*** New England Patriot Offseason (2007) *** (1 Viewer)

I haven't the foggiest idea what the Pats plan to do today.

If they wanted Zak DeOssie, they may have waited a bit too long. He is LBer that fits the system...ie, he has the size they like, the motor, the football intellect and the genes to boot. I have been pimping him on this board for weeks as I was confident he would have been a first day pick. I still see him going early in the 4th and only wish the Pats could grab him.

I also wouldn't be against them taking one of the RB values left, whether it be Bush or Pitman, although DB Tanard Jackson and LB Brandon Siler represent nice value.

With the amount of picks the Pats have today if there's anyone they covet they can obtain him. I agree about RB. I'd like to see one more set of legs added to the mix. Word is they were sniffing around Chris Brown this week so it will be interesting to see what happens today.

One thing I found very interesting from Mike Mayock. Inbetween picks #24 and #28 he was talking about David Harris (who a lot of us liked, myself included). He said that NFL front offices in general do not like drafting LBs in the first round unless they can play three downs. Harris is seen as a run-stuffer who will not be a three down guy. That could be a big reason why the Pats passed on him and why he slipped a lot further than many of us thought he would.

The Pats first day of the draft has netted them Merriwether, San Fran's #1 and Randy Moss, Wes Welker and Oakland's #3 next year. That's about as well as you're gonna do as far as improving today and tomorrow.

Any word on the money/years of Moss' contract restructure?

ADD - Mort saying Moss ran a 4.29 40 last week. Swwweeeeeeeeeet.

 I mean, the offense is now downright scary. I would like to see some DB help today...see if they can pluck another Samuel in the 4th round.

Kareem Brown DL - U Miami

11.5 sacks in 2006

Round 4.

nice pick, imo.
Kareem Brown Height: 6-4 | Weight: 290 | 40-Time: 5.40

Strengths:

Has excellent size and a big frame with long arms...Good strength...Stout and can hold his ground at the point...Athletic and quick with a burst...Is able to penetrate and collapse the pocket...Playmaker who shows glimpses of greatness...Effective against both the pass and run...Had a great final campaign...Has a lot of upside.

Weaknesses:

Does not play with great leverage...Has a ways to go in terms of technique...Has an inconsistent motor...Instincts and awareness are question marks...Has trouble disengaging from blocks...Doesn't have a lot of starting experience...His pass rush repertoire is limited...An underachiever who doesn't always play up to his ability.

Notes:

Was used in a rotation for most of his career but really came on as a senior when he was given an expanded role...Intriguing prospect who has not yet reached his full potential but has everything you look for physically...Boom or bust type who is still improving and was pretty productive whenever he was given an opportunity.

Anybody know where Brown was projected to go in the draft?

from Boston.com

Trade confirmedThe Patriots have confirmed the acquisition of Randy Moss. Here is the press release:The New England Patriots acquired veteran wide receiver Randy Moss from the Oakland Raiders in exchange for a fourth-round selection in the 2007 NFL Draft (110th overall). New England acquired the 110th overall selection from the San Francisco 49ers on April 28 along with the 49ers' 2008 first-round selection in exchange for a 2007 first-round selection (28th overall - T Joe Staley). Moss, 30, is a veteran of nine NFL seasons with the Minnesota Vikings (1998-2004) and Oakland Raiders (2005-06). The 6-foot-4-inch, 210-pound wide receiver has played in 138 career games with 132 starts and has caught 676 passes for 10,700 yards (15.8 avg.) and 101 touchdowns. Moss is one of seven players in NFL history to record more than 100 receiving touchdowns and is one of 27 players in league annals to record more than 10,000 receiving yards. His 101 career receiving touchdowns rank fifth on the NFL’s all-time list, his 10,700 career receiving yards rank 21st and his 676 career receptions rank 29th. Moss has recorded seven seasons with 1,000 or more receiving yards and has caught 10 or more touchdown passes in six seasons. The Marshall product is the only player in NFL history to record 1,000 or more receiving yards in each of his first six NFL seasons.Moss was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the first round (21st overall) of the 1998 NFL Draft. He was traded to the Raiders on March 2, 2005 in exchange for linebacker Napoleon Harris, a first-round pick in the 2005 NFL Draft (7th overall) and a seventh-round pick in the 2005 NFL Draft. The West Virginia native was named to the Associated Press All-Pro Team following the 1998, 2000 and 2003 seasons and has earned five career Pro Bowl selections (1998, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003).

Let's see:

I was just looking at the Picks for today, and how they were used.

4 110 - Pick Traded for Randy Moss

4 127 - DT Kareem Brown

5 171 - Compensatory Pick...must use!

6 180

6 202

6 208 - Compensatory Pick...must use!

6 209 - Compensatory Pick...must use!

7 211

7 247 - Compensatory Pick...must use!

so does that mean the Pats try to trade off 180, 202, 211?

I sort of wish the Pats had drafted DT Ryan McBean at 127. Many were making it sound like he would be a good value pick.

I noticed that S John Wendling is still available...the Pats were interested in him earlier...is it a moot point now with S Meriweather now in the fold?

I think it does mean this, yes. I doubt the Pats come awaywith 8 draftees today. I think they probably try to package those three picks to get another pick in the 5th round to grab a player they like. Also, just want to say I continue to be excited by this offseason. First free agency, now Merriweather, Moss, and 2 future picks. :excited:

Love Google:A nice-sized athlete with natural strength, Oldenburg is a developmental prospect who must improve his mechanics to have any shot in the NFL. Biography: Former tight end who’s started the past three years at both guard and tackle. Previous All-Conference selection. Pos: Good-sized blocker with nice strength at the point of attack. Quickly gets into blocks, stays square and is large enough to engulf opponents. Jolts defenders at the point, moves them off the line or easily knocks them from their angle of attack. Keeps his feet moving throughout the action and effectively uses angles. Neg: Lacks solid fundamentals, struggles in space and shows limited ability blocking in motion. Does too much leaning on opponents and tends to play tall. NFL | Oldenburg works out at Pro DaySat, 28 Apr 2007 04:09:40 -0700Gil Brandt, of NFL.com, reports Colorado State OT Clint Oldenburg measured a height of 6-foot-5 1/8 and a weight of 300 pounds at his Pro Day. He ran the 40-yard dash in 5.26 seconds and 5.29 seconds, the short shuttle in 4.74 seconds and the three-cone drill in 8.19 seconds. He measured a 30-inch vertical jump and an 8-foot-5 broad jump.2006 (Senior): Named to the preseason all-MWC second team by Athlon Sports and Lindy's. 2005 (Junior): Started in all 12 games on the offensive line...named to the ESPN The Magazine academic all-district team...named to Academic All-Conference team...honorable mention all-conference. 2004 (Sophomore): Did not play against BYU due to neck strain...started on the offensive line in 10 games. 2003 (Freshman): Played as a reserve at tight end for the Rams. 2002: Redshirted. Campbell County: All-state selection as a defensive end and tight end...picked to play in the Shrine all-star game...received the Milward Simpson Award given to Wyoming's top high school athlete in 2002...three-sport athlete who earned state and regional honors in two...placed second in the state in the discus in track as a junior...a finalist for the Wyoming National Football Foundation College Hall of Fame Award...two-time all-state and three-time all-conference choice. Personal: Born Sept. 9, 1983 in Sheridan, Wyo...son of Steve Oldenburg and Gail Sherman...has one brother...full name: Clint Steven Oldenburg...majoring in technical journalism.

Exactly. People may criticize them coming away with only one pick, but the true story is what they really got from the draft and picks, and they got a lot. Max value out of that #28? Not the best I've ever seen, but I didn't like what was on the board. All the good secondary and LB talent was gone. Why waste the pick? Trade it, and SF was probably the best value they could get. Apparantly they didn't like DeOssie as much as others. I felth they had enough left to package late to move up and get him. I didn't think he's last until they picked. With Brown and 11.5 sacks, that's impressive, but I can't say I know the guy. The CSU guy they just took same thing. A mountain from the mountains. They develop OL's wonderfully, so it'll likely be solid.

The productive offseason continues.

I thought they would take OLB Rufus Alexander...He wont be available the next time they pick.
Yep, he was taken at 6.02 by Denver. At 6'0, 228 isn't he a bit small for NE anyway, though?Looks like they took Justin Rogers ILB from SMU.ETA: 6'4, 250...that's a Patriot LB.

6 180 New England (from Arizona) Rogers, Justin OLB 6-4 265 Southern Methodist

NFL Draft Scouting Report

May project to 4-3 DE, but would need to bulk up ... May also project to 3-4 OLB, but is a bit stiff in the hips ... Decent pass rusher ... Plays hard ... Second team all-Conference USA selection in 2005, after recording 10.5 tackles for loss, seven sacks and a forced fumble ... Blocked a kick versus TCU as a Junior ... Productive tackler against the run ... recorded 10 tackles, three tackles for loss, two sacks, a forced fumble and a pass breakup against Rice in the final game of the year ... Great work ethic ... Has been compared to Aaron Schobel ... Suffered a potentially serious neck injury in October 2006, but fortunately it was not as serious as it looked initially ... Weighed 198 as a freshman, but has worked hard to improve his strength since then ... Ran a forty of between a 4.72 and 4.80 at his Pro Day as well as a 4.28 short shuttle and 7.32 three-cone ... Also recorded a 34-inch vertical, 9'8" broad jump and 18 bench reps ... Recorded 1 1/2 sacks in the Texas vs. the Nation All-Star Challenge ... Current weight is 252

You are probably right...I can only go by what I read, and I was looking at the list of players that were slipping. Alexander was listed as #8th overall for OLB, so I thought it would be good value for the Pats.

Line of scrimmage, line of scrimmage, line of scrimmage.

Once again, the Belichick Patriots stay true to form and select at least 2 LOS players with their first four picks. They do it every year.

Love Boston.com's coverage about the Pats and who they are picking...this tidbit was on the site...

Neat story pointed out to us on fifth-round pick Clint Oldenburg by an emailer, Brian from Scituate.

Oldenburg's brother, Lee, had recently written into the Patriots' official website, asking if the team might consider drafting his brother. The email was printed in a mailbag on Patriots.com. Lee Oldenburg said he was a big Patriots fan.

28 202 New England Richardson, Mike CB 5-11 189 Notre Dame

Hard-working on the field, Richardson offers possibilities as a dime back in a zone system.

Biography:

Full-time starter the past two seasons who totaled 55/4/5 as a senior after 66/3/7 during his junior campaign.

Pos:

Nice-sized corner who is best facing the action. Fluid transitioning with opponents, reads the receivers’ eyes and gets his head back around to make a play on the ball. Alert and works well with safeties. Possesses a closing burst of speed.

Neg:

Struggles in man situations with his back to the ball, and will lose assignments altogether. Tends to side-shuffle rather than backpedal.

Here's what I read from this description: Talented, but needs good coaching and is inconsistent. Better as a backup in a rotation than as a starter or every down player.

In other words, he sounds like the kind of guy they're looking for on the D line.

New England gets 2 in a row (compensatory), 208 and 209

208 - Justise Hairston - RB - Central Connecticut - 6'2" 220

209 - Corey Hilliard G - Oklahoma State

Guess the reports were right about the Pats liking him:

34 208 New England (Compensatory Selection) Hairston, Justise RB 6-2 220 Central Connecticut

Strengths:

Has excellent size and bulk...Strong and powerful runner...Is instinctive with nice vision...A patient runner...Solid blocker...Tough and physical...Coming off a great senior campaign...Athletic with some elusiveness and moves...He still has upside.

Weaknesses:

Timed speed is just average at best...Isn't real explosive and lacks a burst...Runs too tall...Not a great receiver...May not be able to turn the corner and get outside in the NFL...Did not really break out until he was facing inferior competition in '06.

Notes:

Played the first three years of his career at Rutgers but transferred down a level for his senior season when he was going to be stuck behind Ray Rice and Brian Leonard...Intriguing prospect who you can't really blame for his lack of production with the Scarlet Knights considering the talent that was in front of him...A sleeper who could be a late round pick...Potentially a very pleasant surprise for someone.

35 209 New England (Compensatory Selection) Hilliard, Corey OT 6-5 318 Oklahoma State

Strengths:

Size is adequate...Really strong and powerful...Stout at the point of attack...Has decent feet...Smart and aware...Versatile...Tough and competitive...A hard worker with good intangibles...Brings a nasty demeanor to the field...Lots of experience.

Weaknesses:

Isn't overly athletic...Lacks quickness and great mobility...Struggles in space...Has trouble with speed off the edge,..His balance is pretty shaky and he will lunge at times...Can be overaggressive...Won't be able to play left tackle at the pro level.

Notes:

Was a four-year starter at both left and right tackle...Is the type who might not have everything you look for physically but he is able to make up for it by doing the little things...Right tackle or maybe even guard...Profiles as more of a backup

1 211 New England (from Oakland) Lua, Oscar ILB 6-0 238 Southern California

Inside Linebacker | Senior | USC Oscar Lua

Height: 6-01/8 | Weight: 236 | 40-Time: 4.85

Strengths:

Decent bulk...Has outstanding instincts...Is always around the action...Diagnoses quickly...Tough...Hard worker and the football equivalent of a gym rat...Loves the game...Intense and motor runs non-stop...Solid tackler...Special teams potential.

Weaknesses:

Timed speed and quickness are below average and lacks a burst...Shorter than you'd prefer...Is not a great athlete...Sub par range...Liability in coverage...Poor agility and change of direction..Durability's a concern...Doesn't have a big upside.

Notes:

Finally got a chance to start when he took over for Lofa Tatupu in 2005 but lost that job to talented youngster Rey Maualuga in 2006...Is similar in some way to Tatupu in that he does not have the physical tools you look for but overcomes it with intangibles...Could be a backup in the pros if he can manage to stay healthy.

37 247 New England (Compensatory Selection) Elgin, Mike G 6-3 282 Iowa

Despite being undersized and possessing just marginal athleticism, Elgin's combination of intelligence, versatility and desire will get him long looks in camp.

Biography:

Former defensive lineman who started the past three years at both center and guard.

Pos:

Tough, heads-up football player who makes the most of his assets. Quick off the snap, drives his feet on contact and gets movement from run blocks. Plays with a nasty attitude and is always looking for someone to hit. Keeps his head on a swivel and helps out teammates. Strong at the point and very good with his hands.

Neg:

Does not play with much balance and falls off blocks. Lacks footwork in space and blocking skill in motion.

Final Draft:

1 24 Meriweather, Brandon FS 5-11 192 Miami (Fla.)

4 127 Brown, Kareem DT 6-4 290 Miami (Fla.)

5 171 Oldenburg, Clint OT 6-5 296 Colorado State

6 180 Rogers, Justin OLB 6-3 252 Southern Methodist

6 202 Richardson, Mike CB 5-11 189 Notre Dame

6 208 Hairston, Justise RB 6-2 220 Central Connecticut

6 209 Hilliard, Corey OT 6-5 318 Oklahoma State

7 211 Lua, Oscar ILB 6-0 238 Southern California

7 247 Elgin, Mike G 6-3 282 Iowa

Plus WR Randy Moss (4th round pick), WR Wes Welker (2nd round Pick), Oakland's 2008 3rd round pick, and finally SF 49ers 2008 1st round pick.

Nice drafting Pats!

Moss contract

Randy Moss wasn't kidding about being willing to play for less money. The contract he agreed to with the Patriots reduced his pay for 2007 to $3 million. He was scheduled to earn $9.75 million. Moss can also earn more in incentives.

Concerning the Moss trade; aside from bumping up Brady I think Maroney could be better than I had originally mocked. I'd like to see more from the OL but just to have the deep threat should keep that 8th guy out of the box on most downs. Also considering Maroney did not have a huge year in '06 coupled with the shoulder thing I do believe he could be a very nice value play at RB. Cheers!

I'm not sure the Pats are done yet. They seem to still be looking at signing another RB.

Patriots | Nordin agrees to deal

Mon, 30 Apr 2007 12:23:40 -0700

Mike Reiss, of the Boston Globe, reports the New England Patriots have agreed to a deal with undrafted free-agent TE Jake Nordin (Northern Illinois), according to the Daily Chronicle.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tight End | Senior | Northern Illinois Jake Nordin

Height: 6-33/8 | Weight: 250 | 40-Time: 4.93

Strengths:

Good size and bulk...Is very strong and loves to lift...Versatile and was used in a variety of ways in college...A decent athlete...Has nimble feet...Adequate blocker who's good in space and has the potential to be better...Is pretty tough...Smart.

Weaknesses:

Timed speed and quickness are well below average...Has short arms...Lets too many balls get into his body...Is not explosive and lacks a burst...Won't do much after the catch...Will not stretch the field..Wasn't real productive...Limited upside.

Notes:

Last name is pronounced "Nor-DEEN"...Began his college career as a fullback...Did not get many opportunities to catch the ball with the Huskies...A developmental guy who might eventually be a solid backup / blocking specialist...Fringe prospect.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

West in focus

University of Texas El Paso defensive lineman Zach West expects to sign a rookie free agent deal with the Patriots, according to the El Paso Times.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gutierrez in focus

The Patriots have reached a contract agreement with quarterback Matt Gutierrez, according to the Ann Arbor News.

Gutierrez played at Michigan before suffering a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder, and gave way to Chad Henne in 2004. He transfered to Idaho State.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Patriots | Team signs L. Anam

Karen Guregian, of the Boston Herald, reports the New England Patriots have signed Boston College undrafted free-agent CB Larry Anam.

Patriots | Brady restructures

Tue, 1 May 2007 12:08:49 -0700

ESPNews reports New England Patriots QB Tom Brady restructured his contract to help facilitate the addition of WR Randy Moss.

Brady deserves a tip of the cap :2cents:

Because the Patriots had to acquire the original terms of Moss's contract as part of the trade with the Raiders, the team needed to clear salary cap space to absorb the $9.75 million figure that Moss was scheduled to earn.

Enter Brady, who agreed to restructure his present contract that runs through 2010 to create the space.

That allowed the Patriots to finalize the trade for Moss, who then tore up his old contract and signed a one-year, $3 million deal that could be worth up to $5 million in incentives.

"Tom does what he can in order to win," said Don Yee, his agent.

I love what the Patriots have been doing this offseason, and with the draft. I am also glad to see that they are not done, and are continuing to look for players they thing will strengthen the team.

The boston globe reported that the Pats brought in Bears veteran defensive lineman Ian Scott. Haven't heard much else yet...The Vikings, Broncos and Falcons are also showing interest.

On a side note, I saw that the Browns released OG Joe Andruzzi.

Cleveland has added a lot to the OL this offseason but I am surprised they cut Andruzzi. The Pats have such depth on the line that I doubt they would give one of the young Lineman's spots to Andruzzi. He was VERY VERY solid as a Patriot though. Loved Andruzzi.

Brady still has a a big pay day coming very soon.

There was some confusion as to Belichick's contract status earlier in the thread because his contract was set to run out at the end of the 2006 season. I just checked with Mike Reiss of the Boston Globe and he informed me that last time he asked the Pats about Belichick's contract status he was told that Belichick was signed "beyond 2007" but that's all they would tell him as it is their policy not to discuss contracts. So he has to be signed at least through 2008.

Was reading in another thread that it looks like Seau will be a Patriot again this season.

Patriots | Seau will reportedly re-sign with team

Sun, 13 May 2007 10:33:43 -0700
