Netflix mulling new model for series release (1 Viewer)

Netflix may be moving to a new, innovative model with respect to how they release their series.  Recently, both Arrested Development and Unbreakable Kimmie Schmidt have released only 1/2 of their series.  Netflix believes this may actually whet viewers appetites as it leaves them wanting more.  Netflix is now considering releasing episodes of their series one at a time on a weekly basis as they believe this would give them a strategic advantage vs. other content providers.

I don't get what strategic advantage they have by making themselves more like traditional TV.  Right now they have diferentiation, which is an advatange.  "Netflix and chill" has entered the lexicon.  Why go against what has made you famous?

There is something to watching weekly. I had never been into the GOT before wife had seen them all; she came up with an idea to watch the whole series weekly so that we will be done by the time the new season comes out next year. So every Saturday nite, we kick the kids out of the great room so we can watch an episode. It has been fun, we are up to the end of season 2, and having fun doing it.

All Netflix cares about is engagement. If their algorithm tells them people will use the service more with weekly releases, they will do it.

Yes, there is a place for that. I believe most people dont think Netflix is that place.

Probably, maybe they could do a couple per week, that way people get the feeling of a 'binge' but they stretch it out to maintain popularity.

I would just wait until they are all released.  I watch in blocks because that’s how my free time comes.

In one sense it would certainly help here... When a new season is released, I have to avoid the thread here until I've completed the entire season. By the time I finish the season, I am so far behind the threads that discussing individual episodes has already been done.

Unfortunately, unlike some here , I have a life that doesn't allow me to "binge watch"  :pokey:

Interesting. I wonder if they're seeing people canceling memberships after bingeing for a month at a time and then renewing it a few months later when theres another show being released?
I've recently been hitting other streaming sites hard.  Hulu and Crackle I've gone through most everything I care about.

Hulu releasing things one episode at a time drives me nuts. My reaction to it is going to be cancelling and picking it back up months later after they have finished releasing things.  I go to streaming sites to binge watch.  Hell, even cable/network shows I let stack up so I can binge watch.  Netflix won't be winning any points from me in doing this.

I have been sucked in a couple times, but for the most part think the binge watching thing far less enjoyable overall.  I find it weird people would cancel this just to sign back on so they could purposely binge a show.

The couple shows I have done it for I can't remember Jack #### about them vs the ones that I have watch weekly had time to let them digest a little.

Not sure how you do that, especially with GoT. I'd watch as many as I could stay awake for.

I like the idea of them filming a season of a show as if it they felt it were going to be binge watched.....as I think that would lend itself for a more coherent story.

A show that would have benefited from binge watching would have been Westworld(S1)....as there was just too much time between episode....thus lending itself too much time to be dissected.

I like having options, so I prefer the entire season comes out at once.  If I feel like watching 1 episode at a time, I can do that.  If I prefer to binge a show, I can do that too.  I don't like when a company tells me how I have to do things.

The good news is, you still have choices.  You can watch it weekly as it comes out, or you can wait until they are all out and binge it.   ;)

If they really want to think about a new innovative model, they should consider selling advertising.  They could stick advertisements for various products into one minute spots at various intervals in the shows. With the extra income, they could even reduce the monthly fee for subscribers. Of course, they would charge more for spots on their more popular shows.

Oh, good lord, no.

Isn't the streaming service cheap enough for all the content you get?

Really?  I think releasing shows one episode per week and paying with ads rather than a monthly subscription is hugely innovative. CAn't imagine why nobody ever thought of that before.

I'm not sure either. Usually by the time we are ready to watch, it's too late for my wife to watch more than one. This has been mostly thru 'Busy Season' for her as a CPA. We will have to see how summer and beyond goes. We may do multiple episodes for some weeks to keep on the track when we aren't able to watch because of trips. (We can watch, just not as nice as on big TV at home!)

I would say 4 episodes for hour long shows (42 mins) and 8 episodes for half hour ones (22mins). That usually all anyone wants to binge in a sitting. Some people push it longer than that but end up wishing they just went to bed after that 4th episode. This will force them to stop and digest the last 3.5 hours of show they watched. Then next week they can do it again with the next 4 episode block and so on till the season ends.

This is like Google saying, "maybe we could make Gmail more like real mail and have it take two days for the message to get there.".
