New giant 3D printer can build a house in 24 hours (1 Viewer)

Rove!

Between this and self driving cars a lot of peoples jobs are going to be replaced by the machines.

According to the video this replaces the framing step but you still need excavators, finish carpenters, plumbing, electric, hvac etc.

Well, there goes the neighborhood.
this post is one I borderline like. IF there were no limits on likes I would like it, but it is not quite good enough for me to waste a precious like on.

so consider this a "moral victory" as I truly do like your post, just not quite enough for a like.

Very cool. Also should reduce the cost of housing. Interesting thoughts on using it to build bases on the Moon or Mars.

It's been a trend over the past few decades. US manufacturing output is doing great; it's just not producing jobs due to automation.

For how long? In a new house with full digital plans I bet you could automate a lot more than just the walls.

I'm assuming you're not just now coming to this realization. ;)
I just posted this for discussion as it often gets overlooked with new technological advances. These two I have had my eye on for a while, and I actually do some 3d work for a guy with 6 makerbot printers.

Both 3d printing & driverless cars could shuffle the workforce to the likes of what ATM machines did to the banking industry.

I'm all for it. Hopefully prices on goods drops.

Hasn't there been a few concrete shortages in the past decade?
Concrete shortages are usually driven by the guys who bring the sand not being able to keep up with concrete production. Like in Dallas where the building market is hot. You really don't have basic supply based shortages.

Can it be fixed? It would seem the rate of production would increase the demand 10 fold.

Sure if it became a constant they would hire more guys for concrete production. It's really a matter of more trucks hauling sand or concrete trucks making deliveries. The plants can run 24/7 and they would build more if demand is there. And since driverless vehicles are going to become a thing the trucks could also run 24/7 only stopping to fuel up at some point in the future.

If I told you it was intended as both a pun and a satirical statement on society's fear of technology would that push it over the edge?

And of course this is the very kind of thing we have been discussing in the BIG thread. Automation is coming to every facet of production in this country even in the service industry. Lots of people are going to be displaced as even building and maintaining these things will be highly automated and require little human input.

So we'll automate the dump trucks and the sand excavation equipment. Then we'll automate the cement trucks.

Someone was talking about SKYNET??? Or is this the looming Cylon rebellion?

I think its all very interesting. The truly curious thing is what happens to those that are displaced. Where do they end up. I can see most manufacturing going to automation especially processes requiring great degrees of precision. Obviously there will be some staff needed to oversee the operation of the machines but that staff level will be minimal.

I'm just wondering if we will see something like Rosie the maid from the Jetsons displacing housekeepers in the lodging industry.

No need to worry. It will all be run by Google :tinfoilhat:

Google claims to have worked out pretty much all the kinks from their driverless car. All this stuff is barreling right down the track aimed dead at us. Not sure if we get a robot rebellion but if we don't do something for the people who will be displaced we will get a human rebellion and it will be bloody.

i think we will see home automation as well. Japanese are hot on it. As to the people that is where the BIG or something like it comes in. There will simply not be enough jobs. If we can get off planet we can create more opportunities in the asteroid belt or on Mars, etc. Something is going to have to change dramatically.
