New Developments in 1989 Jacob Wetterling Abduction (1 Viewer)

Huge news but very sad. Jacob Wetterling's remains have been found. This case captured the hearts of Minnesotans since 1989. I'm happy for closure for the family and everyone affected.

Through the efforts of his parents, mainly Patty Wetterling, MInnesota became the first state to add a public sex offender registry, which later expanded nationwide and lead to Megan's Law.

Any idea where they found him? Was 13 and lived 6 miles from where he was abducted. They did a pretty thorough search of Stearns County so I'm surprised nothing turned up at the time.

story

Twenty-seven years ago, Danny Heinrich was living in Paynesville, Minn., about 30 miles southwest of St. Joseph. The city had suffered a string of attacks on young boys — a husky white man, his face obscured, who would approach and sometimes grope groups of kids on bikes. His voice was raspy, the boys told Paynesville authorities, and he often made threats. The kids dubbed the menace "Chester the Molester."

In early 1989, nine months before Jacob's disappearance, a 12-year-old Cold Spring boy was kidnapped and sexually assaulted by a man who then released him with the warning "not to look back or he would be shot."

Ugh, just read Heinrich's description of the boy's final moments and makes me absolutely sick to my stomach.  Lock this guy up and throw away the key.

Totally agree. I stopped posting because it seems nobody is interested. Five posts. Or maybe there's just not much to say when such inhumane, heinous acts are committed.

I vaguely remember this case - very sad - a parents worst nightmare, cannot imagine.  I hope this can bring some semblance of closure for their family.

weird how little attention this has gotten. this was such a major story back then. changed the way people raised their kids for sure.

Man, it's such a fine #####ng line on what freedom/indepence  you can allow your children.  You want them to grow up & learn life without too much interference after a certain age, but where do you draw "that" line?  You always see the afflicted families saying "I never thought it could happen to us", but evil always finds a way.  As a parent, it is truly terrifying...when can you trust, & who can you trust?  Situations like this is why I can honestly say I find it unfathomable to believe in God, even though I wish I could.  We can't face this variant of "human" nature on our own "moral" plane, & no matter how hard we try, such deviancy will always persevere.  God Dammit.  And no, don't think "T&P" help any family that experience this.

Been avoiding all coverage of this for this exact reason. I in no way want to hear anything about what this ####### did to that poor kid. Ugh

Adam Walsh in 1981 also changed the way a lot of people raised their kids. I grew up in the same city Hollywood, FL, same age as Adam when it happened.

So horrible. It's been difficult watching the coverage and hearing the details. My heart goes out to the Wetterlings. I could not imagine...  :(

Heartbreaking story.  Living in MN, this story never really left the general awareness, whether it was because of Patti working on efforts to prevent this from happening to others, running for office, or occasional breaks in the case or new leads.

It kills me this guy had matching shoes and tires to prints found at the scene, but it wasn't conclusive enough to arrest or convict him at the time. All of the close misses over the years to nab this guy.  So sad.

this story is terrible.

I grew up in CA and moved to NY for college/adulthood.

I wasn't aware of this case- or at least, it didn't sink in deeply to continue to resonate years later. we had Polly Klaas in CA- taken from her own house at knife-point.. likewise, changed how people raised their kids.

just horrible, the whole thing.

I was around the same age living in Minnesota when this happened, and even ended up in a class at the U of M with a girl with the last name Wetterling who always wore a Jacob's Hope button.  This story never left anyone who was around at that time.  I am glad the family finally has their answers, awful as they may be.  And yes, hopefully this guy doesn't make it long in prison.

Been looking at Jacob's innocent face for over 20 years in post offices & courthouses.  Glad it's over.  The perp won't last long in prison.  Messing with kid's is #1 on a convict's list of No No's.
