I don't think my pants can take anymore Potbelly or Papaya Dog.
Pret a Manger on 36th and 5th. Dig Inn on 40th and Mad. Chop't on 40th Mad and Park.
Dig Inn is pretty good, I frequent the one on 17th and 5th.
Cool, I'll check it out. Have any suggestions down 5th/Madison towards Madison Sq Park? Sometimes I'll walk there and dream of having an intern to make stand in the Shake Shack line.
Whole bunch of Indian spots in the 20s on Lex... near the armory and Baruch.

Any restaurant recommendations in this general area (near Nassau Av Subway stop)? Also if you had people coming in for their first NYC tour, what one or two things would you say are must sees? Empire State, Rockafeller, Brooklyn Bridge on the agenda but I could use two more suggestions. I'll be with foreigners, so it has to be something they would know. I'm really hoping they don't want to go to Times Square. Maybe drop them off in the Bronx and see if they can find their way back? That seems like a fun game. :oldunsure:

It may have been posted already, but I f

The tenement museum is awesome. Check out the walking tours in advance because that's where it's at. See what you like and plan accordingly. Then go to Katz.

I don't really like it that much- pretty much a big plate o' mush- not much different from piling a bunch of Whole Food's salad bar into a box. But it's healthy, so I included it...
I mean, I'd much rather have pizza, burgers, or just about anything else, but if I'm staying healthy Dig Inn isn't a bad option... That pile of mush at Whole Foods is about $17 while Dig Inn is $9 and change...

I also think Hale and Hearty works for healthy too if you get the right stuff.

Tons of options to eat in that area. The Brooklyn Star is a good place, southern/soul cooking with big portions.
This is an absolutely perfect recommendation. Thanks.

For those that ride the buses, check out NYC Bus Tracker app. Seems to be pretty accurate in telling you where your bus is.

There are a several apps for that and both the ones I have downloaded work equally well. Really invaluable especially if you are headed crosstown.

It's weird that it doesn't seem to be an official MTA app. How could someone on the outside have access to the bus' gps?

The MTA makes the feed available. Crazy they would share, eh?

"In the press release announcing the expansion, the MTA also points out that MTA Bus Time servers "feed raw data to app developers free of charge. Now that data is available for Manhattan bus routes, a number of apps that already provide real-time information about buses can expand their offerings to cover Manhattan as well." These include All Aboard NYC; All Schedules Free; Bus New York City; Google Maps for Mobile; and In Time Staten Island, among many others."

Yeah, that is surprising. You'd think they could have found a way to monetize it to help the MTA budget. Either way, I'm happy. It's really going to come in handy.

Chicago Transit Authority has had bus and train tracker for several years. It's fantastic. Even if you don't have an app each bus stop has a number you can text to get the arrival times.

Tracking by text has been around NYC/MTA for a couple years, but you had to send a text request and then you got a text back. Bit of a pain, the apps are instantaneous.

Thoughts about staying in a hotel at Charlton and Varick? The Four Points Sheraton has a King room for only $178/night. I was looking at a place right at Washington Square Park for about $50-60 more per night (and a Queen instead of King), so this seems like a really good price assuming it still provides good walking access to The Village (that's how I'm supposed to say it, right?).

I don't know that specific hotel but yeah, that would be a fine area to stay. A few minutes walk from Soho, WV or central Village. 1-2 quick stops to TriBeCa or FiDi, and an easy place to hail a cab.

Went to Governors Island yesterday for the 2nd time in a month. Place is great! Unfortunately I will be on vacation August 16-17th, but on these dates there is the Jazz Age Lawn Party. Apparently it is twice a year, this weekend was the first time - We had no idea about this until we got on the ferry and saw all these people dressed up like The Great Gatsby. This looked like so much fun, I will def be doing it next year, but would highly recommend anyone in NY on 8/16-8/17 to check it out. Tons of food, booze, wimmins, and skimpy clothes.

Go with the Washington Square Park location. You never know when you'll need fake mescaline at 2 AM.

In a this is not what we are here for type of post, if any of you NYC/LI fellas have a live-draft redraft league that needs a spot filled, send a PM.

The best thing I learned on this trip is that "every train stops at 42nd Street." That seems like crucial information that I had somehow overlooked in the past.

Greenpoint was awesome, really liked that place a lot. Thanks for the Brooklyn Star recommendation also, that place is really :moneybag:

So tired, NYC wears a guy out.

That's good livin'

I, sadly, can't get the wife anywhere near Brooklyn. She is irrationally anti-Brooklyn. Of the old 80s culture that the only place in the world is downtown Manhattan, regardless of the current cultural (ie: yuppie ####s) of all of Manhattan. I could punt this place in a hot second and move to hipster/doucheyland if the schools didn't suck.

Carbone was good, but way overpriced... I enjoyed my meal, but we dropped enough for like 3 nice dinners elsewhere.

Sitting in Stone Rose Bar in the Time Warner Building now... Good cocktails here, cool scene. Waiting to meet the wife for dinner at Porter House next door. My 2nd or 3rd favorite steakhouse, excited for dinner. I'd highly recommend Porter House, also try getting a window seat

Anyone use any ticket brokers for theater tickets? Going to NYC in August and our 16D wants to see Hedwig only it seems to be sold-out until the end of NPHs run.

We've never been to Fire Island. Is it still good going on a weekday instead of a weekend? Looking to avoid the biggest crowds and have a mellow beach day.

it's awesome on a weekday
I go all the time... Cousin has a house in Fair Harbor...

Assume you are going to Ocean Beach - The Biggest "Town"?

Can't go wrong either way since the Week is mellow - Fair Harbor has 1 pretty well rated restaurant.... Ocean beach has about a dozen.... I'd try McGuires - it's on the water, nice deck for some drinks..

Yeah, I was figuring Ocean Beach. Everything's open as usual on a Monday?

Is it a PITA finding parking in Bay Shore for the ferries?
Heading to FI? I'll ask around... does it have to be Bay Shore?
Seems like the most convenient coming from Queens.

Big lot at the ferries. I've never seen in 100% full, and I've been there at peak weekend times.
That's good, so probably not an issue on a Monday...thx!

On a Monday definitely no issues.

Reason I asked about location is that there are some really good new spots in Patchogue, which went from a dump to a pretty cool little downtown. If you wanted to grab a bite after coming back, or going there late after lunch or something, that might be of interest.

Bay Shore has a few places and Babylon Village which isn't far has a few spots as well.

Yeah, it was all about Fire Island, I've never been there.

A friend of mine runs the audio at the Patchogue Theater. I do some work there on occasion, although not in a while now. I love the beer selection at that BBQ place a couple blocks away.

Next time you are out, hit me up. We should do a LI cornhole while the weathers nice. Great escape from the City during the dog days of August. BBQ on the beach maybe?

Which ones let you BBQ on the beach? Outside of Long Beach, Jones and Wildwood, I'm oblivious to LI beaches. People I know out there mention Gilgo a lot.

Up my way, Sea Cliff beach (if it's after hours otherwise you need to be a resident and member of the beach), and Morgan Park which is basically my front yard has BBQs if not on the beach then in the park overlooking it. Hell, the latter would be easy because it's a big park, and we have access to my place.

Sea Cliff Beach (BBQ's on the sand after formal hours)

Morgan Park and from my Front Door (BBQ's up on bluffs, I think maybe by the beach too).

Would be more than happy to host.

Won't deny I'm jealous. But spring summer and half of fall are just awesome out here. If only Long Island was not full of Long Islanders.

If there's one thing that saves me, it's the ability to be from your scene to mine in just over a half hour to an hour.

plus, I've got jorts in mine.

eta: I wasn't criticizing yours at all, Koya. been getting the itch for no more of this cramped living nonsense. the idea of looking out at a beach seems all kinds of awesome- even if it's LI or NJ.

Didn't take it negative at all. Now, you can stop with the crazy NJ talk. But LI has so many truly beautiful spots. While the south shore bores the shot out of me, not to mention the accents, if you are an ocean guy it's great all the way from long beach to montauk. The North Shore is just brilliant water views from bluffs and beach.

That said, I couldn't live much further out from the City than I already am. Without it no way I'd be here

1st year with a cabana at Malibu - right next to Pt Lookout at the end of the Loop Pkwy

Beach is fantastic - live band every night, kids kept busy with all kinds of activities, charcoal grill always going. You're making a very general statement about the South shore.

Nice!

The owner of a company I work for on occasion has a house in Sea Cliff. (Bay Ave. I think?) His backyard is actually a cliff that goes down to the water. If you ever put something together, def. let me know.
