Man Simmons hit a grand slam with his grantland article today. About his daughter becoming a sports fan.
:goodposting: Enjoyed that piece as much as any I've read from Simmons in years.
People who are too into sports, invariably, are #######s. If you become fanatical enough, eventually you're going to start engaging in #######-y behavior. Being ####ty to your Dad, ignoring your family to watch a game, yelling stupid things at people at games (or on the internet), it just turns you into a creep. And I'm sure everyone here has been guilty of this at some point. Who throws a full bottle of Gatorade at the wall and storms out of the house and doesn't talk to anyone for the rest of the day? It's not a good quality to have.

Great article. What else drives someone as experienced as that fly cross-country and back? Births, deaths, weddings....

The most impressive thing about Lebron, I think, is that he came into the spotlight at, what... age 15? And he was labeled as a Can't-Miss-Superstar at that age. And he's been a Hasn't-Missed-Superstar, everything that everyone expected and more... the lack of a ring (so far) notwithstanding.

It can't be easy having so many expectations heaped upon you every time you take the floor since your freshman year of high school.

It seems that more often than not in sports, the can't-miss guys do in fact miss.

And other than The Decision, what has he done to make everyone hate him? It isn't like he's out there raping chicks and throwing out homophobic slurs.

That was a poor choice but certainly not a hanging offense.

I don't dislike lebron. I think hate is a strong word, but most issues with him come from outside observers (fans) seeing a person with exceptional talent who doesn't seem to want to challenge that talent. Going to the Knicks or staying at Cleveland would have been a declaration of "I am good enough and confident enough to carry this on my own. Come with me.". Going to Miami was not. Fans want players who want to be the guy, to challenge themselves to see what their talent can do. Lebron has yet to do that. Not to say you have to play Witt four scrubs to make a point, but many fans (myself included) don't want to see a player take the path of least resistance on the way to being a champion.

He brought Cleveland to the finals with a boatload of crap surrounding him. Amazing accomplishment. Good enough to be the bridesmaid, not good enough to win it all. Why beat your head against the wall when you can make life easier for yourself. Hard to blame him for that.

It wasn't just the Decision, it was also the ridiculous crowning ceremony the Heat had to announce the signings. "Not 1, not 2" and "it's gonna be easy" are historically bad quotes. Plus, as much as LeBron is hated now, he was coddled by the media prior to the Decison, being crowned King and anointed an all time great before he winning anything. In fairness to LeBron, he never asked for most of the blow jobs he received as a young player, and he's never been in trouble with the law.

I agree for the most part. And I think anywhere but Miami would have brought different results. He could have even gone to Chicago and I think fans would have been fine with it. And I think bosh coming along made it smell fishy. I think they the combo of Miami being too Hollywood, wade and Riley playing everyone, and little brother bosh paving the way made lebron going to Miami a public relations nightmare. Lebron became the first sports hero who chose to play with his friends instead of wanting to beat them. That's a big deal.

So The Decision and a pep rally? And the pep rally was more them having fun than anything else IMO. I get that he isn't exactly a guy people will love. Personally, I'm ambivalent towards LeBron the person. He hasn't ####ed up like many of the players in NBA so I give him that. The amount of hate/dislike he inspires is just kinda odd to me.

No, but he sure carried himself like a guy that thought he deserved them all and more. I don't actually hate the guy, but he always rubbed me the wrong way - long before The Decision. While I'm not one of the folks that heaps a bunch of ridiculous criticism on him, I do hope he never gets a ring.

He gave Cleveland a chance and they surrounded him with nothing but crap. He choose to go and play with his friends in what I assume is a pretty fun city (never been to Miami). I can tell that I sure as #### wouldn't want to be as rich/popular as him and living in freaking Cleveland. Its a different era. The heated/hated rivalries between players don't exist anymore.

And I don't get the not challenging himself stuff. He has put up some of the best numbers ever in the playoffs. Its damn near impossible to play better than he has. Maybe he was sick of having to do it all and that still not being enough? I don't know what is going on is his head but I believe that is how I would feel.

It is now almost 100% his persona....i love the guy, but he needs a body language coach.

The two biggest LeBron fans I know are my daughters. They have very little interest in the NBA, but they are heavily involved in the Boys and Girls Club and they are aware that this is his main charity effort.

I'll give him that. He appears to do a lot for the boys and girls club.

King James?

"The Chosen One."

Hits FA and teams up with someone who should be one of his biggest rivals.

I get leaving Cleveland. But going to NY was the move. Carmelo/Amare/Chandler. That could have been Lebron and two other guys. Could have been his team. He would not have had to win 5,6,7 titles to cement himself. One title in NY would have grander then anything he can do in Miami. Instead he went to play with a "rival" who already has a ring and did it in a spectacularly poor fashion. Going to Miami to play with Wade is idiotic on every level.

Madison Square Garden was your's and the Knicks could have built a team around him. That is shrinking from the moment.

Not to mention he would be winning titles if he just played on/near the block with his back to the basket. Everyone know's this. He has a slightly above-average jumper. Playing on the perimeter get's the least out of his phyiscal talents. His passing skills would be just as lethal beating double-teams downlow.

The fadeaway on the block. The spin move to the baseline. The spin move to the middle of the key. While killing anoyone who double-teams. His advantages are much greater downlow then on the perimeter. You do everyone a favor handling the ball in front of the entire defense.

Lebron is more frustrating then anything. From his "Decision" to how he plays his game. I wasn't a Bulls fan but watching MJ dominate was amazing. No one is MJ but Lebron is pretty spectacular and we're in year 9 and he's having trouble beating an old ### Celtics team.

I disagree that fans would have been fine with LeBron going to Chicago. Since The Decision still would have happened, "I'm taking my talents to Chi-Town" would still be a rallying cry for the haters. He would have been criticized for going to Chicago to try to be like Jordan instead of creating his own legacy in a new town. And he would have been hammered for going to a team with so much young talent, attaching himself to a team already on the rise with All-Star teammates instead of building a new team from scratch built around him. The only team he could have signed with that the masses would have accepted was the Cavaliers. If he signed with the Knicks he was too good for his hometown and quitting on them to go to the big city. If signed with the Nets he would have been too interested in hanging with Jay-Z and building a brand as the team moved to Brooklyn than winning a title. If he signed with the Clippers he was shirking the spotlight yet again by signing with the second-best team in Kobe's city. Then again, if he re-signed with the Cavaliers, he was ducking the challenge of playing in a major market with major market resources with major market aspirations instead of being content staying in his hometown.Haters gonna hate. Magic and Barkley creamed him for going to Miami, but their hands aren't clean. It's not like LeBron decided to turn pro because being drafted #1 also meant playing with Kareem in LA instead of in Chicago with no surrounding talent, like Magic did when he decided to go hardship into the NBA after seeing who won the #1 pick. LeBron didn't constantly ##### about how bad his teammates were during and after his career like Barkley did; he put them on his back and took them to the 2007 Finals.
Cavs fans were going to be upset no matter what. Average NBA fans probably would've been rubbed the wrong way less if he'd handled it better. Or maybe give the Cavs some notice. But, it's his career. I think he got a lot of bad advice, but I'm not throwing darts at the guy every day.

@AdamSchefter: According to Elias, LeBron James has the highest scoring average in NBA Game 7 history (36.0 pts per game).

Why should Wade have been one of his biggest rivals? If I recall correctly, they never met once in the playoffs. They never had a feud. They should have been rivals because they were two good players? Using that logic, you'd be #####ing about any good player he teamed up with in NY. Team up with Melo? Should have been his rival. Howard? Should have been his rival. Despite LeBron not playing the game you want him to, he is still one of the most dominant players ever.

Yeah, the narrative about James teaming up with a would-be rival instead of wanting to beat him is the stupidest thing ever. James probably wants to win a rash of titles, and how many teams in NBA history have won multiple championships (in a short span of years, with roughly the same lineup) with having only one great player?

Look at the past 30 years alone:

Lakers (Magic, Kareem and Worthy; Shaq and Bryant; Bryant and Gasol)

Celtics (Bird and McHale)

Pistons (Isiah and Dumars)

Bulls (Jordan and Pippen)

Spurs (Duncan and Robinson; Duncan and Parker)

But James is supposed to dominate AND win multiple championships by playing with an otherwise below average Cavs team. And not doing so makes him a bad guy, apparently. It is beyond stupid.

Oh, and before a Lakers fan chirps in about Gasol, he was All-NBA both years the Lakes won titles with him, so don't tell me he wasn't a great player for them those two years they won it all.

That's 72 points in two games, both losses as heavy underdogs: a 50-win 2006 CLE team losing to 64-win DET, and a 45-win 2008 CLE team losing to 66-win BOS.In the 2006 East semis at DET, LeBron scored 27 points on a TS% under .500: 5-for-8 on ones, 11-for-20 on twos, 0-for-4 on threes. CLE lost the game 79-61. That is not a typo. In LeBron's first career Game 7, his led his team for 61 measly points (1), the first step on his journey of shirking in big moments and losing big games.--------------------(1) CLE players not named LeBron shot 9-for-41 (.220) from the floor in that game, with Eric "Smush" Snow 1-for-5 and Donyell "Kwame" Marshall missing all five of his FGAs.
Oof. You may get a call from Snow and Marshall's attorneys for that slander. '06 was the good ole days when the LeBron narrative was that he "made his teammates better". LeBron's gamescore was 15.6 in that game 7, one of his worst efforts of that 13 game postseason. Unfortunately for the Cavs, they ran their offense through LeBron when Larry Hughes was clearly more efficient that night.

If the Heat lose this game at home as 8-point favorites - and LeBron plays poorly - the internet might actually explode.

And the ESPN talking heads will have a lead topic until the NFL regular season kicks off.

Wade already led Miami to a title recently. Joining Wade's team is a lot different then say KG joining Pierce and Allen in Boston. It's not splitting hair's. If you can't led your own franchise to a ring you better well go to a franchise where you can make your own mark. Don't see Miami being that place. Two year's later Miami still debating who the offense should be run through at the end of games.

They just played a little of Doc Rivers' pregame speech. He talked about the legacy of the Celtics, what it means to be a champion, how champions get hit and have to throw punches back.

He is such an inspiring guy. Whenever I listen to him I get excited. I can't imagine how Spoelstra excites anyone.

OK, prediction:

The game goes back and forth the whole way until about 8 minutes left in the 4th quarter. At that point Miami takes control. They will win by a comfortable 10-12 points. LeBron will have a good, not great game. Wade will have a much better game offensively than in the last two games. Pierce and Rondo will play very well. But the key to this game will be Bosh's presence on defense; he will help to neutralize Garnett in the post.

Miami 102, Boston 90.

Miami fans in full effect with the white t-shirts tonight. I hope the team can feed off of it.
:lmao: i would love to hear an interview where a player talks about how flat they were, then they saw all the white t-shirts, or fans swinging colored hand towels, and they all of a sudden got inspired to win the game
