I want to preface this post saying by that I am no Cecil, Bloom or any other expert. I am just a Giants fan who had a great time at practice tonight giving you his observations so take it with a grain of salt. My buddies dad was able to get us VIP passes so we were down on the field which made the experience even better.
Obvious things
David Diehl and Chris Canty are absolute monsters
I would never want to get in Brandon Jacobs way
Now on to practice
I was a little disappointed because I really wanted to get an idea of what the Giant WR situation would look like. Unfortunately, S Smith did not participate in practice so it was a little tough to see. Hixon was definitely the number 1 man from the amount of snaps he was out there for to the number of times they looked his way. S Moss (who is tiny) lined up opposite him with the number 1 squad. Moss made some nice catches but the highlight of the night was a nice 40 yard TD pass from Manning to Hixon. The other thing I was a little bummed about was watching Nicks. He did not seem to get off the line well, jumped 3 times before the snap and was one of the last WRs in. R Barden got a lot more time then Nicks and looked OK. Barden was a big guy and he is not as thin as Plax who they were comparing him to. Nicks seemed to be 6th and never was looked at by any QB. He had no targets (Hixon, Moss, Hagen, Barden, Tyree, Hicks, Biddle, Bodiford is how I would rank them) Biddle dropped 2 passes and my buddy turned to me and said, too bad he wont be here tomorrow. Manningham did not practice either and was smaller then I thought he would be. D Tyree was back on the field and that was nice to see. He did not do much and dropped a pass that was high but catchable.
I was not impressed with D Ware. He turned the wrong way to receive a hand off from Carr and got wrapped up by Tollefson in the end zone for what would have been a safety. He did break off a nice run later in practice. Andre Brown looked pretty decent from what I saw. He also broke off a nice run and picked up 2 guys on a blitz and put them both down (that was actually very impressive). One guy that opened my eyes I had never heard of before (but Im sure you guys have), Allen Patrick from Oklahoma. The guy didnt drop anything out of the backfield and then turned with speed up the field. This happened at least 4-5 times that I can remember. Not sure if they can find a spot for him but I liked him. Bradshaw and Jacobs will be a nice tandem.
Bradshaw, Hixon, Moss and Biddle were the guys practicing kick off returns.
The Defense looked solid. I saw a lot of stuff the safeties were doing. M Johnson and K Phillips may be a nice tandem to have back there. Johnson was a very vocal leader. Phillips tweaked a groin but returned to drills a little later. A Ross and C Webster did not practice. Neither did Osi, Canty, Boley and Bernard. There was a lot of pride when the offense and defense went against each other and the D seemed more excited to stop the offense or make a big play (Chase Blackburn picked off Carr and the place erupted). All the defensive players were rooting for Bruce Johnson who is a rookie from Miami. That was cool to see. All yelling his name 2 or 3 plays in a row when he made nice plays.
M Johnson and M Hedgecock went at each other. That was fun to watch.
Boss seemed to be the number 1 TE guy with Mathews, Vickers and Beckum behind
Not sure I saw much more then that. All in all, I had a great time at the first practice I have ever been to. The VIP passes were great and I hope that I can make this a yearly thing (just have to convince buddys dad to hook me up).
Not sure I can answer any questions but if you have any I will try
