New tidbit on Vince Young's Wonderlic (1 Viewer)

Interesting tidbit from Austin sports radio on VY. Chip Brown of the Dallas Morning News and also Austin's ESPN radio morning show (who covers the Longhorns and usually has the most accurate info on Texas and its players of any media guy) was on and said that he was told VY took the first Wonderlic test and did not know it was a 12 minute time limit. So when the 12 minutes was up and they went to get his test he had only done something like 11 or 12 of the questions and was surprised "What? I'm still working on it." That was when they let him take the test again with the understanding it was timed and he scored the 16.

Not sure if it is true, but it makes more sense as far as putting all the pieces together than anything else I've heard. Explains the low score and the reason they let him retake it. Also explains the statements about him not being properly prepared by his agent who surely should have let him know it was timed. Just thought all the conspiracy theorists might enjoy hearing this one. Again, not sure if its true, but Chip Brown usually has the best info on the Texas football team.

he must have missed that part at the beginning of the test where the proctor says - you have 12 minutes - ready, begin. Hope someone clues him into the play clock in the NFL

If this is true it again speaks to how dumb the people managing Vince are. Why not come out and say this publicly? Maybe it is a dumb mistake but it is one that people could understand. A lot of the speculation would have gone away.I'm not sure I buy this.

So he did score a 6.The "I didn't know" routine is more pathetic than the actual score.

I don't know what really happened, but this is a reasonable explination that people could buy and would show that while unprepared, he is at least smarter than a speed bump.I don't know how going public with this could be worse than where he is now. "I didn't know how the test worked, so i took my time. My mistake, no big deal, i retook the test and did better."

:goodposting: this story is 100% :bs:

what a crock..how many tests do you take NOT knowing the time limit?!?!?

hes at the combine. he knows the wunderlic is coming. he knew full well what he was doing.he didn't score well, oh well..life goes on..the more damage control I hear from him the more I believe Young is just plain `stupid`..

Something similar happened to me at a job interview. I was asked to take an aptitude exam and forgot to ask the time limit. Needless to say, I didnt end up working at the Company. :bag:

Point is, its a very believable story if true. Of course, Major Adams and his "posse" should prepared VY for the exam, but thats another story.

Maybe, but your theory doesn't explain any of the weirdness of the situation like what was wrong with the first test, why was it disputed, why did he retake it, etc.

Hawk,

This is an interesting twist and seems somewhat logical. But again, I'm not sure how that obviates people from having major concerns. Every NFL draft prospect that shows up to the Combine knows they're taking the Wonderlic. If he didn't know it was 12 minutes long, that all but certifies neither he nor his representation really took the time to be prepared for the test. How you can't be prepared for a job interview that essentially guarantees you're going to be a multi-millionaire is beyond me.

98% of the people that post here know it's a 12 minute test. The other 2% would score a six in the Wonderlic.

I'm not saying it looks good for him, it's just the first explanation I've heard that makes any sense. And I don't think Vince is as dumb as a box of bricks, so this is a little more comforting to me in that regard. What is shows to me is that he and his dumb agents made the huge mistake of focusing all their efforts on doing a big PR campaign in Houston to try to put fan pressure on Houston to take him, and forgot that he needed to be focused on preparing for the combine and workouts. That's not good judgment, but it would cast less doubt on his future NFL potential than a legitimate 6 on the wonderlic would. But hey, who knows if its true, it just rang more true than anything else I had heard.

Takeaways:

1. Vince Young could have chose better representation. OK, but when other NFL players are getting bilked on investments, failing to file FA papers and the like it's hard to see how this makes him much different. A slight concern, maybe.

2. Vince scored a 16 on a clean test--and that is indicative of his intelligence. That puts him in the Brooks-McNabb range. If there are some out there that want to crucify him over the 6 like he is applying to grad school, whatever.

He probably froze after they first few questions took him a while to answer. Test anxiety is pretty common, and I still maintain that as long as Vince Young can run faster than most guys on the field he will not have a problem.

How much time elapsed between the 1st test and the 2nd test? How much lower than a 16 would his score be if he didn't have time to ponder the questions he had already seen?

Just rhetorical questions.

this story is 100% :bs: what a crock..how many tests do you take NOT knowing the time limit?!?!?
A fair question for the average guy, because we've all got lots of experience with this kind of thing. But Vince was a star athlete at a major public university. The Wonderlic is probably the first test he's ever had to take on his own.

Move on with their lives like you have, as shown by your opening and taking the time to respond to this thread? :potkettle:

On a serious note, what the heck do you care about what people choose to discuss?

I agree with Jason. We're at a point in this story where there's no possible spin that doesn't make VY and his representation look like boobs. When fans know exactly what happens at a combine it's inexcusable for players and their agents to be in the dark. It's not like this was a pop quiz.

What this tells me is that since the test measures the number of questions answered correctly, not the percentage of correct answers. Is that at minute 11, VY filled in the rest of the boxes randomly.

It sounds like his random marks scored better than his real answers. :D

You especially. Your obsession with Vince's test scores is kind of sick.Seriously.

When I took the wonderlic they scored it like this:

1 point for each correct answer

0 points for each question not answered

-1 point for each wrong answer

So if Young answered 12 and scored a six that means he got 9 right and 3 wrong.

As for the question about how well he did on the questions he had already seen - not relevent. There are several versions of the Wonderlic and I highly doubt he was given one with the same questions.

I have seen other posters wonder how stupid he could be because they got 13 or 14 right on the FOXSports version of the Wonderlic (15 questions).

First, FOXSports version is not the same - it is easier. Second, those folks were not timed and their future was not on the line. The pressure increases dramatically when these factors are considered.

On the actual Wonderlic you have 12 minutes to complete 50 questions and are penalized for guessing. That works out to less than 15 seconds per question (14.4 actually). So, if you were to complete the entire test you would have to read, understand and answer each question in about 14 seconds per. That sheds a little different light on things.

Six is ludicrous and his management team SHOULD have prepared him. But one cannot blame Young for having an incompetent team. He can learn from that. BTW, I was told 20-25 is an average score for a college graduate. I scored 38 by missing two questions out of the 42 I answered.

I don't know what you took, but it wasn't the Wonderlic that is given to NFL players because there is NO penalty for guessing. It truly means he got a 6 or 7 on a test that he could have just filled in the blanks randomly and scored better.

Then what about the story that he scored 7 afterall? My company uses a version of Wonderlic that supposedly is harder. Same principle though. When totalling the score it reads e.g. 20/24, 20 of 24 answers correct. If the score is e.g.20/42 then you assume the guy was guessing and that is perceived as negative.

Everyone is tested twice with different tests. If the scores are very far apart, the applicant gets a third different test. No one ever gets the same test twice.

Actually, Dirt scored an 8, so technically dirt is slightly smarter then Vince. Please don't besmirch the fine name Dirt has established by dragging it through the mud (pun intended) so that you may continue your slap-fight with Capella.

Yeah, but dirt didn't know it was being timed, so it's actual score is 18. Get the facts straight there, guy.

I think I'd rather hire Major Adams to represent my interests.
link :lmao: and that's just a small sample. You're obsessed with this guy's test score. Let it go, he did bad, it's not the end-all, be-all.
If you insist on continuing to piss in the sharkpool, you might as well read your own link. The majority of those posts were commenting on the fact that the various stories did not add up, in my opinion. Was ESPN obsessed to the pont of being sick for making a lot of ado over this story? Was Joe obsessed to the point of being sick because he perpetuated discussion with his own thread on the topic? Was Wood obsessed to the point of being sick because he posted several opinions on these threads and even posted an update thread? I just think you are way out of line. Discussion on interesting/evolving stories is not "obsession." And to say any thread discussion is an obsession to the point of being "sick" is just plain anti-social. People are going to have opinions in these threads, and you sir are the one who needs to move on with your life. While you dwell on those threads, they are yesterday's news to me.

I don't believe you're obsessed. This sampling of posts doesn't show single-mindedness. This one, however, does.
