Don't sleep on Oregon getting a 1 seed.  They are 3 in RPI, 2nd hardest schedule, pac 12 champs in a very good conference this year.  If this was Arizona or UCLA's resume the pundits would have them as a 1 seed.

If Michigan State, North Carolina, and West Virginia all lose tomorrow Oregon has a decent shot at a 1-seed.  If the Ducks win tomorrow, too.

If West Virginia and Oregon both win tomorrow Oregon should be seeded over West Virginia.   Villanova could lose tomorrow as well.  Should be another fun day tomorrow.

Disagree.  West Virginia would have neutral wins over Kansas, Oklahoma and SD State, road wins at Iowa State, Baylor, and Texas Tech, a nice list of good home wins, and no bad losses.

Oregon would have the neutral wins from the conference tournament (Arizona and Utah/Cal), road wins at Utah, Arizona, and USC, a comparable list of good home wins, but those brutal OOC losses at UNLV and Boise State hurt.

Stony Brook had an RPI of 45 coming into tonight's game, but struggled and lost to Vermont, which dropped them to 63, according to rpi forecast.  Their two best wins, from an RPI standpoint, I suppose are a little suspect: Princeton (39) and Hofstra (58).  They dominated their conference, though it is poor.

Still, they look like an intriguing upset pick, as they are led by 3 seniors and a junior, which includes their starting guards.  They have decent size and, more importantly, their big guys look very good on offense around the basket.  They are above average from 3, so overall on offense they seem good enough, though kenpom has them at 121.  Kenpom has them at 25 on defense (though again perhaps inflated by the poor conference).  FT% is not great, so possibly an achilles' heel.
Stony Brook wins the America East.

Jameel Warney (6' 8", 256) scores 43 points.

Seriously was just thinking, wow this guy looks even older.
I think I posted this here already, but during his Senior Day speech last weekend, Ellis joked about playing with Wilt and Manning.  When Clyde Lovellette passed away a couple days ago, I'm sure it was tempting for folks to ask Ellis what it was like playing with him.

#1 overall seed locked up.
Hard to believe this is the same team that had a brutal 2-3 stretch in mid-January.

There was a schism between Ellis/Selden/Mason/Graham and the rest of the roster.  Self did a great job getting that fixed.

Would have liked to see a bit more out of Diallo or Bragg, but apparently Lucas kept outplaying them in practice and earned his spot on the floor.

We've joked a lot about Ellis's age, but I doubt we will see a more experienced 7-man rotation in the Tournament: Lucas and Traylor are fifth-year seniors, Selden, Mason, and Greene are juniors who have been contributing since they were freshmen, Graham is a sophomore who played a lot last year, and of course Ellis was a Phog Allen recruit.

RPI coming into the game was 31 or 32, Lunardi had them as an 11 seed and they have name recognition.  So yes, I would definitely say they have a chance.  Much more than Fresno, obviously.
BracketMatrix had SDSU as an 11-seed this morning, but only one at-large (Michigan) behind them.
Three RPI 100 wins, really tough OOC schedule (Kansas, Little Rock, at Utah, neutral West Virginia), name recognition, but three really bad losses, including a BRUTAL neutral-court loss to San Diego (RPI 302, not a typo, that's a three)

I personally like Virginia and MSU to win it all, but that's my bias. Kansas is probably the team that should win it.

MSU beat Kansas on a neutral court and is a tough matchup.  I like KU's balance and shooting, but they don't have an individual player as good as Denzel Valentine and teams that hit the glass like MSU will give them trouble.  WVU is usually an excellent offensive rebounding team that they just killed KU on the glass when they beat the Jayhawks in Morgantown.

UVA is #1 overall in KenPom and top 10 in KenPom on both sides of the ball.  That's a profile of a title contender.  I have a concern with their slow pace because the relatively low number of possessions could keep an inferior team hanging around and able to undo a lot of defensive grinding with a 2-3 three-pointers in a row, but man they play every facet of the game well.  What weakness do you exploit against UVA?  Do they really have one?

I'd love another shot at Virginia.  We seem to be their Kryptonite in the NCAA tourney...5-0 all-time against them.

All weekend long I've read and heard that Iowa was a lock to make the tournament.  Why?  21-10 and feeble down the stretch.  Bad losses to Illinois and Ohio St.  I don't get the love.

Really?

  • #28 RPI
  • 2 wins v MSU
  • 2 wins v Purdue
  • 2 wins v Michigan
  • 8-8 v Top 100
  • #20 Kenpom
They are an absolute lock.

ETA: I also wouldn't call the Ohio State loss a bad loss. They are #70 kenpom and it was at Ohio State.

Real tough OOC schedule, too.  Neutral losses to Dayton and Notre Dame, road loss at Iowa State, neutral win over Wichita State.  BracketMatrix had them as a 7-seed this morning, probably settle in lower than that but in the field.

ETA: The loss at Penn State was really bad, and losing to Illinois Thursday was even worse.
