Need car advise (1 Viewer)

My company is moving and my travel distance is going to triple. I need to get a new car. I am not sure what is my best option. Looking for something that is real good on gas, will last, and is good in snow. Any advise? I was looking at Sonata's and Altima's, but not sure

From my experience, "real good on gas" and "good in snow" aren't an easy coupling. I love my Forester, and it's an animal in the snow, but the most you're going to get out of it is around 30-33 mpg highway.

Other than the grammar I'd point to the Altima from your choices. Front wheel drive will do well in snow, and in my experience on ice sometimes better than four wheel. After test driving the Altima along with Camry and Accord we chose the Altima and have been pleased with it.

My wife has a 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid that's great on gas...

As far as good in snow?? I drove to Marquette in the U.P. in the middle of probably the worst weather I've ever driven in ... 25 years of driving...

Besides not being able to see 12" in front of me and having to use the rumble strips as indicators as to whether or not I was even on the road, she

handled like a champ!

Front Wheel drive sedan with decent tires = good in snow.
Yeah...AWD is nice, but truthfully, it's more useful in getting up steep slick hills than it is in general flat road handling. Don't get me wrong...it's useful, but AWD doesn't help you stop. Tires do.

FWD w/ snow tires >>> AWD w/ All-season tires

This.

Just bought the wife a 2012 Accord last year at this time.

It's the 3.5L EX-L so it's not great on gas, but it handled awesome all winter long. (We live in South Dakota)

I can't imagine the little 2.4 engine in the Accord would handle much differently in the winter months plus you'll get good mpg's.

I have always been a Ford guy but 1 year in and we love her Accord.

Go with a 4-cylinder engine rather than a 6 if you are worried about MPG.

Choose a front-wheel drive vehicle and put snow tires on it in the winter. Tires are incredibly important. My wife drives an Altima. The new all-season tires I put on it last year were awful in the snow this past winter.

My wife has a new Ford Fusion and loves it. Before that she had an Accord that was not as good on gas and pretty plain looking. Right now she is getting around 32 MPG highway and it was great in the horrible winter we just got through.

I had a 4 cylinder once, but live in an area with a lot of hills and wind. the constant down shifting and RPM spikes drove me crazy.

The difference in gas mileage from a 4 cylinder to a 6 cylinder wasn't that big of a difference maker for me compared to the power you lose. For example. 2014 Honda Accord 4 cy 2.4L gets 24city and 36hwy. 2014 Honda Accord 6 cy 3.5 gets 21 city and 34 hwy. I'm sure there are some better 4 cylinders out there at a 2.0 but then you just don't have any power. For me I will never drop below a V6 again.

Another point to be made here is that many of the smaller 4 cyl's that have good performance utilize turbos. Turbos often produce a pretty sharp torque ramp-up at lower RPM's. This torque ramp-up can cause problems on slick roads as the power can come on as a surge as the turbo spools up.

I just went from a v6 Accord to a 4 cyl CRV. The CRV is better in the snow and has much better gas mileage. I would go with a Honda or Toyota over a Nissan any day.
