From the Charlotte Observer, courtesy of the blogger, from 6-14:

If the Panthers are to continue to win, their linebackers must be a key. But the position -- worrisome when weakside starter Will Witherspoon left as a free agent and strongside starter Brandon Short was released -- has seen a flood of reinforcements.

Diggs is among them, and the likely starter at weakside linebacker. But he's just part of the story.

"I know we've got a lot more depth than we've had in the past," said middle linebacker Dan Morgan, the key to the unit. "We've got a lot of veteran guys in there that might not know our system yet but have been there and have played and have been productive."

There is second-year player Thomas Davis, the Panthers' 2005 top draft pick. Shuttled between safety and linebacker last season, Davis has started on the strong side (opposite the tight end) during these voluntary workouts.

That's something of a surprise, because in the offseason many observers thought Carolina would use Davis' quickness to replace Witherspoon. Morgan, though, understands the move.

"I think we want to use Thomas more as a rusher, more in (former strong side linebacker) Mark Fields' mold than the 'Spoon mold," Morgan said. "Kind of blitz him a little more."

Diggs, who has started at both outside linebacker slots, brings considerable experience to the weak side. Although not yet 28, he started 62 consecutive games for Green Bay. He was bothered by knee injuries last season, but topped 100 tackles each year from 2002 through '04.

 I picked up Diggs near the end of last year, and it seems he's ahead of Adams for the WLB spot. He isn't even listed on any of the site rankings. Diggs CAN be a 3 down LB, but will he, with Morgan and Thomas at the MLB and SLB spots? Starting WLB's, even if they don't play the nickel usually score decently. Any Panthers homers with insight on Diggs?

Either a typo.....or a writer he doesn't know football.

I'm not a Panthers fan, but I have an opinion on this topic.Diggs has no chance of playing three-downs. Morgan and TD will be the nickle LB's w/o question. Even if either Morgan or TD gets hurt, I would think Keith Adams would replace Diggs on passing downs.

I do agree, however, that Diggs is falling under the radar. He's probably a FA in most leagues, even though he could be in position for one of his patented 80 tackle seasons.

Thanks, WD. He just made the top 60 in my scoring system in 2004, while missing two games. Last year was my first in IDP, and frankly, I don't know what Diggs' role was in GB in 2004. WLB? 2 or 3 down? I'm under the impression he was shuffled around some from SLB and WLB.

As of now, he's my 5th LB (start three) on my rebuild dynasty team, and I'll have to assign him a contract sooner or later. Might make for good trade bait if he has a hot start.

Anyone else? Can he be a top 60?

A Packer fan here, if Diggs can stay healthy he might have a shot at top sixty LB. One of the big frustrations that Green Bay had with him was that he always seem to be injuried or struggling with an injury.

His stats may not always have showed many games missed to injury, but if you follow them like a local from Green Bay (I live less than 30 minutes from Green Bay), it always seemed like he was hurt or struggling with injuries.

Last year he played strong side LB for GB, cannot remember what he played in 2004.

Diggs does have talent, and playing on a Carolina's defense might free him up to make a few more plays than playing in Green Bay. I would agree that Diggs does have talent to be a good LB. Check out these links:

In my last post, I may have been incorrect about what position Diggs had played. If you have an active subscription to Footballguys, go look in the Team Reports in the 2004 archives and you should have your answer. Hope this helps.

I'm fairly certain you're correct about Diggs position the past two years. Last year, former 1st-rounder Robert Thomas played weakside, while Diggs played strongside. The year before, Diggs was the weakside LB while Hannibal Navies played the strongside.

Per KFFL:

Panthers | Adams running ahead of DiggsSat, 24 Jun 2006 22:10:40 -0700Sports Xchange reports Carolina Panthers LB Keith Adams continues to work as the team's first-team weakside linebacker ahead of LB Na'il Diggs.

Umm, the SLB does play across from the TE.

Across...yes.Opposite...no.

I'm guessing it's using a N/S orientation as a reference, as opposed to an E/W.SLB is opposite the TE when looking across the LOS (N is opposite of S).

Yeah, that is my understanding, "opposite side of the line of scrimmage"

I think the dog shot before he aimed. The writer was correct, although we may use different terminology.

Hmmm...wouldnt mind clearing this up. Digg's favorite to start along with TD and Morgan? Keith backs up Diggs, Draft backs up TD and where does Anderson sit then? When Morgan gets hurt then Draft steps in at MLB?

I like Draft to replace Morgan. Anderson to take over for Diggs. What about Seward?
