***New York*** (1 Viewer)

On a Monday definitely no issues.

Reason I asked about location is that there are some really good new spots in Patchogue, which went from a dump to a pretty cool little downtown. If you wanted to grab a bite after coming back, or going there late after lunch or something, that might be of interest.

Bay Shore has a few places and Babylon Village which isn't far has a few spots as well.
Yeah, it was all about Fire Island, I've never been there.A friend of mine runs the audio at the Patchogue Theater. I do some work there on occasion, although not in a while now. I love the beer selection at that BBQ place a couple blocks away.
Next time you are out, hit me up. We should do a LI cornhole while the weathers nice. Great escape from the City during the dog days of August. BBQ on the beach maybe?
Which ones let you BBQ on the beach? Outside of Long Beach, Jones and Wildwood, I'm oblivious to LI beaches. People I know out there mention Gilgo a lot.
Up my way, Sea Cliff beach (if it's after hours otherwise you need to be a resident and member of the beach), and Morgan Park which is basically my front yard has BBQs if not on the beach then in the park overlooking it. Hell, the latter would be easy because it's a big park, and we have access to my place.

Sea Cliff Beach (BBQ's on the sand after formal hours)

Morgan Park and from my Front Door (BBQ's up on bluffs, I think maybe by the beach too).

Would be more than happy to host.
the view out my front door.
Just wondering, is that someone famous in the pic? I want to say looks a little like Judd Hirsch.

eta: I wasn't criticizing yours at all, Koya. been getting the itch for no more of this cramped living nonsense. the idea of looking out at a beach seems all kinds of awesome- even if it's LI or NJ.
Didn't take it negative at all. Now, you can stop with the crazy NJ talk. But LI has so many truly beautiful spots. While the south shore bores the shot out of me, not to mention the accents, if you are an ocean guy it's great all the way from long beach to montauk. The North Shore is just brilliant water views from bluffs and beach. That said, I couldn't live much further out from the City than I already am. Without it no way I'd be here

Just some dry north shore humor folks.

Easy Frances. Long Beach could be SO cool but they get in their ow way. I've somehow never been to PL. need to. You down that way now?

Thinking about the suburbs move as well and looking at the north shore a little. I work very long hours and work downtown so Brooklyn has been great for me the last decade but cost of housing is just beyond my range at this point. Would love some advice on some areas to look at.

What would your preferences be? (need good schools, more land or not so important, more traditional newer suburban or more older houses, want to be near a beach, downtown area that type of stuff)

Weren't me, you and TU supposed to go to a Rags/Isles game at the garden? This winter? Is he still alive?
#### the Brooklyn Isles. And FCUK the Rags.

We were / are supposed to go to games in MD and DC.

I'm taking a week off in August. Let's do a home and home. Nats, Bmore, Mets, Yanks if the schedules work. Even one of each location.

A home and home.

Currently In Europe on a family vacation until early August.

More than welcome to check out the beach scene any time in August when I return. Agree about Long Beach.

Need good schools and like a decent downtown feel. Do need a good commute as my hours are long so don't want to have a bad commute on top of that. Don't care about lots of land or being near the beach. Prefer older homes but probably not a top priority. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks

We've been in Stony Brook (Setauket actually) for the last few months. It's probably farther east than you're looking, but there are good schools (Stony Brook, Setauket, Port Jefferson and Three Village are all good districts), taxes are ok and the feeling of being in woodland areas to more wide open properties are available for housing.

Having said that, we're looking at Smithtown, which is closer to the city but still pretty far out. We'd like to stay this far east and north, but career wise I'll need to be in Manhattan eventually (currently working from home) and wife works in Melville. I can stretch this gig out for a while, but it's not long term.

If you are in close proximity to the Ronkonkoma train station, they have some expresses that are in the city in under an hour

Some initial thoughts - should be a lot of opportunities. The Town of Huntington (mind you, towns on Long Island are like small counties, with Hamlets and Villages within them) could have a number of options. Best downtown on Long Island, though the train is about a mile north (my company is actually building a new downtown at that location). However, there are a number of hamlets within that would be a quick drive to less than an hour's train ride.

The best train line, by far, is the northernmost Port Washington Line. Beautiful communities, generally very good schools, but also quite pricey (Port Washington itself, Manhasset, Great Neck area's, each with a decent downtown). If you can get a commuter parking pass, it's 30 min or even less on express trains at rush hour. If you can somehow get parking (paid monthly) without being a resident (good luck but possible), then you can look at areas within a 10-15 min drive which brings you a little south and further east.

The area I live in / grew up in has some beautiful little towns. Sea Cliff has a great main street and is a wonderful victorian village that overlooks the Sound. Smaller plots of land, older houses, good schools... but pricey as well, and the commute ends up being about an hour or just under. On that same train line a couple stops closer (still 45 min) is Glen Head, same schools as Sea Cliff, but you might find something a bit more reasonably priced for what you get.

Syosset I think has a decent commute, pricey again, very good schools. Same with Cold Spring Harbor. Basically, a lot of options but as you get nearer to the coast it's obviously more expensive generally speaking. But by going just a little more central but still north shore, you can perhaps find a better mix. Maybe Westbury (not sure of the schools) which has an ok little downtown. Jericho is pricey probably, great schools or other Towns just north of Hicksville, which has a lot of connections to the city from 45-60 min.

Hope that helps. If you have a budget that you don't mind sharing could narrow it down, but don't want to pry there.

My wife works in the city so we wanted walking distance to Train / short commute

We're in Merrick (south Shore).... 8 mile Ride to Beaches / Jones Beach Theater... 45 min train into NYC.

Great Schools....

RVC is probably a step up in price/taxes/downtown feel for the south shore and closer to NYC - also lots of older / Tudor style homes.

I grew up in Commack and hung out in Huntington a lot - What I hate about Huntington and a lot of being on North shore is the traffic and killer drive just to get back to the Expressway....

Nice call. Smithtown is 5 miles or so from Central Islip on the Ronkonkoma line. M-F they offer 3 options to get to Penn Station between 8:20 and 8:30am with boarding times of 6:50-7:10am. Not bad.

Port Washington and Oyster Bay lines sure look appealing from a commute standpoint. For what you can get on the house size, backyard, and factoring in property taxes, it can get pricey fast in those towns.

If you go south shore definitely a lot of options open up within more reasonable budgets and there are some great commutes. Babylon has a nice express line and as noted rvc has a pretty vibrant downtown but I thought the question was more north shore oriented.

My wife is the beach nut - she waited for 15 years on that Malibu cabana waiting list - so we have it for the next 3 years. I'm not much of a beach person - just chill in the shade with some cold ones.

Next time your at Malibu stop on by Reaper - E39.

Long time no speak - hope all is well.

Was actually talking to Norm about why one would pay so much for a Cabana....lol

I guess if you're home a lot.....

Remember back in the day hanging at Malibu Club... Good times!

This is the Islanders year - lets hit some games (By year I mean last year on the island ever :( )

How the #### do a group of youngsters swipe flags off of the Brooklyn Bridge? How is that possible?
I love the Post cover yesterday with "Hipsters Surrender".

I know times are different, but my gbs in HS used to climb up the Golden Gate Bridge towers on occasion. BB seems easy by comparison.

I don't necessarily agree with it, but I read there are over 30 detectives working this case. They will have the book thrown at them and be made as examples.

Was there ever a plea reached in case of the base jumpers off of the Freedom Tower? If they stuck to a felony on them, it's going to be the same here. Sadly, I think most of it stems from the fact that cops don't like to play the fool.

I haven't read any updates on that one, but I think the city is treating this like a bigger deal. http://nypost.com/2014/07/23/embarrassed-nypd-launches-huge-probe-into-bridge-breach/

Almost 3 dozen detectives... While it was a stupid stunt, I think they are going to be overly punished on this one.

As expected, a great couple days in NYC.

It's just so awesome to be able to walk around such a big city at midnight and not be bored and feel completely safe.

While I certainly can complain from time to time about my wife's spending habits, it's great to be married to someone who is willing to do a NYC trip without spending tons of dough. The only things we purchased were transportation, lodging, and dining. Since we both just love walking around cities and checking out various hoods, we can have a great time without spending a bunch of extra money.

Pretty much all of our friends, when they heard we were making a trip to NYC, would ask, "Gonna catch a show?" Uh, no. I have absolutely no interest in catching a show, especially on my dime. I suppose if I got free tix, I might go. But, I'd much rather just wander the streets, hang out in parks (Brooklyn Bridge Park is going to be great; thanks for the rec, fantasycurse), eat in good restaurants, and look around.

What would your preferences be? (need good schools, more land or not so important, more traditional newer suburban or more older houses, want to be near a beach, downtown area that type of stuff)
Need good schools and like a decent downtown feel. Do need a good commute as my hours are long so don't want to have a bad commute on top of that. Don't care about lots of land or being near the beach. Prefer older homes but probably not a top priority. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks

Thanks, probably going to start our search in Port Washington area. A bit pricey but commute looks good, which is probably the most important thing for me.

Also, my wife has some family in Bayville, which is close to Sea Cliff, but think an hour commute into the NYC is too much especially when I will need to take a train all the way to Wall Street after getting off at Penn.

We are going to NYC for 3 days in October. Staying on Park Avenue near MoMA. Need one amazing steakhouse and one amazing Italian joint please.

I have gone to google and yelp but they all sound amazing so maybe somebody could help drill it down.

Can't go wrong with Smith & Wollensky and it's within walking distance.

My favorite Steakhouse is Strip House on 12th St. (I've never been to the one midtown, but I assume it is the same), Zagat ranks it in the top 10, Yelp has it at 1. If you want to do Luger's which is always a tourist favorite, make reservations like now, you need to be well in advance there. I'd also recommend Quality Meats or Porter House... Ask for a window seat at Porter House, it overlooks Columbus Circle if you could get it.

Italian, if budget is no concern, check out Carbone or Del Posto, both absolutely delicious, but extremely expensive.

Should I be looking at midtown or 12th street?

Del Posto is fantastic.

But for Italian, there are soooooooo many good, much cheaper fun places here. Depends what kind of experience you want.

eta: I'm still a big fan of da Umberto for a more upscale Italian meal.

While S&W is good, I wouldn't qualify it as "amazing" like the OP is asking for.

In addition to the one's FC42 mentions, my personal favorite is Wolfgang's which gives you the Luger's experience (original is on 33rd and Park but there is another, more open-space one on 54th and 3rd which is even more walkable from there). Del Frisco's is walkable as well. I'd put all those over S&W.

Midtown would be closer to your hotel... I have never eaten at that one, but the one on 12th street is fantastic and I assume they are basically the same.

Everything at Strip House is great... Save room for the 24 layer chocolate cake at the end.

and it's easy to get around the city- especially from where your hotel is. don't feel handcuffed to that neighborhood.

It's slightly relative as well. I work a block away from Wolfgang's on Park, so it doesn't feel as "special" to me. Where as I have to make a special trip to S&W. There's a ton of good spots. I may want a steak sandwich for lunch today. And Wolfgang's takes cards (Luger's doesn't, so be forewarned if you end up there.)

Smith and Wollensky has always been my favorite but it seems to be slipping in quality of their cuts the last couple of times I was there.

If you want a more locals steakhouse experience, check out Keens

Another one that doesn't get mentioned is Uncle Jack's on 9th Ave.

Agree on Keens, strongly disagree on Uncle Jack's. Extremely disappointed in a meal I had there.

We went to the one in Bayside a couple of times and on 9th a few times and had a great meal every time. Might have been an off day when you went.

Mutton chop at Keens :tebow:
