Most of the time when RJ gives it up, he's giving it up to Zion for a dunk. When Zion passes, it's generally to a jump shooter.(which duke isn't very good at) So to me, it's not surprising that he registers fewer assists.
This is a good point.  How do you think passing skills can be better quantified?

Hell if I know. Advanced stats aren't my thing. I just know that that the eye test shows that Zion is a very willing and gifted passer while RJ really only does so as a last resort.

RJ is wired to score, score and score some more. It's just the way he was raised

FWIW I was looking at the kenpom assist and turnover rate numbers, not assist/game totals. But I defer to @TLEF316 on this, he's watched far more of Duke than I have.
I was agreeing that all assists aren't equal.  Throwing an alley oop to a 6'8" physical freak is different than a pass to a teammate for a corner 3.  Both are great basketball decisions, but one leads to an assist at a much higher frequency than the other.

That has always bothered me about the assist stat. I have never found a great way to quantify a good pass since it is so dependent on what the other player does with it.

ETA: was asking in general, not Duke specific.

To me there's no clear #1 right now. I see a group of 6 teams (seven if I add a rising Kentucky) that have a shot at winning it all and then there's the rest. I don't see anyone outside of Duke, Virginia, Tennessee, Michigan, Michigan State, Gonzaga and possibly Kentucky winning it this year.

I wasn't crazy about Kansas before they lost Azubuike, but now forget it. Nevada, Texas Tech, Virginia Tech, North Carolina, Maryland, Marquette, Houston, Buffalo, Villianova and a few others are all very good but not complete enough to win 6 in the dance.

Michigan just beat a crazy talented Indiana team. I mean wow Romeo Langford has all the makings of a totally overdrafted guy.

Zion was his usual freak monster self today. Duke just destroyed St John's.

And UNC looking much better than they did last time they played Louisville

That Duke UVA game is going to be awesome. And some funny memes floating around about States 24 total points in that loss. Crazy

Can someone explain to me this NCSU team?  Their last two losses are quite amazing when put up for comparison against each other.  They held VT to 47 points but only scored 24.  Fast forward to the UNC game they score 96 points and still lose by double digits allowing UNC to score 113.

I dont think Duke is going to lose again

until next Saturday night.
Good luck tomorrow Hoos First. I'm hoping for an awesome and injury free game. Won't be surprised if UVA wins at home and won't be shocked if Duke wins with everyone healthy. I do think Duke needs to be able to hit perimeter shots to win though, and they have been up and down (although more down) from the perimeter all year. But that's how I'd defend them, otherwise you let Zion get it in the post and its over.

Holy hell Zion blocked a 3 point shot by Hunter.  Looks like he jumped 12 feet away and about 30 feet in the air.
He is a freak. And the crazy thing, by his standards, this was his worst game all year. And he still had 18/5/5 on 6-8 shooting and 3 steals and 3 blocks. He did have a ton of TOs though.

And If only Duke played true road games in the pre-conference schedule. Can you imagine if they played Elon or Wofford how much better they'd be?  ;)

Oh, and I think White for UNC might be as good (or better) than Little. If anyone can find a way to keep him another year its Roy, but he's playing like a lottery pick. He was HUGE today vs Miami.

With Duke shooting 62% from behind the arc it's amazing Virginia kept it as close as they did

Maybe this is the year for Gonzaga?
They currently have the best offensive efficiency rating of the Kenpom era (2002-present). It’s been unreal to watch. This is actually a stronger year overall for the WCC, but they are destroying every team so far.

They definitely are in the running but so are a good number of other teams.

Hoos, what would be your all-time UVA lineup?
I know you didnt ask me, and I am only like 60% serious, but is it possible to say the top 4 scorers from the 1995 team with sampson?

I mostly just wanted to talk about how awesome of a season that was for the ACC. Maryland, Virginia, UNC, and Wake all finishing tied for first and Duke holding down last place solo?

ETA: best moment from that year.

My biggest problem would be with PG

I'm good with Sampson at C, Brogdon & Junior Buroughs at F, and Curtis Staples at SG. The most frightening thing I've ever seen in college hoops is Staples curling around a screen - that dude was an assassin.

I guess one of the 76,000 Stokes brothers they had at PG?

'95 was a fun year. As a Maryland fan, especially so after the garbage death penalty they got a few years before. Maryland played 3 sophomores and 2 freshmen - Johnny Rhodes, Exree Hipp, Duane Simpkins, Keith Booth, and Joe Smith. Gary coached them wrong, but they were too good not to be good.

I think Bryant Stith is easily on an all-time UVA team with Sampson and Brogdon.  I agree with you about Burrough too and would probably put Harold Deane on there because that was one tough SOB.  But I wouldn't argue with Crotty, Staples, or maybe Joe Harris.

I am trying to find a clip of Joe Smith making an amazing block that he sent into the stands and gets his legs taken out and falls on his back. This ring a bell at all? I might be mixing up players or even years.

Crap. I forgot about Stith. He was great. Could he be my PG? I have to have Staples as SG.And, you're right about Deane, but I'm good with Burroughs & Brogdon alongside Ralph. Wally Walker is another, though he might me before most of y'alls time.

Always remember deane hobbling (with shin splints i think) in the tourney trying to gut it out.

I may have blocked that one out for self-defense, but what I HAVEN'T blocked out is the 1980 ACCT final when Keg Stand Kenny Dennard cut Buck Williams' legs out from under him on the game-winning tip in. No ####### call. Freaking Tobacco Road officials.

Back to reality, Harold Deane was a beast.

My Terps all-time (until I change my mind):

C - Joe Smith

F - Buck Williams

F - Lenny Bias

G - Juan Dixon

G - Walt Williams

For MD, the three automatics for me are Bias, Smith, and Dixon.  I'm not including Buck, John Lucas, or other guys from 70's because I'm old but not quite that old.  Walt Williams probably makes it and I'll go with a personal favorite of mine Keith Booth for the last spot.  But I feel like I should find room for Francis, Blake, and Lonny Baxter somewhere.

Who would you do for GT?  It's hard for me to put the one and dones in there with Marbury and Bosh (Thad Young and Favors too).  The list starts with Mark Price, Kenny Anderson, and Dennis Scott.  Matt Harpring and John Salley are probably the other two but hard to leave off Tom Hammond.  Man it's been a long time since we've had any talent.

Dennis Scott, Mark Price, and Tommy Hammond, for sure. I'd feel pretty good rounding it out with Harpring and Salley.

I have a hard time with one-and-done-ers like Kenny Anderson and Stevie Francis, though both were probably better than the guys I listed.

I'm still pissed Maryland is no longer in the ACC. For a while there the Duke Maryland series was bigger than the Duke UNC series. And Gary Williams got the very best out of his players. Maybe I'm wrong but seems like he rarely got the 5 star guys K, Dean/Roy got, yet he gave Duke and UNC all they could handle.

Duke outscored Louisville 35-10 the last 9+ minutes

It was offensive interference but still a heck of a 2nd half by LSU on the road

Tale of two halves in College Park, the Turtles had a heck of a second half

Sparty with a quality road win @ Wisky
