*NBA THREAD* Abe will be missed (2 Viewers)

Kobe Bryant evidently is confident the Los Angeles Lakers will make the playoffs -- and be a factor when they get there.Bryant said in an interview with Sports Illustrated that he is certain the struggling Lakers will make the playoffs. The 15-time All-Star also claimed he has "no fear" of any potential postseason opponent in the competitive Western Conference."It's not a question of if we make the playoffs. We will," Bryant told Sports Illustrated. "And when we get there, I have no fear of anyone -- Oklahoma City, San Antonio, Denver ... whoever. I have zero nervousness about that."
I completely understand why he's the most hated man in the NBA over the last 17 years. But I hope those of you who hate him understand that it's stuff like this that make him so loved by those of us in Purple and Gold.

Actually, I look at it as more talk in a season filled with way too much of it and not enough wins. As a Laker fan, I don't care about what Kobe says as much as what they do on the court. It doesn't make me appreciate him more. Kobe says they're going to make the playoffs? Not surprising. I would be shocked if he said anything to the contrary. Unfortunately, that doesn't add another win to the Lakers' record. Perhaps you look at statements like that as indicators of Kobe's will and desire, which are two key components to his outstanding career and two of Kobe's qualities that any Laker fan has come to respect and appreciate over the years. If so, then I agree with your statement a bit. But as far as him saying things like that, it just seems like more hot air from a team that has provided way too much of it so far this year and probably pisses me off as a Laker fan more than anything else.

As much as i love hating on the Lakers, no one wants to face them round one, dont kid yourself. The Spurs would much much rather face the Jazz or Rockets in round 1 than the Lakers with all those stars. I would actually bet on the Lakers come playoff time if they can sneak in.

No way Dallas has a better chance. SA, OKC or LAC want nothing to do with the Lakers in the first round.
If they make the playoffs it would mean they had posted one of the leagues best records over the final 30 games. Any team that finishes 22 and 8 is going to be an unwanted opponent.

They are tied in the loss column and they have two games left against each other. Having said that Hollinger's playoff odds formula has the Lakers at 32.7 and Dallas at 13.4. Interestingly enough the Warriors' odds are now lower than Houston's. They have Houston at 97.2%. Looks like I'm going to owe Abe $50.

Kobe has shown he can only tread water with this team. Could Howard get his #### together? Yes, and then the Lakers would be that dangerous team. Until then, Dallas has Dirk getting back into form and have played pretty well. they are only half a game behind the lakers too.

You don't think a Laker 22-8 run would be a bit more intimidating that if the 76ers go on a similar run?

I love it because it's Kobe showing extreme confidence at a time in which the ney-sayers are crescendoing. Reminds me of a press conference with Jordan back after the Bulls had lost a couple of road games in a row during a playoff series. He sat there with a bandage on his head smiling, saying that he didn't care about the losses, b/c the other team "still had to come to Chicago".

You love sound bites and posturing? You were expecting him to admit to everyone - especially ticket buyers - that their season is over? Grow up.I think Dallas has a better chance of making the playoffs than LAL.
There's a big difference between no admitting the season is over and what Kobe said. He made a guarantee and basically said he doesn't care if they play OKC in the first round.

Yea, I also remember when those Jordan Bulls teams were 10 seeds at the end of February.

I thought it was the gay slurs, rape, demanding trades for himself and teammates and throwing teammates under the bus that made you guys love him so much. Huh.
The guy's an #######. I've never suggested otherwise. Fortunately, he's an ####### who wins more than anyone else, so I like his tenacity and confidence and what it instills in his teams. I don't care about Walker Kennedy Citizenship Awards.

IF that tickles your purple and gold heart, cool. Whatever. But it seems overkill to get excited because he showed some confidence. While the Spurs and Thunder and Clippers are probably hoping for a team like Utah in round 1, no one is going to sit their starters the last week of the season to tank out of the 1 seed to avoid a matchup with the Kobes.

they are only, what, 4 games behind the current 8 seed? they have every reason to compete for it! but don't act like that in itself - much less bounced in R1 - a tremendous accomplishment.

I'm actually in your corner here. In fact (shameful confession) I kinda don't mind Kobe these days. He's pretty awesome on Twitter. And from a basketball standpoint he's having a remarkable season, especially considering his age and mileage. But whatever he's instilling in his team these days ain't working. They're on their way to the most underachieving season for a sports franchise in our lifetimes. Probably not the best time to be talking about how he brings the intangibles and pushes his team to victory.

The Celtics asked the Nets for MarShon Brooks, Mirza Teletovic, Kris Humphries and two first-round picks in exchange for Paul Pierce, a source told Fred Kerber of the New York Post.

Pierce's name was heavily circulated in trade rumors throughout the past week, but we're starting to see why he wasn't dealt. The Celtics wanted quite a return for the aging swingman and we can understand why the Nets declined the Celtics' asking price. Boston eventually added G Jordan Crawford from the Wizards without giving up anything of real value
:lmao: Quite a haul for Pierce?!? 2 bench fodder + an average overpaid talent in Humphries + 2 1sts?? THAT is overpaying?!?!

So NJ suddenly covets its' 1st round picks? [They had zero reservations giving up the #6 pick in a lost season for Gerald Wallace]

Since when has NJ been concerned about paying aging swingmen? (Neither of whom are or ever will be as good as Pierce) :lmao:

Gotcha.

I agree that the price was not that high, but Teletovic may turn out to be a useful player eventually.

Probably thinking of the Knicks series is 92-93 since Jordan losing 2 in a row was a rarity and they were almost always still tied or ahead in the series when it happened outside of that one. But the Bulls were a 57 win 2 seed that year. Not a 10 seed hoping to back into the playoffs. :lmao:

ESPN Mag has an analytics issue coming up soon, it contains an interesting article about Haralabos. Lot of stuff people here will already know but I thought it was a good read. Meet the World's Top NBA Gambler
Didn't that guy Assani Fisher who posted here say he built a model that beat NBA spreads for three years? Is he the whiz?
I just flipped a coin 15 times and 9 times out of 15 it landed on heads....omg betting on heads(and laying juice) must be so profitable!!!!
early drinking are we?
No, I have not had a drink today. I have, however, made 100% of my living off of professionally gambling the past 9 years.
By betting sports?
I'm down lifetime in sports, but I was able to beat NBA betting using a NBA computer simulation model that took ~3 years to build. I am down overall at sports due to my losses at NFL betting, but much of those losses came from bets where I was betting for fun and not betting because I thought I had a legit edge. I am up lifetime on bets that I made when I was taking sports betting seriously. I've made most of my money from poker.

Ty Lawson is scoring 19.5ppg and 7.2 apg with 50/48/80 shooting percentages (60.5 TS%) so far this year. After a slow start to the season, shooting just over 40% in Oct/Nov/Dec, he is playing at an unbelievable level. Even as they are getting hammered by the Wizards tonight, hes got 19 and 10 going into the fourth. On another note, I reeeeeeeeally hope that McGee is moved in the offseason. He is unbelievably stupid on the court. He ends up being a very productive player because hes so athletic and has surprisingly good hands but defensively he is constantly out of position and making ridiculous plays. It would be my dream that they could use him in a trade that could land them a solid defensive big man that could hit a jumper. I'm not sure how many of those kinds of centers exist though.

Lin only has 6 points but he has played well tonight. He's moving the ball quickly and everyone from delfino to parsons to smith is scoring easy buckets.

Kobe isn't on Jordan's level, these ain't the Bulls, its not a playoff series going back to Chicago and there's no Phil.

Suns should just start the Morris Brothers already. PJ Tucket,Scola,Gortat are dreadful in the frontcourt. At least the Morris Bros. have upside. My other thought is the Wizards need to stop winning. Get one more piece and stay healthy,I think this team will be in the Top 4 in East starting next year. I like this Nene/Okafor frontcourt and Wall/Beal are about as exciting young backcourt duo in the league. Webster's been a nice find and as long as they don't overpay him in the offseason, another nice piece of the puzzle.

Anyone watching the ESPN game between San Antonio and Golden State?I thought San Antonio made a mistake by bringing the house against Curry and leaving Jack wide, as they surely know how deft of a passer Curry is.Then a few seconds later you see why they are the most efficient team in the league as Duncan and Ginobili run a textbook give and go.

It's easy to tell that the Kobe haters don't even watch Laker games. But I guess waiting for a loss so they can copy/paste some stats makes them feel clever.

Nothing like eking out a win at home against a non playoff team. I'm not arguing that the lakers aren't good. I'm arguing that the hole is too big. On, Houston won again. So did golden state.

Wizards look like they need a small forward to reach the next level. Definitely playing better.
That was supposed to be Ariza filling that role but Webster has earned it fair and square and should be rewarded heading into next year.He really has shown he can drain the 3 and can find a spot to get open for a Wall dish and also is a good hustle guy who can rebound if needed.Really has impressed me that last few months and has been a really nice surprise for this team.Rockets better not sleep tonight because the Wiz will give them all they want.

Glad you are enjoying the McGee era. if Karl can't fix him, I'm pretty sure it can't be done.

Against a Portland team that'd lost 6 straight going into the game..Golden State has 4 more home games remaining than the Lakers.Houston has 2 more home games remaining than the Lakers.Lakers are 9-18 on the road. They'd better win in Dallas tomorrow or that's yet another team they'll have to jump over.
