New Ref Jerseys? (1 Viewer)

The NFL Network did an entire segment on the new ref gear. I forget what they are made out of but its a much more weather friendly. From what they said the refs uniforms havent been updated in decades.

Yep -- I saw this, too earlier this week. They were designed by Reebok, I believe, and they have both warm and cold weather versions. The NFL was really happy about how the fabric turned out -- it's supposed to breathe well and absorb liquid extremely well.

Not to mention the vertical stripes have a slimming effect.

Moss proof I see.

I think I'm going to like how it dates the game. You'll be able to look at a picture from any game now and know whether it was before or after 2006.

"They should be riding on a horse at Saratoga," one spectator cracked :lmao:

What's funny, is that they (NFL) keep pointing to improved materials and crap as the reasons, and they go on and on with it. What does any of that have to do with changing the striping and such? NOTHING. Like they had to go with another style because of the different materials... :lmao: :loco:

Why do I think of the old Chet Lemon-era Chicago White Sox jerseys when I see those collars?

Though they do have the handy numbers on the sleeve for ease of issue demerits when breaking down the video later.

Apparently new fabric requires the rest of the uniform to be butt-ugly. :X

1- Look at the link provided...........did you see that the ref in the picture in the article has BJ 25 on his back?

............... I'm not sure I'd want that on my back :bag: (sounds like a comment from Joe's weekly "Random Thoughts")

2- Saw the uniforms last night and was wondering: Why do the refs wear stocking socks WITH STRIPES like in baseball?

I mean.......when did that practice start and what's the purpose?........THAT seems outdated (yes, I know they are going to full pants when it gets cold)

The article implies the styling of the pants and (I assume) socks hasn't changed:
Referees will wear the new Reebok-designed shirts and the traditional white knickers for most games and will switch in cold weather to black full-length pants that will allow more room for additional layers.
Short pants and striped socks can be seen in this picture from week 1 last year and this one from week 17 when it was colder

yes, I read the article that you quoted.psssst........just want to let you know that knickers are pants............I was asking a question about SOCKS!

As in.......When did the striped sock style start? (what year? what was the reasoning?, etc.)

No....kidding sherlock. The long socks go along with the knicker style pants. I guess I was assuming too much in expecting people to put those together. I guess they could have gone with bare calves all this time. Also note that the pictures I linked showing "Short pants and striped socks" show they've been wearing striped socks prior to this year. Do I know exactly when it started? no. Is it anything new? no. That's what I was getting at. I'm pretty sure they go along with the "traditional" (i.e., old) knickers.

To find out a bit more on how long this has been going on I was looking back at old superbowl videos, ane there appear to be stripes possibly as far back as superbowl 1, although the images aren't that clear. However, on the video for SB IV at the very beginning when they show Stram pacing the sidelines, you can pause it and see stripes on the socks of the ref in the background to the right. So i'd say they've been wearing them since at least the 1969 season.

I like the new uni's, I agree with Joe that we'll now know if a game is pre-2006 or 2006& beyond.
