*NBA THREAD* Abe will be missed (1 Viewer)

I've loved zack since he was a knick but he will always be in dopey moments like this.

And it is absolute BS that George was not suspended. Is there a standard or is there not? Total crap

Yes, there's a standard.

“During an altercation, all players not participating in the game must remain in the immediate vicinity of their bench."

Since at the height of the altercation, George could have reached back with his toe and physically tapped on the bench, it seems the standard was upheld. The standard is somewhat different if you punch somebody in the jaw. That must be where the confusion lies.

The standard as I understand it was if you go on the floor you're gone. He also clearly moves toward the altercation on the floor before being restrained.

I saw a knick possible title run go down in flames to that zero tolerance crap so it's particularly irksome

That italicized bit is a direct quote from the rulebook (despite the missing quotation mark at the start), not my interpretation. The Knicks, if memory serves, didn't act very aggressively, but did get out to mid court. There's obviously some leeway on what "immediate vicinity" means, but I don't think it stretches credibility to say George's location qualified, while mid court for the Knicks and Suns didn't. It wasn't about being involved in the fight so much as about proximity to home base.

For the record, I favor keeping George in just to maximize whatever trivial chances there are for "anybody but Miami" to win the title. But I also don't think there was any kind of case for suspending him.

NBA lifelong fan and apologist. Hmph....lemme get this straight. Paul George breaks a no questions asked rule, automatic suspension...but no suspension which protects the higher seeded team. ZBo gets suspended for pushing a guy less hard than the George Hill altercation, suspension which again protects the higher seeded team. Hard hard hard to defend the NBA here IMO.

That being said, great news in both cases for the Heat fan. We need OKC to beat San Antonio-who would probably only lose to a Houston/OKC (if they get past Dallas). It'll be nice to beat down Indiana, AGAIN.

The sideline rule is stupid and should be flexible. Punching someone is not stupid and should not be flexible. I'm good with how they decided both.

when exactly did the rule become stupid? It's A RULE, if they're not going to enforce it, why not change it? How was the George Hill altercation < than Nene or Zbo?

Agree on George (if you're calling it the same exact way it's been called in the past). I personally didn't agree with those past suspensions & don't think George should be.

Randolph should be suspended IMO. It was a punch. http://www.nba.com/video/channels/originals/2014/05/02/randolph-video.nba/index.html

I would be ok with the sideline rule being ammended, I never liked it in the first place. BUT you do have the "no questions asked" "mandatory minimum" in place. And then you have Randolph who, I don't know what the rules on a shove are, but first sight, I would say that was a shove. Call a T and be done with it. That is a very dubious, grey area to call a punch. Could it be? I suppose but its not concrete and if its not concrete you should suspend a guy out of a game 7.

Come on...there are lots and lots and lots of rules that don't get enforced religiously. It's entertainment. Removing one of the entertaining guys in the series from a game because he stepped forward 12 inches is stupid and you know it.

What about removing 2?

Step on a court during an altercation if you're on the bench-no questions asked automatically suspended next game. Except for Paul George for some reason. The spirit of the rule I understand and I totally agree it should be left to interpretation by the league office and George SHOULD play...but it's not supposed to be. It's supposed to be absolute. As posted, ask the Knicks and Suns.

Wanna suspend zbo? ok, fine....Nene was suspended for equal/less. I just think it needs to be consistent. I expected PGeorge not to be suspended honestly b/c of the importance of him to his team and the star power in the series...but then the NBA league office goes and suspends Zach on a play which IMO was < than that McJesus elbow to Lebrons throat in the Charlotte series. You gotta let Zbo play here.

The rule does not say this. It says they can't leave the immediate vicinity of the bench. The Knicks and Suns did. George did not.

I will say that I think the rule is very stupid in how it is written, and I would most definitely like to see some flexibility in how the league chooses to enforce it in cases of players who, like Ewing et al, clearly had no interest in taking part in any altercations.

But the rule as written clearly didn't damn George to automatic suspension.

I feel frustrated that the NBA robbed it's fans of Randolph in game 7.

Yeah, I think that kind of sucks, too. So it goes.

Another exciting ending! Guess I know what I'm doing on Sunday....... Of course, happy for Dirk. Once he retires then I won't give a chit about Dallas. :D
