Neighbor Question - WWYD? (1 Viewer)

I called, they're gonna send someone over.  It may sound odd but it's not really very uncommon to not physically see this guy outside his house.....I'll go months at a time without actually seeing him out and about.  When he left the garbage can out, I assumed he was just being kinda lazy and maybe he had missed the garbage pickup and was just gonna leave it out for the week, whatever.  Given how little he pays attention to his house that wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility.  But now we're 2 days past that second garbage day.
The smell of a dead, decaying body is quite strong. Did you detect any odor when you knocked on the door?

Nothing.

Honestly if I had to guess, I wonder if he's just not home.  He certainly wouldn't tell anyone if he was going out of town for an extended period of time, and leaving the lights on to make it look like he's home is always a possibility.  Maybe he forgot to bring in the garbage can before he left?

He could also be in the hospital.

Are the garbage cans still out by the road? I think at this point I woulda brought up the cans for him about 7 days ago

Good job calling 911 today and forcing the issue.

Sounds like there's a good chance he's not home, but much better to be safe than sorry.

I'm guessing you have more of a relationship with your neighbors than Tasker does with this neighbor.  He already said he basically never talks to the guy.  Seems like kind of a #### comment.
Definitely a #### comment. I thought it was warranted in this situation. And no I'm not close to my neighbors. More of a hi and bye relationship. Good people, just nothing in common with them.

Officers showed up, no response to the knocking or doorbell.  Did a check of the house and no signs of foul play.  No odor or anything.  Packages have been on his porch since at least August 7, but there's no mail buildup inside his mail slot so their guess is that he stopped mail delivery for a long-term trip.  Interviewed the immediate surrounding neighbors and no one has any contact info for him; all anyone really knows is his name.  One long-time neighbor says that he has ties to NYC/Long Island (he has a definite NYC accent which is out of place here) and thinks it's possible that he may have travelled there.  Same neighbor seems to think a handyman was working on the house around August 9 (Thursday - Friday is garbage day) and may have taken out the garbage.

So we have no resolution  .  Hope he's alright.

Whew.

The mail slot was a good thought... it does suggest he stopped the mail.

Ditto on the thought that the handyman took the trash out - definitely makes sense if his work generated some trash.

Kind of crazy that there's no practical way for anyone to check to see where he is.

Based on the resolution to date and the fact that no one else seems to think it is out of the ordinary for him to ghost the neighborhood for 10+ days, I don't really feel like a #### here.  Not everyone's situation is the same; if it was one of my other neighbors I would've done something about it days ago.  With this guy, it's not really uncommon to not see him.

So this is Otis's vacation home?

Random thoughts...

WIll his grass get long or does a service cut it periodically?

If his house starts to become obviously unoccupied, it runs the risk of attracting the wrong kind of attention - something to be a little more on the lookout for now.

So well worth collecting packages and flyers and the ilk on a daily basis.

I took the packages and took in the garbage can.  I'll monitor for any packages in the coming days until he presumably comes back home.

His front yard is very small and dominated by a giant old tree, so it gets very little sunlight and the grass grows very slowly.  I can tell that it hasn't been mowed because I know how it usually looks, but it's not obvious, per se.  It'll take me like 2-3 minutes (literally) to mow it next time I'm mowing.

Eh..imo

Dont think this fits the mold to warrant it.

Seems more like one of those things someone happens to notice that it may be out of the ordinary and keeps an eye on it and after several days and spelling it out it seems more logical to play it safe.

If he is the 1st one calling after 9 days its not like dozens of other neighbors seemed to notice or do anything either.

Your relationship with your neighbors who fb message you is an entirely apple/oranges situation.

Feel better you nosey *******?

The real weird part of this story is a 75 year old getting that many packages in a couple weeks. How could he just forget about them and not stop delivery like the mail? Sounds fishy, please investigate and update us later.
