*NBA THREAD* Abe will be missed (4 Viewers)

if he wants to be the face of a franchise then jersey or the knicks are the winners bet.
He'll be the face of just about any franchise. No way in hell he'll go to Nets or the Knicks. When has the Knicks or Nets won anything?
You are being obtuse. The heart are wade's team. The bulls are jordans team. The celtics belong to bird and russell. The lakers are for kobe, magic, and lou. The knicks have no one since the seventies. The nets have no one ever. The moment lebron joins either team, they are a top the team in the east, assuming he brings bosh. He can be the most popular public figure in the biggest market this side of beijing if he joins the knicks our nets. WHY is that so hard for you to see?
He would be a more popular figure if he wins a championship with the Bulls than if he loses with the Knicks or Nets. And the Bulls give him a better chance to win.
I can't see how everyone can't follow this simple logic.

He would love to follow in Jordan's footsteps just like many players would love to follow Magic/Bird/ etc for the Lakers and Celtics. The argument "a star player like Lebron won't go to Chicago because he'll be following Jordan" is completely and utterly false.
Please provide a source for this. Also, please provide prior examples to support your claim.
Whenever this topic comes up, every source that claims to have inside knowledge of LeBron's thinking will say he is not afraid of the Jordan shadow. I could provide plenty of links but I'm sure you would discount them all. As a prior example, Kobe wanted to be traded to the Bulls.
Did kobe ever get traded to the bulls?
First the Yao argument then this, I honestly don't think you have a full grasp on the NBA and the players.

Jordan will always be the face of the Bulls. Lebron is taking a lot of flak in Cleveland for not winning a championship so far. What do you think will happen to him in Chicago and having to live up to all the titles Jordan won? Lebron has a HUGE ego and wants to maintain a Lebron brand. In Chicago it will always be Jordan's town. Wherever he ends up I could see him signing only a 3 yr deal or a deal with an out clause and signing with the Brooklyn Nets in 3yrs.
People said the same thing about Oscar Robinson many many years ago. This statement won't always hold true.

Mark Heisler keeps talking about the Lakers thinking about trading Lamar Odom to cut costs. He's the only person I've seen mention it, so I'm not putting much stock in it right now.
I think this would be a tough sell he still has 3 years left on a four-year deal worth up to $33 million. I dont think any team would be willing to give anything of value to the lakers especially with all the free agents that are available starting next week.
Heisler is talking straight giveaway (little to no value in return) and then trying to sign a replacement for the mid level exception. It doesn't make much sense to me, but Heisler is convinced Buss wants to slash the payroll for the entire organization in anticipation of the lockout.
He has to find a non guaranteed contract to bring back. That is going to be tough to accomplish, especially one worth 11 million a year.
Not if they dump him on a team who has the cap space who gets left out of the FA bonanza. I think the rumor is bogus though. Lamar is frustrating, but he's an important part of the last 2 championships.
The teams with cap space won't have enough contracts to send to LA to make the trade work.

The nets new owner has indicated an interest in building his team as a global brand like the yankees and man united. He has the money to do so. If lebron brings the bulls a title or two, he will be a very popular athlete as he is now. Ifhe brings a title tr two to the new york market, he will be the king of new york and one of the two or there most popular athletes on the planet. The difference is real.
How many championships has the Bulls won vs the Nets? Hell how many playoff series has the Nets won over the last 20 years? At so what that the Nets owner has money, so does Cuban plus you do know the NBA has a cap, right?Currently the Nets and Knicks are at the bottom tier most poorly run franchises.

Outside of the Jay-Z connection, why do people think he'll go to NJ? Serious question.
Because the Nyets will be moving to Brooklyn in a couple years. They have a billionaire Russian owner who will spend boatloads to win. And they have a couple nice pieces in place.
Brooklyn isn't a major city. Last time I remembered Jordan didn't have any issues making money playing in lowly Chicago, right?

But he didn't so that is a very weak argument.
Why? If he was scared of the Jordan shadow, he wouldn't have had the interest. For evidence on your position, name a player that decided not to sign with the Bulls due to the Jordan shadow.
My position is that the Bulls are not an iconic franchise such as the Celtics or Lakers that players want to play for.
Do you think players view playing for the Bulls as attractive or unattractive? Out of the 30 teams, where would you think Chicago would be ranked?
Top 5 easy. Proven a Lebron type player can reap fortunes there, big city, etc. See Jordan as example.

Robertson, his cousin

The whole Lebron (or insert any type of similar player) would love to play for the Knicks / NY area is really concocted by the media. There's a reason a player of this caliber over the past 30 years has never demanded to play in NYC. It's a horrible, poorly run franchise that's just as poorly run as when Thomas was GM. Some things never change. Hell thanks for them Morey was able to fleece them. The owner/gm honestly felt like McGrady would just snap back and be the player of old and there was no reason at that time to give away players + draft picks for him. They could have given up less if they waited but that's one of a multitude of blunders this franchise makes and will continue to make.

McGrady was just an expiring contract.

3. The knicks paid lip service about mcgrady bouncing back but everyone with a brain knows that trade was about dumping salary.

They could have given up a hell of a lot less if they waited. Typical Knicks.Speaking of the Knicks

While the Hawks hope to keep Johnson in Atlanta, several sources said the Knicks have emerged as his first choice. If they must lose him, the Hawks' preference is to work out a sign-and-trade deal with the Knicks.

But if no players on the Knicks' roster appeal to Atlanta, Johnson, believing he will make up the difference through endorsements and through buying stock shares in Madison Square Garden, is willing to take less money to play with the Knicks, according to sources.

Johnson and Stoudemire emerged as star players while playing for D'Antoni in Phoenix, which is a large part of the reason both players are considering New York so strongly.

NEW YORK -- LeBron James just did the Knicks a favor, a big one. By making them play their most important game on the road, a game set for Thursday in Ohio with The King and his court, James stripped much of the glitz and glamour out of the Knicks' playbook.Donnie Walsh and Mike D'Antoni will have to sell basketball, a program, an honest-to-God plan that has everything to do with winning titles and nothing to do with Donald Trump's money and Chris Rock's mouth.Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh have already committed to making free-agent visits to New York, but James already knows everything he needs to know about the bright lights of Broadway. So the Knicks' roster of New York-centric entertainers and personalities -- much deeper than its roster of ballplayers -- never represented the part of the sales pitch that would make like Mariano Rivera and close the deal.By forcing the Knicks to hop on a plane, James is forcing them to focus on the real issues that will make or break their bid. Those issues include:• Can Walsh acquire the right complementary players around James and, if so, how quickly can he do it?• Is D'Antoni capable of designing and inspiring championship-level defense?• Will Jim Dolan remain more committed to paying the luxury tax than the two most prominent peers he'll be competing against, Chicago's Jerry Reinsdorf and Miami's Micky Arison?

Speculation on Thursday night was that the Bulls might get a second-round pick in return from the Wizards or, according to the same ESPN report, possibly Sacramento. But that hardly matters as moving Kirk Hinrich and his $9 million contract, and dumping their draft pick, would fatten the Bulls' free-agent budget from $20 million to $30 million, nearly enough to pay two max-salary free agents. In Chicago, this news is met with unabashed glee because now we get LeBron James and Chris Bosh.Seriously, anything less and you sense poor Bulls GM Gar Forman will have some significant explaining to do.Too bad because it's a no-lose for the Bulls. And yes, that's even if, horrors, James stays in Cleveland or goes somewhere other than Chicago. Even if he takes Bosh with him. After Bosh, and assuming Dwyane Wade stays put, Joe Johnson is reportedly frothing to come to the Bulls, so much so, according to the Tribune, that he would be willing to sign early. At off guard, Johnson would form a dream backcourt with Derrick Rose. Carlos Boozer would complete that picture nicely.

The Knicks are in a 3 horse race with the Bulls, Nets for Lebron. Donnie Walsh had an opportunity to open a spot for 2 maxes which no other team had available at the time and he made the move. If the Knicks land Lebron then this trade was well worth it on the other hand if the Knicks completly strike out on all free agents then you can say they were fleeced. Lebron has made all the NBA fans crazy, any offseason where you have the ability to add 2 all stars such as Boozer and J. Johnson to your roster would be considered a steal and yet this offseason if that happens for NY, NJ, Miami, or Chicago and the fans would be in utter disgust.

Is this really a question? Of course Dolan will shell out money for luxury tax. He has money to burn.

It is? I grew up in Bk, live in SI now. Brooklyn is not a big city.

Would love the following to happen and would never pull anything past Morey making it happen and sneak in and pull the following off:

Rockets sign & trade for Lebron:

+Aaron brooks

+Trevor ariza

+Jared jeffries (expiring contract)

+2011 first round pick

+new york’s 2012 first round pick

+2012 second round pick

+$3 million cash

Rockets sign & trade for Bosh:

+luis scola

+jordan hill

+shane battier (expiring contract)

+rights to swap 2011 first round picks with new york

+2011 second round pick

+2012 first round pick

+$3 million cash

bring over Sergio Llull from Spain (have his draft rights)

offer all or part of the mid level exemption to brad miller

We’d have a lineup of:

PG – kyle lowry, sergio llull

SG – kevin martin, jermaine taylor, mike harris

SF – lebron james, chase budinger, alexander johnson

PF – chris bosh, patrick patterson, chuck hayes

C – yao ming, brad miller, david andersen Patrick Lee

Rockets might not have quite as strong of a starting 5 versus if Lebron and Bosh went to the Bulls, but it’s close. It’s also deeper than any team that Chicago, Miami, or Knicks could put together since they’ve gutted their teams in order to clear cap space (Llull and Patterson would be very experienced as far as rookies go).

LBJ/Bosh do a sign & trade instead of outright signing with a new team, then they’d earn around $30 million more doing so.

No state tax in Houston = saving a lot of money

Plus with the Yao, they’d end up with a lot more fans and a lot more endorsements from China. resulting in even more money and more worldwide appeal

Financially, they’d probably make more with the rockets than with any other team in the league.

If the Cavs and the Raptors are convinced that LBJ and Bosh are going to sign with other teams, then doing a sign & trade at least gets them back something.

Brooklyn is most populous of 5 boroughs with approx. 2.5 million residents, as a reference Chicago has 2.8 million residents.

I think those are the two major issues why Lebron won't sign with the Knicks. They call tell Lebron they'll be a championship team with him but they'll have to convince him with words because the facts are that their coach hasn't shown to put much into defense and the Knicks hasn't shown that they have an eye for talent.

I think Lebron will sign with the Knicks because he wants to play under the bright lights of the MSG. Im sure his good friend CC Sabathia told how great a championship in NY was. Also with NY the pressure to win a championship right away like in Chicago will be less and Bron will be allowed a honeymoon period of sorts. Lebrons fav teams the Cowboys and Yankees which tells me that Knicks are only logical choice.

Tells me he's a bandwagon. Which means Chicago would be the logical choice of NY, NJ, Chi, Cle.

LeBron's team will play to a packed house each night and be on TNT/ESPN/ABC as many times as any other team. Lights will be bright regardless.

By no means is my analysis scientific. Im just placing my opinions out there, I apologize if I not siding with the media and concluding Lebron to Chicago is a done deal. Also your kidding yourself if you think that winning as a Laker, Celtic, or Knick is the same as winning for the Bulls, Nets, Heat.

Pretty close to this. Bulls owner has ruffled more than a few feathers with former players and coaches. Wade does not want to go back home and play for the hometown Bulls. That speaks volumes.
Or he just prefers the Miami winters..... (like most of us that have relocated from Chicago & never intend on moving back)Chicago is a nice place to visit in the summer time.

I think you should check out the simmon's podcast with Ford who even talked about how silly it is for people to say that Lebron would not go to the Bulls because of Jordan's legacy ad in fact great players love to play for teams that has had a previous iconic player. Players like Shaq and Kobe wanted to play for the Lakers to follow in Magic's footsteps just like KG to the Celts and talked plenty about Lebron and possibly joining the Bulls. You think Kobe wanted to leave the Lakers because that team belonged to Magic? Lebron will be the biggest draw no matter where he goes and if he wants to win then the Nets and Knicks are very down on the list, two teams who hasn't done anything in his lifetime.
One of your many mistakes regarding your NBA knowledge is listening to these two ESPN clowns.

Thursday cannot arrive fast enough. I just want what will be to happen so we can move on.
I have a feeling that this will be dragged out to about July 8th. Lebron will milk it for as long as he cans and then he will either sign a 3 yr deal or a deal with an out option after 3 yrs and he gets to start this circus all over again.

If he wanted to milk it he could have done a 10 city tour. He is meeting with all teams in the same place. And he is making a huge decision. I would take my time as well.

BS Lebron has held the Cavs hostage and playing with that cities emotions for two yrs now. His ego is the size of NY. He loves the attention he gets from this circus type atmosphere.

BS? Like I said, he could have taken a stop at each city and made it more of a media circus than it already is. Teams are visiting him in Ohio. He has every right to make a well thought out decision.

Doesn't mean that he won't make follow up visits to certain cities. Teams are visiting him because of his HUGE EGO. Great player, but he has become a huge drama queen. A bunch of stories are coming out now on Cleve talk radio about him and what a pain in the XXX he has become.

Up to this point the Bulls didn't have the cap space to get a Kobe like player.
They had the cap space in 2000 but no star players would sign with them. But since you didn't mention that I will just conclude that you really don't follow the NBA and its history.
Except that Kobe wanted to be a bull and almost was. The only reason he isn't is because the lakers needed to take Deng back in the sing and trade and Kobe wouldn't play for the bulls without deng essentially.

And I have a feeling other free agents will be visiting cities as well. Lebron has the same amount of ego as other stars, and probably less. he never demanded to be traded, like Kobe Bryant, for example. All the free agents, including Lebron, will take their time with their decisions.

Interesting....

I received this text message a little while ago from a source with knowledge of the Rockets' personnel interests. Daryl is really trying hard to get LeBron. We want him.Yes, that's it. Fairly obvious statement, too. But I figured I would provide as much proof to the matter as I could.LeBron James rumors normally don't phase me. But this is coming from a credible source, and after the ESPN screen shot sparked some discussion, I thought it to be somewhat relevant as well.I also realize that anyone could post a rumor like this and I wish I had more information. Unfortunately, this is the most I've got. But don't label this merely as a ploy to receive attention. I'm not one for that kind of thing. That said, isn't it nice to know that the Rockets are, at the very least, considering making a run at him? The chance that Houston lands James is very, very small. But it comes as no surprise that Morey is considering every possible course of action for this offseason. We'll see how it plays out over the next few weeks.

WAlton, I don't even know where too start

1. I am right about yao.

2. Brooklyn isn't a big city? :lmao:

3. The knicks paid lip service about mcgrady bouncing back but everyone with a brain knows that trade was about dumping salary.
It is? I grew up in Bk, live in SI now. Brooklyn is not a big city.
Brooklyn is most populous of 5 boroughs with approx. 2.5 million residents, as a reference Chicago has 2.8 million residents.
did he mean brooklyn was a populous city? its not a big city on par with chicago, la, boston, philly, or manhattan etcie when people say they work in the city they mean man not bk

The size of a city is not relevant to an NBA team or Lebron the population and market is. The more city residents the more fans that are likely to show up for game and the more advertising opportunities. Lebron could care less if Brooklyn is 100 sq miles or 10,000 sq miles.

Would love the following to happen and would never pull anything past Morey making it happen and sneak in and pull the following off:Rockets sign & trade for Lebron:+Aaron brooks+Trevor ariza+Jared jeffries (expiring contract)+2011 first round pick+new york’s 2012 first round pick+2012 second round pick+$3 million cashRockets sign & trade for Bosh:+luis scola+jordan hill+shane battier (expiring contract)+rights to swap 2011 first round picks with new york+2011 second round pick+2012 first round pick+$3 million cashbring over Sergio Llull from Spain (have his draft rights)offer all or part of the mid level exemption to brad millerWe’d have a lineup of:PG – kyle lowry, sergio llullSG – kevin martin, jermaine taylor, mike harrisSF – lebron james, chase budinger, alexander johnsonPF – chris bosh, patrick patterson, chuck hayesC – yao ming, brad miller, david andersen Patrick Lee
How can this be? Just yesterday were certain that Lebron was headed to Bulls to play under the shadow of Oscar Robinson. Perhaps the Rockets GM saw your two sign and trades offers to get Lebron and Bosh paired with Yao and is working out the deal as we speak.
