoffs for FY 2020 & 2021.  Will be able to collect unemployment.  They're doing it in July so we'll be available to collect the $600 cares act bonus.  Lessens the impact but will still lose money.

Finally got around to getting my taxes done.  Since my son was done college in 2018, I lost him as a dependent on my taxes.  Still waiting for my tax guy the tell how badly I'll get hit.

Maybe the new digital SLR camera and fishing kayak weren't the best ideas.  Oh well, it's only money!  LOL

 
Yesterday was the 1 year mark since starting treatment for metastatic renal cell carcinoma.  17 rounds of immunotherapy infusions combined with an daily oral chemotherapy pill.  Last surveillance scans in May showed the treatment regimen was effective in reducing the evidence of cancer in my lungs where it returned.  I'm due for new scans in the next couple of weeks, as soon as I get the precert approval from the insurance company.  Based upon how I feel, I have no reason to expect any significant changes since my last scans, but it's still nerve racking waiting.

Should have an update this week.  CT of chest/abdomen/pelvis on Monday, bloodwork on Tuesday and Drs appointment and treatment Wednesday.  Hoping for positive news.  No indications otherwise based upon how I feel.

May be some development in my personal life as well.

To be continued, same bat time, same bat channel!!!

Here is the alluded to update:

CT scan results from Monday 8/24 were essentially similar the the MRI results from May. Insurance company made the Dr switch his order from MRI's with and without contrast of the Abdomen/Pelvis to CT scans with contrast, even though the Dr had concerns over the use of the CT contrast in a patient with diabetes and one kidney and concerns with kidney function (which the contrast can impact).   

Scans showed very little to no evidence of the metastatic disease in the lungs/abdomen/pelvis.  Dr. said if the radiologist had read the scans with out prior knowledge of the existence of cancer, he would not have been able to state the nodules were cancer.  He talked about having achieved remission.  Not a cure (there is no cure for kidney cancer).  I'm continuing my treatment, for now.  Dr. said we could start thinking about stopping the treatment early.  Today was infusion 19, so a little over a year in to the   "Normal" course of treatment of about 2 years.  If we stop treatment, we would continue to monitor closely for re-emergence.  If it does, we restart treatment.

Overall an awesome boost the spirit.

On the personal front:  Started talking to woman about 2.5 weeks ago.  Conversation has been really good.  Met for dinner on Friday.  Went well.  Seems very nice with a good sense of humor.  We have similar takes on a lot of issues.  We'll see where it goes from here, if anywhere, but I'm encouraged.

Aren't insurance companies grand. They have a general MD that appoves these things. No specialist docs. My oncologist had to fight hard to get what I really needed approved. One was iron infusions before chemo. May have saved me from blood transfusions. Another was the neulasta shot that boosts wbc production during chemo.

Today is the five year anniversary of her passing.  It’s so weird.  Seems like  forever ago and yesterday at the same time.  I try to do my best not to dwell on it but I think of her often.

Overall life is good, but would be significantly better if she was still here by my side.

You have a lot of courage, a ton of strength and more heart than the Grinch after his heart grew 3 sizes.

I hope I never have to endure what you have, but reading your story and seeing how you dealt with everything gives me hope that I maybe able to do the same.

Thank you for the kind words.  I wouldn’t wish my experiences on anybody.  Honestly, it’s just life.  No real choice but to roll with the punches and do the best you can.  At least that’s how I see it.  I hope people may be able to apply my examples to their own struggles.

Today’s entry is titled “You can’t make this up”.

Early July 4th, about 2:30am, some dude in a company work vehicle, presumedly drunk, took out my neighbors pickup, my Chevy Cruze and my Nissan Frontier.

He hit my neighbors truck first sending it across the road up a driveway and into a house (easily 100’ of travel).  He then went up the curb and on my lawn for about 20 feet before crashing into the back of my Chevy parked in front of my house.  The impact with the Chevy drove it into the back of my Nissan Frontier.

My son and I slept through all the commotion (our bedrooms are in the rear of the house) and the cops banging on the door.  Lol

Haven't actually seen my Cruze yet.  It was towed somewhere.  Due to the holiday I haven’t had to chance to speak to the police and find out where is was towed.

The impact between my 2 vehicles drove my truck 15 feet from where it was parked.  The rear bumper was bent down.  The rear frame was also bent far enough down and towards the front of the truck that the hitch is now touching the spare tire.  The bed is shifted as well.  The bottom of the bed is touching the base of the cab and the top rail of the bed is about 2 inches away from the cab. 
Had to file an insurance claim for each vehicle.  I assume the 6 year old Cruze (78K miles) is totaled.  Had a friend look at my truck and he thinks it’s 50/50 they total that as well.  Suck, it’s about 4 years old with only 27K miles.  Ugh 

Apparently the dude took off on foot and was subsequently arrested, or so I’ve heard.

Pretty much sums up how my life goes in a nut shell.  Have to laugh to keep from cryin.

Damn, man- sucks!

But glad you and kid are ok. Insurance should take care of all of this, so...new cars? And company car could mean civil suit, if so inclined...for the distress.

Gl, gb- this could end up on the plus side ultimately.

Contemplating a suit.  Not really in my nature but may be worth a few phone calls to explore the possibility, especially if it turns out the driver was under the influence.

True, no injuries is a blessing but man, the aggravation!  Lol

 
Today is round #36 of 36 immunotherapy infusions.  Last one!!  Woohoo!!!

Been in functional remission for over a year.  After today it’s quarterly surveillance scans and blood work.  Not cured as there is no cure, currently.  Praying the remission holds for a long time.  If not, back on the immunotherapy/oral chemo pill regime.

Excited and nervous at the same time.  I’ve lived my life in 3 week increments the past 2 years.  Now it will be 3 month increments.  Lol

Thanks to the FFA for the support these past few years.
