umaa losing on the road in Happy Valley was awesome as well.

 
Lots of talk recently how the bubble this year is really, really bad.  Combine this with the fact that 3 of the top 5 efficient teams are historically efficient, I wonder how chalky a tournament we're going to get.

The top of one-bid leagues sure seems stronger this year, so I could see 3 and 4 seeds having tougher round one opponents than the 5's and 6's.

Kenpom adjusted efficiency. It was as of last week sometime.  If you took the top 5 efficiency scores of the kenpom era (2002-present), 3 of them are from this season.  Pretty sure it's Duke, Virginia, Gonzaga.  I forgot what team and what years the other 2 were.

Thanks. Was UVA ranked highly last year? I don't follow metrics, so this isn't a trap question.

To me, the year looks pretty normal. If anything, it's well inside the bubble where I think the flab is. Say, potential 3 thru 10 seeds - they  all look the same to my pea brain.

They finished last year second with a 29.53 Efficiency margin.  This year to date, that margin is 35.58.  That's a big difference, but they are still behind Duke.  

So far this year, the teams that will likely make up the top 4 seeds are historically good.   The rest of the top 60 teams tend to be similar to last year's numbers or a bit worse.  

 
A few thoughts:

- I sure hope Zion isn’t seriously injured. That would put a severe damper on the enjoyability factor for the remainder of this college season.

- That’s gotta hurt shoe sales for Nike.  :eek:

- Can you imagine paying $2,500 per ticket and seeing Zion play for about 15 seconds?   :wall:

 
Just like a football player skipping a bowl game why would he play another minute for Duke?  He's the first pick in the draft.... unless he blows out a knee.

That’s rough paying that much for a ticket and Zion out.   Would be such a let down.

Really ugly game, especially for Duke.  They got back into the game and cut it to something like 6 by getting to the hoop.  So they start the 2nd half out by bombing more contested 3’s when they’re shooting 13% from deep and 55% inside the arc.  Strange.

The standard Nike contract covers what happens if a player suffers an injury in Nike shoes, as in how the university should act to do its best to keep that player in Nike shoes, not as in Nike accepting liability.

 
By video, Williamson appears to have a mild MCL sprain. I do not anticipate a major knee ligament tear such as an ACL.

(Those who are used to my video injury analysis in football know I do not purport this to be a diagnosis, as I am not treating or examining Williamson. It is an injury analysis by a former long-time NFL team doctor, much the same way a legal analyst gives an opinion on the Colin Kaepernick collusion settlement even though he was not involved in the case.)

I expect a mild low grade MCL sprain. Williamson will likely miss some time, but I expect him back before the ACC tournament and certainly before March Madness begins.

I know some elite NCAA football players have had large insurance policies in case of devastating injury.  I wonder if Zion has anything like that.

 
As a Duke fan, I'd love to see Zion lace them up again this year.   He's just great for college basketball in general.  That being said, if he decides to just shut it down, I'm fine with it.   As much of a great talent that he is, he's just as much of a great teammate who plays his tail off as much as any superstar I've ever seen in college.   He's gonna make a ton of money throughout his career and I've rooting for him bigly.

For some perspective on just what Roy is doing: Alex O'Connell, Marques Bolden and Javin DeLaurier- the three guys who saw increased playing time and/or usage in Zion's absence- were all higher-ranked recruits than everyone on the UNC roster other than their two freshmen and I think one of them was lower than Seventh Woods. 

Unrelated: Tre Jones is an absolutely incredible defender. Although it didn't look like it last night, Coby White has been UNC's second-best and most important player all season.  Jones had him so shook that Roy benched White for a good chunk of the second half.

Have to imagine an opportunity for a Zion shoe campaign next year.  The extra strength Mt. Zion ZW1.  Reinforced with the strongest substances on earth.  

I'm a Duke fan but honestly would consider telling him to sit if I were close to him or family.

Is Roy following the Jay Wright recruiting model where they're just targeting guys that aren't necessarily top tier guys, but have the characteristics they're looking for in a player and that will stay around for a few years?  

As far as Jones, the guy is a nasty on ball defender.   He needs to work on his offensive game though.   Loved his brother at Duke.   I sure wish he stayed around for another year.

Duke would still be a contender without him too, I think. Not the favorite any more, but I think it just drops them back to roughly equal status with the other 5-6 co-favorites. IIRC when they were the preseason #2 it was based on the perception that Zion was a solid lottery pick talent but also a bit of a mystery, and that Barrett was the top talent in the class. If they can get to the tournament with 5 or fewer losses they're still a 1 seed.

I think it happened out of necessity during the Afro-Am scandal from 2014-17, and maybe also to a lesser extent because there's just not that much top ten talent available since two teams have cornered the market. Two guys they lost to Duke recently show this- Brandon Ingram was a casualty of the scandal, and IIRC they led for Zion most of the way until Duke and Kentucky stepped in.

FWIW they have gotten back to pulling a few lottery type guys here and there now that they're clear of the scandal. Nas Little obviously, plus they're supposedly in the lead for an elite guy in this year's class and another in 2020.

They'll be better than they were last night but between not having enough scorers, poor outside shooting, and lousy interior defense they will get knocked off at some point.  How early just depends on how the matchups shake out.

 
Holy moly - Jim Boeheim struck and killed a man standing on the highway last night. Awful.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Syracuse men’s basketball coach Jim Boeheim struck and killed a man walking outside his vehicle on Interstate 690 around midnight, a source has confirmed for Syracuse.com | The Post-Standard.

The man in his 30s had been in a car with four others near Thompson Road in Syracuse when their vehicle crashed for unknown reasons, said a source familiar with the investigation.

The man at some point got out of his vehicle, the source said.

That’s when Boeheim drove by and struck the pedestrian, the source said.

Boeheim is cooperating with the investigation, the source added.

Syracuse police Chief Kenton Buckner said a news release would be coming shortly.
