The one with the fin on the back and the whistles was fun to throw in the dark, but my favorite was a beat-down, scuffed-up, more-duct tape-than Nerf one that we just kept adding tape to as more and more of the "skin" wore and little chunks started breaking off. That sucker hit like a ton of bricks if you didn't catch it clean.

Pretty sure I wrecked my elbow for life throwing that monstrosity. It was worth it.

Believe it or not, Nerfs can be pretty collectible. Their nostalgic value definitely helps to boost their worth, especially if they have been stored away safely. The Turbo Footballs are one of the more collectible ones to look for, and items in their original packaging tend to sell particularly well. However, keep in mind that just because they are asking that price on eBay doesn't necessarily mean that's what they're really selling for.

I used to have several just like that one in the box. Great footballs I bet my dad still has them in the garage somewhere. Cash those suckers in.

In 1989 Nerf turned the football game on its head with the introduction of the now iconic, helically grooved, black and neon pink Nerf Turbo football. The rifling design paired with the flawlessly balanced weight, and the perfect squish-factor of the ball made even the scrawniest of pre-teens a legit candidate for All-Time QB of the Year.

That same year they slapped 2 plastic, air-flow disrupting add-ons to the side of the ball and called it the Whistler. Two monumental offerings in the same year?! Welcome to the Golden Era of Nerf football.

But Nerf lived fast and hard, and by 1993, you didn’t see the spiral-cut Nerf football anymore. Nope, the innovators at Nerf were too busy with their new design – the Vortex – shrinking the ball to about half its size and adding a bottle rocket tail to it in the pursuit of achieving greater distances. From that point on, the “classic” grooved football as we knew it wouldn’t make a successful return.

I just searched "nerf turbo football" and it looks like there are plenty of knockoffs for like $10. Have you tried a knockoff?

Most asian manufactured goods have nearly identical knockoffs. Be careful buying knockoff Legos for kids though or they may call you out.

I remember leaving my original Nerf ball prior to these bastards outside and it becoming like 10 pounds after it rained.

It was basically I giant sponge

Playing with an original Nerf football in a pool or lake makes your learn to catch with your hands.

Everything else from the 90s is coming back. Let's start a movement!
Pogs had a run in the 90s, my first real introduction to "playing for keeps". The local McDonald's held weekly pog tournaments.
####### pogs.

I remember being in like third grade and bargaining with my mom to get me some pogs in exchange for like ten hours of chore work. I busted my butt and finally got some pogs and a sweet slammer with a skull on it. Took it to school all happy and agreed to play for keeps against the biggest kid in class because I figured I could beat him. First slam or whatever he claims he won and takes all my pogs. I call him a cheater and he head butts me, possibly giving me a concussion. Ten hours of chores, thirty seconds of pog-playing, and a giant goose egg... and all I have to show for it is a slammer with a skull on it.

Good times.

Good times.

I had the exact same one too...I know it's somewhere in my parent's house...they're just shy of hoarders, so I'll probably find it when they die and I have to clean out all their crap. Would love to find it to throw with my kid when he gets older. I remember learning to catch over-the-shoulder with that thing. If you got a good spiral on it, you could throw it a mile...if you didn't, you could throw it about 20 feet. ALL about the tight spiral.

Everything was so much more well made regarding toys back in the day. Go look at a transformer from the 80s compared to one now.

Took em a while but toymakers realized their #### doesnt need to be good quality. Kids just like to open presents.

Funny thing is I read this without seeing who wrote it and my first thought was, "Uh.... thanks a lot for the response, Rick Harrison." Then I saw who posted it. :lmao:

My boys are 11 and 13, and there is nothing that provides more hours of entertainment bang for your buck that $7.99 for a Nerf basketball and hoop. The two of them will play with one of those for hours on the weekend. I'll get in and play 2 on 1 with them (we have house rules to even things out of course, ie, if you try to score on me in the paint, there are no fouls called).

The only annoying thing is that when the cover starts to wear off, we have little Nerf shards all around the house. They don't come off the carpet super easy with the vaccuum once they get into the corner.

We finally had to upgrade to the plexiglass backboard with the metal rim, we went through the Nerf hoops too quickly. But the knockoff brands just don't bounce true like a real Nerf basketball.

This is pretty much 99% of the reason I want to have kids. They better be boys.
