I have cable inter webs. Currently I am hooked up to a Surfboard 6142 modem then into a linksys e2500 dual band router. I want to add another access point for wireless and wired devices. Can I get any old router or does it also have to be dual band? I will be coming out of the modem into one router then hardwired through the wall too another router.

Wired ap will be providing wifi also? If so get a 5ghz router and one you can put dd-wrt on

I sound like a repeating record in router/AP threads, but I recommend getting DLink's Dir-655. Fantastic unit, well-priced, and will function perfectly as an WAP. I'm almost certain you don't need to worry about whether your AP supports dual-band. You could fire-up and old wireless router and use that, and simply configure it correctly (here's a good guide), but I'd get yourself a half-way decent one, something comparable to whatever you have running now. Also, if you don't mind spending a little money, you can get some wireless routers that are built as APs and will pretty much auto configure once connected to your main router (like this one).
