stupid question but how do they know what space smells like?  aren't they just smelling the inside of their spaceship or whatever?

My nose has never touched poop but I know what poop smells like. 

Imagine being in the space station, opening the airlock, and then closing it. Whatever that new smell is, that's what space smells like.

right, but they're not spacewalking without a helmet to sniff outer space.  i guess as fred pointed out, noticing new smells inside of the airlock is basically the idea.
