Name a couple of truly great movies from the last 10 years (1 Viewer)

I've been wracking my brain from a conversation earlier and really can't think of any. There are a lot of good movies out there and plenty of spectacular performances that I can think of, but for the life of me I can't think of anything that really blew me away.

Help me out. Name a movie--no matter the genre--that I can't beat with 5 or maybe even 10 better movies from the 90's.

Capote.

Inglorious Basterds.
Capote I won't even dignify with a response, but I'll gladly name three better Tarantino movies that are also better than Capote.

Reservoir Dogs

Pulp Fiction

Jackie Brown

Although I admit PSH's performance in Capote was spectacular.

But I don't want a showcase for an actor, I want a movie I can't completely demolish with movies from the 90's.

Very good film. But the spectacular performance by Sam Rockwell doesn't carry this past several dozen movies I can think of.

Although, it's a great suggestion because the 90's wasn't great for sci-fi...in a genre-specific thread, you would probably have me.

Inception

The Departed

Sin City

TDFK

40 Year Old Virgin

Also if we're just talking post 90's there's Memento, American Psycho, Gladiator, Bourne Identity, Minority Report, LoTR, etc

Can I take a guess at your age? Early 40's?

No Country For Old Men

There Will Be Blood

I think I agree with you about the 90's, though. I can't think of five better in each director's oeuvre, but I can think of one or two for each.

The Lives of Others

No Country for Old Men

The Diving Bell and Butterfly

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Amelie

Finding Nemo

Inception

The Departed

Sin City

TDFK

40 Year Old Virgin

40, yo!

I love your first three, for reals. Inception and Sin City were so wonderfully original, they truly made me happy. Sin City is probably in my personal Top 10. The Departed was great as well. I'd have trouble naming five that could beat all of those. I'll try though.

40 Year Old Virgin was pretty great from beginning to end, but comedy is so subjective and I don't want to get into whether Dumb and Dumber was better, so I'm going to make an executive decision and leave comedies off the list.

Also, I have no idea what TDFK is.

But let's see if I can beat those first three just with five crime dramas...

Silence of the Lambs

Pulp Fiction

Goodfellas

Shawshank Redemption

LA Confidential

And that's not even counting my personal favorites, Seven and The Usual Suspects.

I really think I might be placing too high a bar here...Bagel, you named some seriously good flicks and I wouldn't put any of them ahead of these flicks.

Also, if those are your best nominees from after 2000, please feel free to include them. Memento is the only one even deserving of being in the conversation.

No Country For Old Men

There Will Be Blood

No Country might might might be in the conversation with the crime dramas I listed, but the lack of closure hurts it quite a bit.

And trust me, I love stories with an ambiguous ending.

Any of the Batman films of late but I'll submit: The Dark Knight

Wall-E, UP or Toy Story 3 (your choice)

Pan's Labyrinth

Gran Torino

Warrior

No Country For Old Men

There Will Be Blood

Maybe I'm forgetting, but I thought everybody died except for Tommy Lee Jones's character. My friend, who is a political philosophy guy, claims -- his words -- that the last scene is not relativistic, nor incomplete, but shows an ability to live and go on with life knowing that true evil exists in the world. I love that last scene. I find a serious examination of the religious impulse that you won't find in most movies.

And also, like tdoss and FreeBagel posted Dark Knight and Sin City can't really be topped genre-wise.

But this is kind of a cool thread. Stump the 90's.

No Country for Old Men

The Departed

Batman Begins - yeah, I know everyone thinks it's not even the best Nolan Batflick, but for me it's an all-time great

I'll submit whatever everyone thinks is the best MCU movie as well: for me, it's The Avengers

All on a footing with the movies I know you love from the 90s.

No Country

Captain Phillips

I actually rewatched Captain last night. The scene where he's getting check out at the end is one of the most powerful scenes in any movie, ever. My chest hurt when I was done watching that scene.

No Country For Old Men

There Will Be Blood

Homie, you fishing here? I know you're smarter than this. It wasn't an ambiguous ending at all. It was an ellipsis.

No Country For Old Men

There Will Be Blood

There Will Be Blood is Daniel Day Lewis overacting to Pacino-esque levels. I thought Gangs of New York was way better. TWBB took itself way too serisously. "Just a ******* in a basket."

Capote.

Inglorious Basterds.

Lots of good suggestions in here already.

I'll watch and listen, since I don't think I could make a case you'd find convincing if you thought Jackie Brown was fit for anything but overhead entertainment on Mexican tour buses.

nice. so the point of this thread is just to disagree with whatever people post and weren't actually asking a serious question? (won't prevent me from playing along)

we get it, you like movies from the 90s.

Top 5:

No Country For Old Men

The Departed

There Will Be Blood

The Secret In Their Eyes

Children Of Men

Downfall

Pan's Labyrinth

The Orphanage

I'll be back with more.

The Incredibles

Spider Man 2

Iron Man

I was thinking of Unforgiven until I found out it was pre-2000 and didn't fit the header.

This is actually a pretty good list for me too

Movies have certainly sucked this year.

Eternal Sunshine, yes yes yes

No Country, yes yes yes

There Will Be Blood, yes yes yes

Silver Linings Playbook is a top ten all timer for me, just great on every level and superb on multiple re-watchings

Mystic River is still a great watch, may be just out of the ten year window though

I thought Zero Dark Thirty was great

Loved The Fighter, thought some of the scenes were amazing

The Departed, Inception, The Dark Knight, The Social Network....I loved Blue Valentine

Sideways may be out of the ten year window, but I'm not drinking any ####### merlot

Step Brothers and Superbad are two of my favorite comedies

ETA: American Gangster :moneybag: :tebow:

Agh, completely forgot Children of Men. Masterpiece.
This. That scene in the battlefield toward the end when all the soldiers suddenly stop fighting was one of the most authentic, emotionally moving scenes in a film in a long time.
