Shawn Springs set to sign with Patriots

Providence Journal

Free agent Shawn Springs is expected to sign with the Patriots, according to the Providence Journal.

Springs can play both corner and safety, which fits the Patriots' profile. The 34-year-old probably preferred a chance to win over a big payday and New England was his best option. He's almost certainly going to be a starter.

if he can stay healthy then he's a great signing for them.
Completely agree. He is the perfect person to mentor Wheatley and Wilhite. Let Hobbs and Springs start and hopefully one of the young guys takes the starting job by midseason. I doubt they resign Hobbs after 09 so the W's better get some experience.

Wheatley was showing promise against Marvin until he got hurt. At 34 how many games can the team count on Springs as a starter? Ideally it would be nice to see Wheatley starting with Hobbs, Wilhite and Springs sharing the right side/slot duties.

Pats bring in Springs

New York, NY (Sports Network) - The New England Patriots appeared to have won the services of free agent cornerback Shawn Springs.

NFL.com reports that the Patriots reached an agreement with the veteran defender on Thursday.

Springs spent the past five seasons with Washington after playing his first seven years with Seattle. The Ohio State product grew up in nearby Silver Spring, Maryland.

Last season, Springs missed seven games with a calf injury and finished the campaign with 36 tackles and one interception. In his five seasons with the Redskins, he picked off 12 passes, notched seven sacks and recorded 250 tackles.

Meh, nothing to get excited about IMO. Springs will likely ge hurt before training camp starts and he's really a shell of what he used to be at this point. Maybe a nice depth move, but I think NE is better off letting the young guys play. I'll bet Springs get action at S in NE. He could become very useful there IMO.
