Nanny /babysitter etiquette (1 Viewer)

Instead of paying for before and aftercare for our two kids, we hired a girl to be their nanny/ caretaker.

Her duties include:

1 - Arrive at 6:45 AM

2 - Make the girls breakfast

3 - Make sure they're dressed and ready. (The clothes and laid out the night before so no struggling with finding outfits.)

4 - Drop the girls off at school (.2 miles away)

5 - Pick the girls up from school at 3:30

6- Help them with their homework

7- Off at 5PM

Salary is $250/week.

Questions....

Do we pay her if she's sick?

Do we pay of the kids are on summer spring break?

I know traditional day care providers get paid no matter what so do we extend her the same Courtesy ?

We REALLY enjoy the tax breaks of paying for child care - us there any way to still benifit from that? What would I need to do? Treat her as an employee?

How do I work out the taxes on her end and ours ? I don't want to screw her (financially).

Anything else I need to consider?

As always, that's so much in advance.

Just curious, why did you decide to do this? Reason I am asking is because our son is going into kindergarten and I thought about using a nanny for drop off and pickup similar to you but its just too expensive. Our school offers before and after care for $250 A MONTH and they have a NYS licensed teacher there to do homework with him and he does art and activities with other children. Seemed like a no brainer.

EDIT: Wow and $250 a week is more than I pay my son's current full time day care

My neighborhood they're averaging $15 an hour which I think is high (some ask for $20 :hot: )

I would approach all as negotiable but would want to have it all hammered out prior to her starting. Can't help with the taxes.

Also, :pics: or it's not going to happen.

The biggest reason is the director of the after care program got taken from us and sentry another school and our replacement director sucks.

We also thought they would benefit from more 1 on 1 interaction with the nanny rather then the lax homework time at the schools aftercare program.

 The OP had me intrigued, until I did the math.

I would pay by the hour, not the week. Looks like you have roughly a 10/hr structure. Pay her on hours worked, not flat rate. Makes things simpler.

Give her an extra week's pay at Christmas time if she's proven reliable.

You are going to probably meet some resistance here as you will have to do withholding for her for taxes and other government benefits. It can be quite complicated. If you do take the child care benefit for this and you don't file for her you are going to be a pretty big red flag for an audit. So you better have this settled up-front with her that you are going to do it above board.

The tax breaks for child care are way reduced under Obama. Check to make sure you are still getting what you think you are getting (it isn't much anymore).

How do I work out the taxes on her end and ours ? I don't want to screw her (financially).

You pay her cash for carry, or you file it. Filing it is not that hard, but probably something you want an HRBlock type person to setup for you the first time.

Only way you can work out taxes on your end is take care of them on her end- IIRC, yes- you have to treat her as an employee. If that's something you want to do, check your state's laws regarding sick leave.

We do something similar, but pay cash, hourly (anywhere from 10-15, depending on whether it's our usual nanny or our usual NYU student, who is also great).

We don't pay her if she's sick. We do pay her when we go on vacation and give her a bonus (one or two weeks) at the holidays.

We usually pay $12-$15.

We're paying this girl a salary cause she does more like a load of laundry and makes the kids breakfast , does dishes and homework.

We are paying for the convenience. I get home everyday between 3-4pm. So I can get off, take a shower , go exercise for an hour and then take over . This also allows my wife to leave for work earlier in the morning do she doesn't have to struggle with her commute.

When we had a nanny like this it was the best year ever. I got laid constantly and the wife was happy and the kids were happy.

If you find a good one that is reliable, then keep her.

Go on.

My daughter nannied the last two summers. The lady kinda treated her like #### but the pay was solid for her so she put up with it, made $10/hr for hours worked. No taxes just straight cash homie. Some days she would work 8 hours (or more), some days less than 3 just depended on the mom's schedule. Her schedule was similar to the one you laid out but with the kids being out of skrewel she had to run them all over hell's half acre for camps & workshops, etc.

I've heard of people who own a business and employ the nanny as an employee of that business...

We have a nanny 2-3 says a week. She's great and keeps my wife sane, which in turn makes life better for us all. We pay 15 per hour (standard here), and she gets paid on days we don't use her. If you want to keep a good one you have to remember this is their income and treat it as such. That's common practice around here anyway. If she's sick that's perhaps different but if we cancel on her or go on vacation, she gets paid. Seriously considering taking her on vacation with us next year so wife and I get some time alone on the beach at some point. She's young but not my type I'm any way, which is good with me and I'm sure the wife too (prior one was 25, hot blonde with implants...).

mine is a licensed childcare provider that works out of her home. she is an older lady that lives 2 doors down from us. we were her first client 3 years ago and we only pay $10/hour. she has an EID # that i simply plug into my taxes. no 1099 needed. the tax break aint squat. off the top of my head, it's 3K max. we give her bonuses from time to time, her bday, xmas, when she went on vacation, etc. and we too are considering taking her on vacation if the right opportunity came up.

Does she know about your crippling porn habit?

i had to create a guest wifi just in case for the times that she's at my house.

How much for the little girl? How much for the women?

What?

Your women. I want to buy your women. The little girl, your daughters... sell them to me. Sell me your children!

I pay my nanny $17/hour (2-3 days/week) and I leave it up to her to file her taxes, whether she can legally do so or not is her business. I pay her weekly for hours worked, not PTO for sick days, and I don't think we paid for the days we were on vacation. We'll give her a Christmas bonus assuming she's with us then.

FWIW, $17/hour is on the low end here in Baltimore City for twins under 2. Also, full time day care would be $2000+/month for both.

The median income in the City of Baltimore is less than $50k/household. How can a median household afford $24k/year in day care costs, even with tax breaks? This country is ridiculous when it comes to child care.

You shower before you exercise?

Two of the married partners at my firm got an au pair and it's working out really well.

I almost always shower as soon as I get home from work. Cleanliness is one thing but it refreshes me/wakes me up.

So yes, sometimes I shower after working all day , before exercising. My exercising isn't your hop on the treadmill variety.

Did the wife go back to work part time?

Got a nanny because off my wife's aneurysm. She takes care of two kids and wife. Now that kids are going back to school she'll just have my wife. Her job is to get my wife to do all routine daily activities. This doesn't mean feed or bath her, I mean stuff like laundry, cooking, cleaning etc. She is awsome and I pay her 8 an hour cash. Giving her a raise to 9 next month.

wow- basically minimum wage.

outside of getting young kids (12ish) to do this kind of work, I haven't seen anybody pay that little before- especially for 2 kids and an adult.
