New Orleans Bachelor Party (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
Hi all -

I'm getting married in September and looking for bachelor party advice/suggestions. Options that have been considered are Vegas, Caribbean, Music Festival, Boulder/Denver, Wine Country. Considerations are good food, good booze, good nightlife scene, activities other than food/booze/nightlife, and affordability. Depending on what's scheduled my dad may join. Other relevant info: I'm 30. Will be a group of 10-15 I'm guessing, including brothers ranging from 23yo to 43yo. Fairly diverse group. One member of group doesn't drink or otherwise. Others are open to most anything. Income range of group runs from non-existent (students) to 100k+. I live in Charlotte, but folks will be coming from across the country. Everyone will be flying in.

The current clubhouse leader is a weekend in New Orleans from May 1st to May 5th. That would include 1-2 days of Jazz Fest. Other activities that hope to include are some sort of fishing, possibly deep sea, gambling, girls, good food (will likely re-visit McClures for one lunch, do dinner at Cochon one, etc), and late night festivities.

I'm looking for any suggestions / advice. Have been to NoLa a few times and have a rough idea, but have never done Jazz Fest and never done anything outside the typical eat/drink/gamble scene. Have no experience with the adult nightlife options in NoLa.

Any and all advice is appreciated!

Welcome direct messages and also happy to r:e:view info on other sites if needed...

thanks in advance...

You can do all that in Nola with no problem at all. It can be as cheap or as expensive as you want it to be.

You probably don't even need to go deep sea fishing as there is plenty of good fishing within 1-2 hour radius of New Orleans.

Book hotels ASAP

Thanks TF. Confirming dates with the core group this week and then will book some of the hotels and restaurants. Good intel on Jazz Fest as well, wasn't aware it didn't run later. Any suggestions for nightlife or adult nightlife activities?

FC - i love vegas. going in March with much of the same group for March Madness and get there at least 1-2x a year. wanted to do something else / mix it up.

Le Pavillion is a good hotel choice close to the Quarter and other points of interest.

Who's paying for the broke dudes when you want to do anything good?

I'm sure NOLA will be a lot of fun...

I only get to Vegas for bachelor parties at this point of my life, so that's always my first choice.

I don't know if they can accomodate you, but dantes kitchen, get the chicken on a brick and thank me later

And of course Mcclures

As mentioned above, book accommodations and make dinner reservations ASAP. You all will have a great time. As ffldrew said, even if you don't make it to the Fairgrounds for the Jazz Fest itself, the city will be awash in great live music shows every night of your trip.

Oh - and check with Neil at McClures - last year he did a couple of catering deals at some side shows - if you were planning to visit with him he may be offsite on some of those days.

If you make it out to the Fairgrounds on Saturday - (Bruce is that day - so it will be nuts) - DO NOT MISS the MIDNITE DISTURBERS - I repeat DO NOT MISS the MIDNITE DISTURBERS

Everything above is spot on. Some Jazz Fest advice. I haven't missed a year since I was ten. I'm 45.

Do-

1- Get there early when the gates open. It's much easier to pass through security.

2- Bring a folding chair if you can. They sell them there but they are expensive. If not, bring something to sit on. If it rains, it's mud city. You can also bring a back pack.

3- Beers are $5.00 a piece. A case is $120.00. Bring a throw away cooler and fill it with ice before you get in. It saves you constant trips to the beer stand and your beer will be cold. You are allowed to bring one water.

4- If you plan on drinking hard liquor, sneak it in using an old plastic flask or one of those new bladder bags. I wear cargo shorts and put it to one of the large pockets. They don't pat you down. Just don't let it be to obvious. Once you are in, they don't care.

5- This is the most important. Find a base camp. If there are ten of you going, you'll need a place to meet up. I suggest the back right from the main stage. All the way in the back near the walking path past the speakers. This is the most conenient and fun. You don't want to be near the stage. Once you get up there, it's hard to get out. The back has direct access to the bathrooms, beer stand, and the race track itself. It's the fastest and easiset way to get around the fairgrounds. You can find a spot there and set up your chairs. Nobody will mess with them. Get to know your neighbors. Everybody is usualy laid back.People bring flags. Use them as your reference point when letting people know where you are. There's a guy in the back that always brings a Guiness flag. Set camp near him. They are a lot of fun. Great group. Now you have the freedom to roam and check out other acts and eat knowing you have a spot for the main acts.

6- Suncseen is a must.

7- It's probably going to be muddy. It rains just about every year at some point. It's April. Bring an old pair of sandals. They will come in handy.

8- Eat the Cuban Sammich, Crawfish Beignets, Crawfish Pie, and Crawfish Enchiladas. You wont be dissapointed. My personal favorites.

Dont- Not have fun.

Strip Clubs- Are all up and down Bourbon. They are all virtually the same. Go to big Daddy's only if you want to see skanks.

Food- Too many to list. It's easiest to go online and see what you like.If money is not an option I suggest Dickie Brennans in the Quarter.

Fishing- Bowfishing in Port Sulphor. It's a night trip. You go out on an air boat that rides seven, Five charters and the captain and deck hand. The boat has a generator and lights attached to the front. You chase redfish through the wetlands until you get your limit. It's one of the funnest things i've ever done in my life.http://www.rodnreel.com/cajunair/

Hotels- Book em now. Jazz Fest weekend. Lots of people in town.

Hookers- Stay away. You never know what you'll catch.

Cops- Do what they say. Don't argue. They will arrest you if you give them a hard time. Whatever you do, don't show your junk out on the street. When your drunk, it sounds like a good idea. Until you get arrested and have to eat the cheese grits at OPP the next morning.

Enjoy our city. . .

#5 is spot on. It's my go to strategy every Jazz Fest...the only thing I would add is to get as close to one of the "orange wooden bridges" as possible...this will give you easy access to the outward track, plus you'll be a tad elevated in height to get a little better look at the stage

Also, on jazz fest days, plan to eat lunch and dinner at the festival, huge variety of great food.

There's a formal cab line leaving jazz fest. Just a warning, that it's a long wait....it's very organized, but it's long...either be prepared for that, or seek alternative ways home (which I'm not aware of, since we live close and park close)

I'm working at a strip club on Bourbon Street these days. I don't plan on being there come May, but if I am I'll gladly point out which girls have the lowest morals in the club.

I set my camp by the second wood bridge over there every year. How long you been going?

There are 2 cab and bus areas - one on Gentilly at the Stallings playground - the cab line winds through the park and takes quit a bit of time. The other side of the street is a line of articulated buses that take you down Canal to Harrahs - it will stop at the main streets - Rampart, Bourbon/Carondolet, etc Cab is 5 a person - the bus is 1.25 and in my experience faster. Kids will be selling beers as you leave - pick up a couple and enjoy the line.

The same situation happens if you take the Mystery Street(behind Acura stage) exit - there is a park(forget the name) that is on Esplanade. Same story there - except there are buses going out to the Cemeteries/City Park - so ask to get on the Canal one(they also have one that goes down Rampart to the west).. Also a good stop is the hood around there - Liuzza's sometimes has a band outside and you can kick back. Also the Bus line moves faster at this location than the Stallings one.

If you will have a large group - my suggestion is to hook up with a private driver before hand. You can get one that has a 10-15 person white van - and have a meeting place afterwards.

I'm 35 and have been going since college most years. Depending on what headliner we want to see is what stage (Acura vs. Gentilly) we set up at.

:goodposting:

Met up with TF one year for Jazzfest and he had a nice base camp set up with a flag on a tallll pole. Made it super easy to find the group after coming back drunk from beer stand, food stand, bathroom, walking around. Fuller was there too. Good times.

The food is insane. Do not miss the Cochon de Lait Poboy from Walkers.

Walk through the arts and crafts areas, even if that's not your thing. Tons of cool stuff.

Jazz fest is awesome.... best large scale music festival I've ever seen. The whole city gets into it.

My recommendation is to PM gianmarco and try to follow all of his suggestions about what to do. Man is a legend in my book.

I'm working at a strip club on Bourbon Street these days. I don't plan on being there come May, but if I am I'll gladly point out which girls have the lowest morals in the club.
So shoulda dropped you a line when we were in town for my buddy's 30th a month ago

You can hit up Walgreens or CVS and find the cheap camp chairs for around $10 or so.

I had just started back up over there around that time. Still coulda hooked it all up though.

This/ You can also get a a cheap pair of flip flops if it rains. They sell those collapsible coolers for $15.00 to $20.00 if you didn't bring one. They also sell asquirtbottlewithafan on it. If it's balls hot out side, put some ice water in it, turn it on, and start squirting. I've had women come up and beg me to squirt them. I've also had hairy men ask also. It's fun to have if it's hot out.

Congrats

Every guy and every group of guys is different, but for me this is the best piece of advice in the thread. Take a night or just a couple hours to hit up Bourbon Street and the bars, but this is where I think you want to be the rest of the time. Not just because it's a hundred times more fun, which it is, but also because this is where you'll find the kind of crazy adventures you and your buddies will be talking about for years. Everyone's got the same dumb stories about the Quarter and the strip clubs, but a night that includes a late night show at Tips or the Maple Leaf can go in a hundred different awesome directions.

I know right. My wife even offered to go into one with me. I wasn't interested, but this could have changed thingsProbably but though

Oh - and check with Neil at McClures - last year he did a couple of catering deals at some side shows - if you were planning to visit with him he may be offsite on some of those days.
Drew - thank you for both of these. I have been to McClures (Saints/Panthers game, what an ### kicking) before and planned to coordinate something with that portly self-important fellow for a lunch or dinner one night. Will reach out to Neil to see his schedule.

I hadn't seen Jazzfest grids before. Thats a great resource. I will definitely try to integrate the Galatic show, catch a crawfish boil, and will also try to see Drive By Truckers. Obviously will be stretched thin to fit everything in to the schedule but will try.

Do you or anyone else have any other recommendations from the currently posted Jazzfest grid? Debauche and Ghost are interesting, although not really my thing, could be a fun show. Don't recognize many of them.

Congrats

During Jazzfest there are so many late night shows - it is almost as awesome as the Fairgrounds itself.

http://www.jazzfestgrids.com/ - keep coming back here as they are always adding shows

The big areas are Frenchmen Street and then over in the Warehouse district for the clusters of late night shows - and then of course Tipitinas(Galactic at 2AM is a great one - come out of Tips as the sun comes up)

There are adult entertainment places on Bourbon of course. Most Jazzfest attendees are not to concerned with Bourbon during their stay as the music is happening elsewhere in the city - I wouldn't be concerned about crowds down there.

Be on the lookout in the grids for a couple of crawfish boils - they had a good one down by Mannings(across from Harrahs) last year with the guys from the Radiators. Except it was freezing cold.
Lots of good info in here. I got married in NO and went to 13 Jazz Fests in a row but havent been to one in a couple years. Great advice above to hit Tipitina's and/or Maple Leaf one night. The original Uptown Tips is one of the alltime great live music clubs in the country. I did a stint behind the bar there and it was . . . unbelievable.

You are going to have a great time. Ive been to lots of bachelor parties in Vegas and NO and I would take NO every time (although Vegas has its, um, charms).

This sounds awesome and completely different. None of us are big hunters. Easy for beginner group to use the bow? I plan to reach out to them for more details, but rough idea of cost, what time it starts, how long it lasts?

Also, any suggestions on what to do with the redfish after? None of us live near there. Other than shipping home on ice, thought maybe we could find someone to work up a dinner with what we caught.

If you plan on drinking hard liquor, sneak it in using an old plastic flask or one of those new bladder bags.

Cops- Do what they say. Don't argue. They will arrest you if you give them a hard time.
What's the attitude at the festival towards "other" alternatives?

Like picking your favorite kid?

Hmmm - well the Anders show with Bill Kreutzman of the Grateful Dead plus Paul Barrere and Fred Tackett from Little Feat will be a big highlight - I have heard bad things about acoustics at Sugar Mill - so I would focus on Galactic at Tips. Not sure I've ever seen a bad time had at a Tab Benoit show. Raw Oyster Cult is Dave Malone from Radiators plus John Gros formerly of Papa Grows Funk plus Bonerama Horns will be a pretty darn good superband(I saw them last year and they rocked) plus Good Enough for the Good Times with Joe Ashlar on the B-3 should be a dynomite night at the Howlin Wolf . Any show with Stanton Moore in the band is always good in my experience - there are more coming I'm sure as I don't see a lot of the Brass bands or Indian shows here yet - look for Stooges Brass Band they are great - Big Sam's Funky Nation shows are party times - they should get listed soon. Corey Henry's Treme Funktet may show up - I saw Corey last month working with Galactic and Maggie Koerner is singing with Galactic.

Original subdudes will be a great show -- I'm seeing them in Denver in their first show ever. They might be a bit older for your crew - but they are a damn fine band. And since Dave Malone is there with Raw Oyster Cult - maybe a Radiators show will happen somewhere(besides the fairgrounds). These two bands were my entry drug to New Orleans.

Just pay attention - don't spark in front of the cops, don't in front of a family - not in the tents. But there are plenty of spaces to do it - usually in the big crowd at Acura you will have no problems. Phish is playing the week before you arrive - I'm sure the cops will be past dealing with it by then.

Soul Rebels at Le Bon Temps on the Thursday night should be awesome. Awesome band in an awesome venue (read complete ####hole dive bar - but quintessential NOLA)...and it should be pretty packed.

It's literally right across the street from Tipsy's place, so can stroll on over there after a meal.

I went last year and there was a group in front of us passing around a blunt...I think you'd have to botch it pretty bad or get really unlucky to have any trouble. Ton of people in a huge space in an open air environment.

Have fun, last year was the only time I have been to NO so I don't have much in the way of advice but I was really impressed. You could go to Jazzfest and not know a single performer and still have a good time, and the city was awesome, really felt like the perfect atmosphere for something like a bachelor party.

After my wedding reception we had the bus drop half of the guests off at Bon Temps instead of taking them back to the hotel in the Quarter--lots of out of guests staggering and crawling in to the hotel lobby around 6 am. They do lots of live music, too, jammed in tight and sweaty.

Bowfishing isn't that hard. You have to get used to aiming about two inches in front of the fish because of refraction. If you're going to do it, I'd suggest a little practice. Stand on a chair and shoot a two liter bottle 5-10 feet in front of you.I don't know what to tell you about what to do with the fish. You can't bring them back to your room. That would be a big pain in the ###. Give them to the captain. He may give you a discount on the price of the trip.

The last time I went it was $100.00 a man with tip. You shove off right at nightfall. The boat ride alone is worth the price. They drive you out into the wetlands, about a thirty minute ride till you get to the wetland areas. And then you start fishing and drinking. The captain is this big ole coonass from the bayou. Everytime someone shoots a fish he shouts out "Good shot hoss!!!". You stay out there until you catch your limit. 5 reds each. Usually about 4 or 5 hours. Great time.

Other "alternatives" at the Fest are cool. Nobody cares as long you aren't wide open about it. I brought my daughter to see Maroon 5 last year. She asks me "Is that smell what I think it is?" Cops aren't looking for it. I've never seen anyone get in any trouble because of it. It's just about everywhere.

Most people cant afford destination bach parties and i imagine your bp will be alot smaller than 10-15
Recently had to pass one up in Vegas b/c of cost. And I make closer to the top range, but also have mortgage, kid, etc.

I would opt for something other than Vegas but that's just me. I think NO would be fun, but Jazz Fest is a total cluster from what I hear, but big festivals bug me so that might not be an issue for you.

Denver/Boulder, especially Boulder, would offer some cool outdoor options that would be more than just parting if you are looking for that.

Are there any good beer bars with a wide selection of craft beer in New Orleans?

Is the Avenue Pub the best place to go for craft beer in NO? Anywhere else I should check out for good beer?

Is Steins Market & Deli the best bottle shop in town?
