New concept fantasy league looking for owners (1 Viewer)

Hey all...

Basically, I've played fantasy football for a number of years, and although I still enjoy it, I've been thinking about something new. Therefore, I'm starting a new league with a different concept. The league will do two major things that I think are different from most fantasy leagues:

1) The league will play all the way through to the Super Bowl. The league, if everything goes to form, will have a 32 teams, split into two conferences of 4-team divisions, just like the NFL. The season will last 17 weeks, with each team playing 16 weeks and having a bye week, just like the NFL (there's a pattern here ). 12 teams will make the playoffs, playing down to a Super Bowl matchup that coincides with the Super Bowl in February. How this will occur under a "normal" fantasy league where players you draft may not make the playoffs? That's the catch...this won't be a normal fantasy league.

2) I think the draft is the most exciting time of the fantasy season, and I've spoken to many others who agree with this. The new league will have a draft EVERY week. It will be a randomized draft order for Week 1, followed by a set order (worst record drafts first, with tie-breakers established) for Weeks 2-17. In the playoffs, the higher seeds will get to pick their drafting slot first, followed successively by the lower seeds.

The draft will only be two rounds, snake style. One round you will select a TEAM offense and the other round a TEAM defense, selecting either one first. Both selections will be yours for the upcoming week's games only. A new draft will occur for each week following the same format, including the playoffs. Once you have your TEAM offense and TEAM defense for the week, you'll need to select starters. The team defense will play just like the team defense in an ordinary fantasy league, so there's no thinking there. However, for your team offense, you'll only be allowed to start four players. There will be no restrictions on who you can start...if you want to start 4 WR's, so be it. The kicker counts as one of the 4 starters, should you choose to start him.

Fantasy scoring will be similar to most league, with points awarded for TDs, yardage, etc.

This style of selection will allow the league to play the entire 17 week regular season and playoffs along with the NFL season. I find this highly attractive.

As for the schedule...assuming we fill the league with 32 teams, teams will be assigned a schedule identical to the NFL...play each team in your division twice, each team in another division in your conference once, each team in another division in the other conference once, and two teams in the same slot (divisions will be randomly ordered to determine this before the season) as you from the other two divisions within your conference. In short, I'll randomly assign the 32 owners to an actual NFL team for scheduling purposes. Therefore, if you randomly draw the Eagles, you'd play in the "NFC East" with the other owners who randomly draw the Cowboys, Redskins, and Giants. You would play the same schedule as the Eagles do, playing against the other owners who have drawn the teams the Eagles play.

12 teams will make the playoffs: four division winners and two wild card teams from each conference.

Now to the fees: We can run this league on MFL easily. The league fee is $20. Assuming 32 owners, that's $640, $90 of which will go to pay for the league. That leaves the rest to be paid out to owners. The eight division champs will receive a payout. Each team that wins a playoff game will win a bonus, up through the Super Bowl. I think $20 is the right amount for the first year of a league. There will almost certainly be issues that come up that need to be dealt with, and I like to get owners' input on a lot of issues the first year in order to make the league viable and successful long-term (I founded and was commissioner of a league that is now going into its 10th year).

If you're interested in being part of the this league, or if you have questions, you can email me: jasonbergner@gmail.com.

We already have a few members, and I do think this league will fill up rather quickly. So if you're looking for something new, you might consider this league.

Thanks.

I think this idea is awesome, and I'm already in. Gives a pick'em style weekly game, combined with your normal fantasy game of making the right calls. Hopefully we can fill this thing and make it happen.

Glad to see you're a quality individual as well...a CHIEFS fan!

I'm getting questions about the league, so I'll try and post answers here. If you have other questions, send them my way. My email address is jasonbergner@gmail.com.

Q: How does this league's format make it different than "normal" fantasy football?

I think this format has the potential to be really interesting. One facet of that is the weekly draft and how you won't necessarily preselect the same order of teams every week...it'll depend a great deal on match ups. Since you'll be able to control (to a degree) which players "start" for you in a given week, you won't be stuck with drafting players and then having to start them against tough defenses or finding replacements during their bye weeks.

I think the league will have a completely different focus in this respect. Instead of the traditional drafting players and then looking for hot waiver wire pickups or trades that give a long term advantage for a good portion of the season, the advantage of a great selection will only last for one week. I think this eliminates a lot of the "luck" factor of normal fantasy sports, as players can't rely on a flier on a late selection blossoming into a top player, and seasons won't be crippled by a rash of injuries. Owners will have to make decisions about player "rankings" every week, and those rankings will shift from week to week based on a number of factors.

Q: How will you get 32 owners to do a weekly draft? My league has a hard time getting 12 people together once a year!

I don't think a live draft is practical for 17 weeks plus the playoffs. My plan is to create an Excel file of the 64 choices (32 offenses, 32 defenses) and email each of you a copy. For a given week, you can simply rank your choices and send me the file. These will be due by mid-week. I'll merge each owner's picks into a single file and manually conduct the draft. When it's your turn in round 1, you'll get the highest pick on your board. In round 2, you'll get the highest pick of the side you didn't pick in round 1. For instance, if you pick an offense in round 1, you'll get your highest rated defense in round 2, and vice versa. I'm not sure how quickly I can get that done, and I may need them earlier than normal for weeks that have early games (i.e., Thursday).

That's it for now. If you have other questions, let me know.

I'm definitely interested. How can I join?

Nevermind - I just saw your email address in the top post. You have email.

Cmon guys, try something new, something different than the typical league.

Just out of curiousity, another good question for you -- what happens if an owner doesn't submit his ranked list, or then doesn't submit their players from their chosen team?
