My league is an 8-man head to head with the following stat categories for pitchers:

Innings pitched, Wins, Saves, Earned Runs, Home Runs, Walks, Strikeouts & ERA.

Here are my other starting pitchers:

Dan Haren

Roy Halladay

Kelvim Escobar

Carlos Zambrano

Aaron Harang

Felix Hernandez is currently on the waiver wire and I want to pick him up, but I cannot lose any players in another position, so he would have to replace one of my other starting pitchers. My top two candidates are Gorzelanny & Shields (also considered Zambrano, but I think he is back to form).

Shields is a strikeout machine and has very low walk totals per innings pitched, but he plays for a bad team (low wins) and gives up a bunch of HR's and his ERA is poor.

Gorzelanny doesn't get the strikeouts and gives up more walks, but will get more wins and has better ERA & HR numbers.

I think Hernandez is an improvement over both of these guys, but I don't know which to drop.

TIA.

Shields is really a beast if he gets through his bad innings. If you need the K's I'd drop Gorzelanny because he plays for a bad team also. In fact if the Rays had a pen, they probably would be in second place in the AL East.

What stats do you need? You can't look at these guys in a vacuum, look at where you are strong and weak. You know the strengths/weaknesses of each of them - drop the one that you don't need as much.

King Felix should not be a free agent even in an 8 team league. Pick him up immediately!!! As you said, Shields is a strikeout machine. Until his last 2 starts, he's been pretty rock solid. Also, what makes you think Gorzelany will get more wins than Shields when they both play for bad teams? I'd drop Gorzelany.

I am middle of the pack in every starter stat (I am doing very well in saves, though). I really looked deeply into that and there is just nothing I'm deficient in. I know Felix will help in all categories. If it wasn't for Shields giving up all those HR's (16 so far....more than even Zambrano), it would be a no brainer, but Gorzelanny is solid there and in the ERA #'s.I'm about to flip a coin.

While I know the Pirates aren't much better than the D-Rays, I was just thinking about their divisions....Sheilds will have a few of starts against 2 of the best offenses in all of baseball (NYY & BOS) while Gorzelanny will face the very poor NL Central. Strikeouts are only one stat in this league, while the HR's allowed effect 3 categories (HR's, ER's & ERA)I think I've got some good strikeout guys (Haren, Harang & Zambrano). Felix will be fairly equal to Shields, but without the poor ERA performance.I think I'm going to drop Shields. Thanks for the help, fellas.

Just noticed this but it seems kind of odd that your league has categories for both ER and ERA. So if you have a guy who pitches twice in a week and gives up 2 earned runs in 18 innings, you actually would lose to a guy who gives up 1 earned run in 9 innings (based on these 2 categories). What is the rationale behind having earned runs as a category rather than just ERA?

You forgot about the "innings pitched" effect as well. They would still tie.I think it was an effort to even up the pitching with the hitting stat categories as we have 10 hitting stats (R,H,1B,2B,3B,HR,SB,BB,RBI,BA).

tough call, I think Shields and Rays are a better bet, but I like both. Can you trade one?
Your going to need to explain how trading one opens up a spot to pick up felix?BTW I would dump Gorz.

For the love of all that's holy, please don't drop Shields.

Gorzelanny has a lower walk rate.

Gorzelanny has a lower K rate.

Gorzelanny has the same GB/FB rate, roughly.

Gorzelanny's lower HR rate is an aberration. He's only giving up one HR per 17 flyballs, which will correct. In turn, his ERA will rise. Shields' HR/FB rate is slightly unlucky (1 per 7.5), although his BABIP is abnormally low.

You're shooting yourself in the foot if you do this.

 Where were you earlier this week? I'd already dumped Shields. I'm hoping that since there has been a lot of waiver wire action lately that no one will be picking up Shields until he clears waivers tomorrow and I can pick him back up for Gorz. But then again....Felix was sitting out there for a day as well. Maybe everyone thinks they are set at SP.

There is only one vote in your poll to drop Shields :coffee:

My advice is that you put in a waiver claim for Shields.
